Chapter 1

THIRD PERSON NARRATION

Rose is a girl not like many others. She is, instead, a shy girl, and everyone knows very well that she is a nerd. She has been the best in her class for as long as she can remember—so long that she doesn’t even know when it began. Excellence has always followed her like a shadow, silent but constant, defining her in ways she never asked for.

She lives with her parents, who treat her like a baby, and she truly hates it. It isn’t that they are cruel or unloving—quite the opposite. They love her so much that they wrap her in layers of care and rules, never realizing how much she struggles to breathe beneath them. Rose wants to be like her colleagues at school, the ones who go partying whenever they want, who sneak out late at night, who laugh loudly about their weekends, and who have boyfriends to text endlessly. Her life has none of that. Not even a small piece.

She is always either at home or at school. The routine disgusts her. The same walls, the same books, the same expectations, day after day. She wants an interesting life like others seem to have so effortlessly. Many of her friends are enjoying things like partying as well as having s*x whenever they wish, living freely, boldly, without fear. Rose watches from a distance, pretending not to care, but deep inside she aches. She misses all these things, even though she has never truly experienced them. The absence itself hurts.

“Rose…”

She is pulled from her thoughts by the familiar voice of her mother calling her from downstairs. Rose sighs softly, irritation tightening in her chest. What could her mother be wanting this evening? This time is always hers—her quiet time alone in her bedroom, the only space where she can think freely without being watched. Her bored life feels even heavier tonight.

Dragging her feet, she slowly slopes down the stairs to meet her beautiful mother in the living room. Her mother looks at her with a gentle smile, the kind that always makes Rose feel both loved and trapped.

“You have someone on the phone,” her mother says, handing her the receiver.

Rose takes it eagerly, surprised. Who would be calling the house phone? Anyone who knows her usually calls her cellphone. A strange curiosity fills her as she lifts the receiver.

“Hello?” she says cautiously.

“Hello, Miss Linn Rose,” a formal voice responds. “You have been offered a place in our university in reference to your application three weeks ago.”

For a moment, Rose cannot breathe. The words echo in her mind, repeating themselves like a beautiful song. She feels as though music is playing in her ears. This can’t be real. Her heart begins to race, excitement flooding her veins so suddenly that her hands tremble.

She had applied some time back for a place at university, almost secretly. For the first time in her entire life, she had been able to do something completely on her own, without being forced or guided by her parents. That alone had felt like rebellion, like freedom in its smallest form.

Not that her parents mistreat her—no, not at all. But the truth is, they decide everything that happens in her life, from what she wears to where she goes, and for sure, this annoys her so, so much. Her mother always claims that they are doing what is best for her, that they know better because they are older and wiser. But Rose doesn’t think so. She believes that sometimes love can be suffocating, even when it is well meant.

Imagine—at her age, she has not been able to get a boyfriend at all, despite having so many crushes on many of her classmates. She has watched boys she liked date other girls, girls who seemed freer, braver, more alive. She has smiled politely and pretended not to care while her heart quietly broke over and over again.

Now, as she listens to the voice on the phone, Rose realizes something powerful. This—this is the perfect time. She has been admitted to a university so many miles away from her family, far enough to feel like another world. For the first time in her life, she has a real chance to choose herself.

The caller continues explaining details about the admission, but Rose barely hears anything beyond the words “you have been offered a place.” Her mind is already racing ahead, imagining dorm rooms, new friends, late-night conversations, parties, mistakes, lessons, love—life.

For the first time in her life, her parents have told her that she will go to a university of her own liking. This is really her chance now, her moment to do whatever she thinks is good for her, to make choices that belong to her and no one else.

At her age, her bucket list has not even moved a single step at all. Everything she has ever wanted to try has remained untouched, waiting patiently for her courage to catch up. But with this admission, she believes she is finally going to be able to fulfill all the wishes written in her heart, even the ones she has never dared to say out loud.

“Thank you so much, God,” she whispers after hanging up the call, her voice shaking with emotion.

She stands there for a second, staring at the wall, letting the reality sink in. Then a smile spreads across her face, wide and uncontrollable.

“This is the best day of my life,” she says aloud as she slopes down to meet her parents downstairs again, her steps lighter than before. This is news worthy of celebration, news that could change everything.

In fact, she will be leaving in only two days.

As the thought settles in, excitement mixes with fear. Two days. Such a short time, yet enough to turn her entire world upside down. She hopes—no, she prays—that her parents don’t stop her plans at all, that they don’t suddenly change their minds or tighten their grip on her freedom.

Because for once, Rose doesn’t want to be just the good girl, the nerd, the obedient daughter.

She wants to live.

Shopping for school.

Rose POV

I couldn’t contain my happiness at all. It felt like my heart was going to burst right out of my chest. I was finally going to campus. But that wasn’t even the biggest part of my excitement. The real excitement was the fact that I was finally going to live my own life—the life I had dreamed of for as long as I could remember. A life where I could make my own choices, learn from my own mistakes, and finally feel free.

For years, I had watched life happen to other people while mine stayed frozen in the same place. School, home, books, silence. That was my world. Now, everything was about to change, and the thought alone made my hands tremble.

I had insisted that I could do my own shopping. After all, I was old enough to know what I needed. But of course, my mom could not take any of that at all. She had immediately shut down the idea, listing all the reasons why I still needed her help, supervision, and guidance. Since it was all going to end today—or at lea
