I'm going to propose. I knew Thomas loved me. I could feel it in the way he looked at me, the way he held me like I was his whole world. And I loved him just as much. We were ready- I was ready. So why drag it out? Heart pounding, I took one last sip of the drink I had been nursing for an hour, hoping it would give me a little more courage. I walked up to him and, without giving myself time to overthink, I blurted it out. "I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?" Silence. An impossibly long, heavy silence. And then, the reply, "Well, that's… unexpected." That voice- it wasn't Thomas' voice. It was deeper, smoother, a voice that sent a chill down my spine. Standing there, eyebrows raised, was the CEO. The CEO. Looking every bit as shocked as I felt. Oh. My. God. I had just proposed… to my boss. "Oh my God, I am so sorry," I stammered, my face probably turning ten shades of red. "I thought you were- this is so embarrassing, I-" But he didn't look horrified. He was… smiling? And then, as if the universe hadn't humiliated me enough, he said, "Yes." *** Her plan was flawless: surprise her secret boyfriend with a heartfelt proposal on Valentine's Day. Simple, romantic, perfect- until one drunken mistake turned everything upside down. Now, she's somehow stuck in a fake engagement with her boss. As if that wasn't messy enough, she discovers her boyfriend has been sneaking around with someone else. Her one reason to escape this charade is gone. But the longer she plays the role of his fiancee, the harder it gets to remember it's all pretend...

I turned in time to see my parents being dragged away, their muffled cries ripping into me like cold blades. My mother turned back to me; her eyes implored mine, with her tears glinting in the sun. "You'll regret this," I said, my voice low, my body shaking with rage. The Alpha turned back to me, the hint of an amused smile playing on his lips. "Is that so?" "I'll come back," I said, my voice growing braver. "I'll come back and I'll destroy everything you've ever built. I'll make you pay for what you've done to my family." And then silence fell over the courtyard. For one very still moment, the Alpha's smirk faltered. Then he laughed. "You?" he spat, the word dribbling with malice from his lips. "You are nothing, Alina. You will die out there, all alone, and nobody will ever remember." I heard the crowd laughing along with him-cruel voices that seemed to close in around me on all sides. And I didn't care. I looked back at the Alpha, my eyes ablaze with unshed tears. "I'll make you pay for this," I whispered, more for my ears than for his. ****** Rejected by her mate. Betrayed by her pack. Left to die in the wild. Alina swore she'd return stronger and destroy the ones who shattered her life. Love once burned her, and she would not let that happen again. But Kennedy isn't one to back away from a fight, and as he chips away at the walls around her, Alina starts to wonder if her shattered heart could ever be whole again. Wracked by vengeance in her soul and bound with a mate she is terrified to trust, Alina is torn between the past that haunts her and the future that might just save her. Some bonds destroy. Others are strong enough to heal.

I slid under his arms, looking for a safe place to breathe. I noticed a playful smile on his lips, but chose to ignore it. “Will the change hurt?” I lowered my gaze and asked in a low whisper. “More than you can imagine, human…” The candor in his words made me raise my chin toward him. “How is the transformation?” He approached me again, speaking slowly. “First, your bones begin to break, throwing you to the ground.” His eyes were closed. “Then dense fur will grow all over your body. The elongation of the limbs, I find the most exciting part of the pain.” He teased with a flick of his tongue before continuing. “Then comes the shortening of the snout and the development of sharp claws and fangs.” I took a deep breath, trying to process what was coming. “Is there anything else I need to know?” I asked, my voice shaking. “Loss of control is imminent.” His eyes sparkled, as if he had traversed some hidden memory in his mind. “The thirst for blood is insatiable, the beast will dominate you, acting primarily on primal instincts. This will result in violent attacks on anyone or any animal in your path!” “Will I become irrational?” I covered my mouth, trying to control the knot that had formed in my throat. “How do you control it?” Laughing, he had already reached me and pulled me close, digging his claws not too deep into my hip, causing a groan of pain. “It takes strength, training, and having the goddess on your side, human…” He retracted the claws, leaving only one long one, and returned to my chin, scratching it and collecting a drop of blood. He licked it and smiled. “Don't worry, I'll be here for your whole trial…” “To make sure I die?” With tears in my eyes, I took a few more steps forward into his dangerous game, noticing that his breathing was a little heavier. “You remind me so much of her.” He murmured, pressing his forehead against mine. “To make sure your transformation doesn't get out of control and to witness the deity's choice.” With more pressure on my forehead, he forced me to take a few steps back in pain. “I'm scared…” I confessed, squeezing my hands together. The wolf remained mysteriously seated, not saying a word. Joint pains began, a twist in my stomach, and my ribs seemed to expand inside, as if to make room for a dog's soul. “Ouch, that hurts…” I groaned, squatting down and wrapping my arms around my stomach. “I don't want this…” I pleaded with teary eyes, looking at the Alpha in front of me. “Please, help me avoid this!”

My name is Katia; I want to find my fated mate and live a peaceful life raising our pups. The problem is I have holes in my memories and don’t understand who or what I am. I know I am a werewolf, but I am also something else. Rejection is the last straw! I am not worthy is the reason he gives. The pain doubles me over; my wolf is whimpering in my head, and tears are running down my face. I whispered my acceptance of his rejection and took off running. I ran through the pack house out across the green manicured lawn into the forest. "I'm sorry, my sweet girl," I say to my wolf. I'm sorry you have been stuck with me, and our life has been difficult. She whispers," It's not your fault, Katia." I don't know how long or far we ran, but we came to a cliff with a waterfall. The pain from the rejection is unbearable, and the hurt keeps pounding at me. I know I am missing something. Aza, my wolf, feels it, too; she says we are more than regular werewolves and are here for a reason. We cannot remember the reason. I stand staring at the water running over and down, creating the fall. I wonder what the reason is for the millionth time. Why can I or Aza not remember? Does it have something to do with the way others treat us? The way we have been sent to live with different people since the death of our parents? Does it have something to do with why my fated rejected me? I am tired of figuring out why our memories do not make sense. My sweet girl and I want peace, but we do not know how to obtain it. I stand staring into the oblivion of the pool at the bottom of the waterfall. So I stand there rejected, half a wolf, speaking with my Wolfie, my nickname for Aza, debating what we should do next. Someone was yelling my name from the direction I ran. I do not want to go back there. I hear laughter. Turning, I glance down over the cliff. There is another pack having a barbecue. The adults are laughing and watching the pups play. What looks to be the Alpha, beta, and gamma of the pack are in the water playing Marco Polo with some of the children. They look so happy and carefree. I want that. I wonder if Aza and I ever have a life like that.
