Annotation

"Hey- don't be like that. You are worthy. Why do you think you aren't worthy of this love and care I give to you? Don't you know you are irreplaceable, I need you more than I need myself, so please don't ever say you're not worthy because you are!!" Sung Miguel moved from New York to Seoul, South Korea with his father and sister. A day after, he had a fateful meeting with a girl named Kim Byeol, a girl who couldn't speak. When he joined Yeong gi Academy in his final year he met Kim Byeol again. To him, she was a very interesting weird girl. Although most people didn't want to have anything to do with her, most times she was even bullied, Miguel still found ways to speak to her and ended up befriending her. The thought of this two ever getting along would be the last thing in people's minds After all, Miguel was somewhat perfect, social and carefree, while Byeol appears meek and distant to her classmates except for Jae-Hwa and Ji-won. Having opposite personalities yet went through quite similar experiences , the two quickly become friends and often spend time together. As they both emerge from their shells, they share a side of themselves concealed from the outside world. N/B: I'm not from South Korea, so if you find any fault then I apologize... I will try my best to show alittle bit of the South Korean culture in this book.:D

Prologue

The only living being in a small dark and empty room with no window and only one door was a girl laying on the ground, heavily wounded, with her hands, mouth, and legs all tied up.

Two hulking men in black suits, wearing dark shades, walked in and turned on the lights. The two men made way for another man to enter, dressed in a white tuxedo and fancy black leather shoes. He had a bald head and a grey beard. He approached the girl on the floor and said,

"You thought you could run away from me, my dear, you thought you won when that nosy Aunt of yours took me to jail," he said evilly, his wrinkled face smirking.

The girl couldn't move and her vision was blurry, but she could tell that this person's voice sounded familiar, 'Uncle? 'Why is uncle here?' she wondered, trembled violently and started to move backwards.

"Grab her and bring her to me," her uncle chuckled, looking at his two bodyguards.

The girl shook her head with pleading eyes and tried to move away, but it was useless because the bodyguards grabbed her arm and threw her to her uncle. Her uncle chuckled and knelt before her, caressing her face and saying, "you look prettier this way, you know, petrified, scared, and in pain," as tears streamed down her cheek.

" Shush! don't cry, I'm not here to do anything to you, at least not yet, I just want us to play a new game, it's called 'try to escape from here,' I know it's not a catchy name, but it's the best I have."

He continued, " Anyway, if you can get out of here within a week, you're free, but if you don't, you know what the punishment is, don't you?"

"Look at me and tell me you understand," he said after she sniffed. He snatched her face and forced her to look at him, but she refused.

" Look at me, you mute b*tch"

He yelled, but she still refused to look at him.

He yelled again, "she's testing my patience, bring the whip!" One of the bodyguards walked away and returned with a long whip. When she saw the whip, various horrible memories began to flood back to her.

'No, no, not again, I'm scared, please help!' Her breathing was no longer steady, she realised. The bodyguard moved to her side and placed the whip in her uncle's hands.

"Hold her down so she doesn't move," He stated, "She shook her head vigorously and attempted to say something, but all that came out of her mouth was, "mmhmm mhmm mmm!"

Her uncle leaned in closer and asked, "huh? What exactly did you say? I'm sorry I couldn't understand you, but you can't speak"

"Do you know why all this is happening to you, do you know why your parents died that day, do you know why I made sure you suffered since that day?" he grabbed her hair again,

"First and foremost, I despised the fact that my brother had such a lovely wife and daughter; this is not to say that I murdered them; I could never do so. Anyway, the only reason you're in pain is that you resemble your mother, my sister-in-law, and the love of my life."

Her brow furrowed as she glared daggers at him; he noticed her glare and burst out laughing, "I think you understand the whole story, I don't need to tell you more than that, I have always wanted to do things with you that I couldn't do with your mother and that is why I don't want you to look at me like that, it's annoying," he said and slapped her across the face.

"Those eyes of yours remind me so much of my brother, that b*st*rd, he took the love of my life, but now he's dead and I have his daughter," he added, laughing maniacally.

"I don't want to stain my clothes today, so gentlemen, whip her this time, and don't give her food either, okay," he said as he handed one of them the whip.

He still clutched her hair and declared, "I win, and no one can stop me this time." He released her hair and nodded to her bodyguards. They returned the nod and turned to face her.

" Thirty strokes and don't stop, have fun Byeol," He said. She struggled to free herself from their grip, but it was pointless; she watched with outstretched arms, her uncle's frame slowly moving away, 'I don't want to be hit again, not again no, no, no!! '.

Chapter 1: Our Home Country

On a beautiful, calm Saturday morning...

As usual, the New York suburbs had a very serene and calm atmosphere in the neighborhood... except for one household that was always noisy.

"Come on, Dad," Miguel yelled, his father glare giving him a shiver down his spine.

"Mugol, Megali, or Miguel, this is my final decision. ugh! Whatever your name is," his father said as he flipped through the newspapers in his hands.

Miguel furrowed his thin brows as he thought, 'This old man doesn't even know my name.'

He encircled his chest with his hands,

"Look, Dad, I'm happy here, and I have good friends; why do we have to move to South Korea?"

"I'm not sure why you're complaining; the friends you keep are useless, especially that girlfriend of yours, what's her name again?" His father responded without looking at him.

"Lucy? How about Lucy?" Miguel laughed.
