Sinopse

In her past life, Vivian Davis was the biggest fool. Soft-hearted and trusting, she survived three brutal years in the post-apocalyptic wasteland—only to be strangled to death by her manipulative best friend, Chloe, while her boyfriend stood by and watched. Death should have been the end. Instead, Vivian wakes up ten hours before the outbreak. She has three years of wasteland survival instincts, the memories of everyone who betrayed her, and something she never possessed in her previous life: Chloe's compulsion power. With fake, Vivian can make men instinctively want to protect her, obey her, and fight for her. So she decides to put it to good use. To the world, Vivian is a fragile damsel who needs saving but behind closed doors, she's a cold-blooded survivor who can drive a blade through an infected brainstem without blinking. Her act fools everyone—except Captain Rex Lawson, the sharp-tongued commander of the shelter's mercenaries. Immune to her compulsion, Rex seems to see straight through her performance. Yet, instead of exposing her, he makes her an unexpected offer. If Vivian wants to survive this apocalypse, she'll have to play by his rules. Rex can set the rules. Vivian will decide how the game is played.

Chapter 1 THE COLD TANK FLOOR

The crushing pressure around Vivian Davis’ throat was unbearable.

Air couldn't pass. Her trachea creaked under the brutal pressure of two hands—small hands, manicured hands, belonging to a woman she had called her sister for years.

“I’m sorry, Vivi,” Chloe Bennett’s voice echoed above her, sweet and dripping with false sorrow.

“The shelter only has rations for one more person in the inner tier. Julian says I deserve to live more. I'm a fragile girl who can’t even hold a gun. Don’t worry... I’ll make sure he remembers you.”

Then came the sickening crack. And everything went dark.

Vivian’s eyes snapped open. She jolted upright, gasping for air as her lungs expanded with a painful heave.

She slammed her hands against her throat. No bruises. No crushed cartilage. Her skin was smooth, warm, and intact.

Her heart hammered against her ribs as she frantically scanned her surroundings.

She wasn't on the cold floor of the Grand Horizon shelter's water filtration room. She was sitting on a suede sofa inside her luxury apartment living room.

Soft afternoon sunlight filtered through the curtains, illuminating dust motes floating lazily in the air.

Vivian grabbed her phone off the glass coffee table with trembling fingers. The digital clock blinked back at her:

OCTOBER 12, 08:14 AM.

Ten hours. She was back. She was exactly ten hours before the V-Toxin strain breached the city’s water reservoir and turned eight million citizens into feral infected overnight.

“Vivi? Are you okay, sweetie?”

The voice sent a chill through Vivian’s blood.

Chloe stood in the kitchen doorway, holding two ceramic mugs of coffee. She looked harmless—dressed in an oversized pastel cardigan, her wide, innocent eyes brimming with concern.

In her past life, Vivian had trusted that look. She had survived three years of wasteland hell, only for her "best friend" that she had always protected, fed and brought into the shelter to choke her from behind on a cold floor.

“You looked like you were having a nightmare,” Chloe cooed, walking over and placing the mugs on the table.

She sat beside Vivian, reaching out to pat her knee. “You've been so stressed lately about Julian. I keep telling you, if he's pulling away, you just need to show him how much you need him. Men like Julian love playing the hero.”

And she remembered Julian. Wealthy, arrogant Julian Sterling—her boyfriend—standing few feet away, watching her thrash for breath. He didn't stop chloe and the last thing she remembered was him holding Chloe's waist as she tightened the wire.

They took everything from me, Vivian thought, This time, I'm taking the crown.

She watched Chloe’s hand on her knee feeling disgusted.

In her past life, Chloe had possessed a strange, almost irresistible charm. Whenever Chloe cried or looked frightened, every man within sight—including Julian, guards, and hardened scavengers—would drop everything to shield her. Vivian used to think Chloe was just remarkably lucky or naturally endearing.

She hadn't realized until her final moments that Chloe possessed a rare psychic mutation: a compulsion aura triggered by her tears.

Suddenly, a strange chill bloomed in the center of Vivian’s chest. It felt like liquid mercury slipping down her sternum, gathering into a cold, heavy pool.

She glanced down at her hands, then back at Chloe, who was casually sliding her fingers toward Vivian’s designer handbag on the couch—the bag containing Vivian’s apartment keycard, credit cards, and the keys to her utility SUV.

She’s trying to steal my keys before the outbreak even starts, Vivian realized.

The heat in Vivian's chest flared. Instinctively, Vivian understood.

Chloe's power has become hers.

Rule one, an internal voice whispered to her, instinct guiding the power. The compulsion requires a show of weakness. Rule two: The tears must be fake. Real emotion breaks the spell.

Vivian didn't yell or slap Chloe’s hand away.

Instead, she let her shoulders slump, pinched her leg beneath the couch cushions—just enough to trigger her body’s physical response without feeling emotional grief—and blinked rapidly.

A tear welled in her left eye and slipped down her porcelain cheek

"Chloe..." Vivian whispered, her voice cracking with delicate despair. "Why are you looking at my bag like that? Are... are you going to leave me?"

The effect was instantaneous.

The air in the room seemed to shift. An invisible pulse rippled outward from Vivian's skin.

Chloe froze. Her fingers twitched away from the purse as if she had touched hot iron. But it wasn't Chloe who reacted most violently.

BANG!

The front door flew open. Marcus, the armed private security guard who patrolled the hallway, burst into the living room, one hand resting firmly on his sidearm. He had been walking past the door when the psychic frequency pierced the heavy wood and reached him.

"Is everything alright in here?!" Marcus demanded, his eyes sweeping the room until they landed on Vivian’s weeping face.

The moment Marcus saw Vivian’s tear-stained cheek and trembling lip, his posture changed. His pupils dilated. A fierce look of protectiveness crossed his rugged features, overriding his professional boundaries.

"Hey!" Marcus barked, his voice dropping into a protective roar as he pointed at Chloe. "Hands away from her! What the hell are you doing to Miss Jones?!"

Chloe blinked, bewildered. "What? Nothing! I was just—"

"I saw you reaching for her things!" Marcus stepped forward, shoving Chloe roughly back onto the carpet. Chloe gasped, landing hard on her elbow. "Miss Davis is a gentle girl! You step away from her right now, or I’m throwing you off this floor!"

Chloe looked terrified, staring at the guard in disbelief. "Marcus, are you crazy?! I’m her friend!"

"You're making her cry!" Marcus growled, stepping in front of Vivian like a shield.

Sitting quietly on the couch behind the towering guard, Vivian wiped the single fake tear from her cheek.

Her face was completely emotionless. Her eyes were as cold as ice.

It works,Vivian thought, a thrill running through her veins. It really works.

She looked down at Chloe, who was trembling on the floor, confused and helpless without the charm she used to rely on.

Vivian leaned back against the cushions, her voice dropping into a helpless whisper. "Marcus... she scared me so much. Could you please help me pack my SUV downstairs? I don't feel safe here anymore."

"Of course, Miss Davis ," Marcus declared without a second thought, drawing his weapon to cover her exit. "Anything you need."

Vivian smiled—a small, angelic, poison-laced smile that Chloe couldn't see.

The game had begun.

Chapter 2 THE ART OF CROCODILE TEARS

Vivian didn't waste a second. While Marcus guarded her with exaggerated vigilance, his eyes scanning the empty hallway as if snipers lurked in the shadows, Vivian moved through her apartment quickly and methodically.

She packed high-calorie provisions, cases of bottled water, medical supplies, multi-tools, and every piece of durable outdoor clothing she owned.

Chloe lay on the living room floor, nursing her bruised elbow and staring at Vivian with a mixture of shock and resentment.

"Vivi, what is wrong with you?!" Chloe hissed under her breath, keeping her voice low so Marcus wouldn't hear. "You're acting like a freak! You let that crazy guard push me!"

Vivian paused near the kitchen counter, picking up a heavy stainless-steel thermos. She turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto Chloe.

There was no warmth in Vivian’s eyes. No affection, no past history. Just a flat, calculating evaluation—the look of a butcher inspecting meat.
