Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Intertwining of Fate

Nightfall descended, casting the city into a silent tension. The lights from towering skyscrapers illuminated half the sky, with neon flickers reflecting the city's blend of opulence and indifference. Ryder stood silently atop one of these tall buildings, gazing down at the sea of lights below. His face, shrouded in the faint glow, bore a sternness that exuded an unspoken menace.

He was an assassin, a legendary figure who had never known failure. Today's mission, however, was exceptionally challenging—his target was the most powerful mafia boss in the city, Damien.

"This will be quite the challenge," Ryder murmured, a nearly imperceptible cold smile curling at his lips. He had long become accustomed to walking the razor's edge between life and death, his heartbeat now dulled by repetition.

A gentle vibration from his phone interrupted his thoughts. Ryder swiped the screen open, and a deep voice came through the other end, "The mission is set. You know what to do."

"Understood." Ryder replied coolly, a glint of cold determination flashing in his eyes. "He’s already my prey."

The voice on the other end remained indifferent to Ryder's calm demeanor, only adding, "The target is extremely dangerous. You can't afford any mistakes."

"Don't worry, I'll complete it perfectly." Ryder hung up the phone, his fingers sliding over the screen as he reviewed the target's information once more. Damien, the ruler of the city's underworld, was a man of ruthless methods and deep cunning—an opponent of the highest difficulty.

In the photograph, Damien's eyes were particularly striking—deep and untamed, as if the entire world lay within his grasp. Ryder stared into those eyes, feeling as though Damien was looking right back at him, a strange sensation spreading in his chest.

"A truly dangerous man," Ryder whispered to himself, though his eyes gleamed with a hint of excitement. This was a battle between hunter and prey, and he was destined not to fail.

A week later, Ryder meticulously orchestrated a chance encounter. He knew Damien’s habits and was aware that every Friday, the mafia boss frequented a high-end bar—a haven of debauchery and excess for the elite.

As night fell, Ryder stood at the entrance of the bar, his tall, lean frame sharply defined by a simple yet tasteful black suit. He pushed open the door, his gaze sweeping swiftly across the room, locking onto a figure surrounded by admirers in the corner—Damien.

Damien lounged on a plush sofa, a glass of red wine in hand, leisurely savoring it as if everything around him was beneath his notice. His eyes drifted casually over the crowd until they settled on Ryder.

For a brief moment, Ryder's heartbeat quickened, but he quickly regained his composure. He moved nonchalantly towards the bar, ordering a drink while awaiting Damien's next move.

Sure enough, Damien’s gaze never wavered from Ryder. He murmured something to those around him before rising and approaching Ryder.

Feigning casualness, Ryder lifted his head just as Damien’s eyes met his. Damien offered a knowing smile, leaning against the bar, his deep voice laced with amusement, "Alone?"

Ryder smiled slightly, raising his glass to clink it against Damien's, "Alone."

"You don't seem like a local," Damien remarked, his tone probing yet oddly relaxed.

"Perhaps you're right," Ryder responded with deliberate mystery, unwilling to reveal much.

Damien’s curiosity was evidently piqued by this enigmatic stranger. He set his glass down, moving closer, "I’m Damien. And you?"

"Ryder," he answered succinctly.

Damien chuckled softly, "Ryder, you intrigue me."

Ryder arched an eyebrow, "Oh? Why is that?"

"Because you don’t seem like someone who just wandered in here for fun." Damien's eyes sharpened, as though attempting to pierce through Ryder's façade.

Ryder remained unfazed, his smile unwavering, "Perhaps you're overthinking it. I just happened to pass by."

Damien's smile deepened, a fleeting, inscrutable gleam in his eyes, "In any case, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Ryder."

"The pleasure is mutual," Ryder sipped his drink, though he couldn't help but be drawn to the depth of Damien’s gaze.

Their conversation continued at the bar, appearing to be casual chatter, yet every word carried underlying currents of probing and challenge. Ryder knew Damien was no ordinary opponent, and Damien had undoubtedly sensed something unusual about Ryder.

As the night wore on and the bar's clamor gradually subsided, Ryder decided to make his move. He leaned closer to Damien, whispering, "It’s too noisy here. Want to go somewhere quieter?"

A glimmer of amusement flickered in Damien’s eyes. He nodded, smiling, "What do you suggest?"

Ryder smirked, his eyes holding a subtle challenge, "You’re the master of this city. Surely you don't need me to make the arrangements?"

Damien laughed heartily, though his gaze grew sharper, "You truly are different from the rest. Very well, I’m curious to see where you’ll take me."

They left the bar, the night air brushing against them with a hint of coolness. Ryder led Damien through several quiet streets, eventually arriving at a secluded dock.

A small boat awaited them. Ryder was the first to board, turning back to look at Damien, "Come on, no one will disturb us here."

Damien raised an eyebrow, seemingly surprised by Ryder's audacity, but he didn’t question it and followed him onto the boat.

The boat drifted gently on the lake, the surroundings hushed save for the soft lapping of water against the hull. Ryder stood at the stern, his gaze fixed on the distant city lights, his silhouette exuding a profound loneliness.

Damien approached him from behind, his voice low, "Who are you really?"

Ryder turned, meeting Damien's gaze head-on, his eyes devoid of fear or hesitation, "Just someone insignificant."

"I doubt that," Damien narrowed his eyes, a dangerous glint in them, "You seem to be hiding many secrets."

Ryder smiled serenely, "Everyone has secrets, don't they?"

Damien stared at him, then suddenly spoke softly, "I don’t like people with too many secrets."

Ryder held his gaze, unflinching, "Maybe you’ll make an exception for me."

The two stood facing each other, the tension between them palpable, as if a single spark could ignite the latent danger.

Damien suddenly laughed, a hint of admiration in his tone, "You’re intriguing, Ryder. I think we’ll have much to discuss."

"Perhaps," Ryder’s voice remained calm, though a sharp glint flickered in his eyes.

That night, they talked extensively on the lake, their words appearing to be mere idle chatter, though Ryder knew Damien was testing him just as he was testing Damien.

As the night deepened, Damien finally broke the silence, leaning closer to Ryder, his eyes fixed on his lips as he murmured, "Ryder, I look forward to our next meeting."

Ryder nodded, his gaze steady, laced with a cold resolve, "There will be one."

When the boat slowly docked, Damien turned and left, while Ryder remained by the pier, watching his retreating figure, already calculating his next move.

"Damien, you will be my prey," Ryder silently vowed, his eyes gleaming with icy determination.

However, what he did not yet realize was that the outcome of this hunt had already been fated to defy his expectations. The intertwining of fate often reverses the roles of hunter and prey in the most unexpected ways.

Chapter 2: The Hunter and the Prey

Since his encounter with Damien at the dock, Ryder's life seemed to have taken on a strange rhythm. He continued to follow his daily routine, doing things that appeared unrelated to his mission, yet the tension in his mind never eased. He knew that all of this was just a prelude to getting closer to Damien—a more dangerous game had already begun to unfold in the shadows.

To avoid arousing suspicion, Ryder started to frequent the places Damien often visited. He learned Damien's habits, knew the places he liked, the type of people he favored, and even anticipated what he might do at different times of the day. Like a patient leopard, he silently observed every subtle movement of his target, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

On this particular day, Ryder chose a private club that Damien frequented. The club was located in the city's affluent district, discreet and luxurious, with only a select fe
