Chapter 1
Frank
"Where the f*ck is he?" I hear Beta Alfie yell. I had already concluded he was talking to me, the only house servant. I sat up and stood up, grabbing the cleaning basket and taking it with me.
The moment Beta Alfie sees me, he comes towards me and his hand slashes against my face. I don't say a word. Years of training have taught me to keep my mouth shut at all times and speak only when addressed, however painful what they are doing to me is.
"Alpha Sebastian and I are having people over, and you still have not cleaned the office as you were told." Beta Alfie spits at me. I nod my head and my hold on the cleaning basket tightens. If only I were brave enough to spin it around and hit him over the head, it would be worth my while. I fought; he was larger than me, and I did not have to spend another week in detention with no food to eat. My stomach already ached.
"We're attempting to make a good impression on Alpha Oliver. Do you not see how important it is for us to join his pack?! He does not inform me as to why we need help.". We'd never attacked anyone, and we'd never been attacked, so why did we need another pack now? He puts hands on my shoulders, nails biting into my receding skin and spins me around, kicking me in the backside as he shoves me toward the office. "Useless f*ck*ng Wolf." He snarls as he heads off.
Gently closing the door behind me, I sit back on it, gazing at the already clean office. Everything was in place; it was just as it should be for a meeting with this so-called mighty Alpha. Closing my eyes, I sit on the floor. I hated this house. I pictured that when I was eighteen, I would be free to run, but four years past and here I am, a slave in what is meant to be my pack home. Doing all the menial work for my uncle, Alpha Sebastian, and the pack. With my former mate, Beta Alfie, walking around informing me of how much use I am not.
There is a clearing in my throat and I tense up. I thought that I was by myself. Sitting forward, I see a fine-looking man in a chair around the corner. A foot on his knee as he holds a glass of liquor. Dark short hair and deep red-colored eyes that don't appear to be normal.
They stand up to me abruptly, and I recline against the door as my heart pounded. "Is this how you welcome all Alpha's?" His deep voice booms across the room. There was a crux of humor in his tone.
"I apologize," I say softly, rising up. "I… believed I was alone." I had no idea who he was but I could feel the authority radiating from him, even without my Wolf. He doesn't greet me either, why should he? "Come forward." He orders, and already I've got a lump developing in my throat. My uncle was going to kill me. I come around the corner, as he asked, so he can catch sight of me. I shut my eyes to prepare myself for the worst.
"You smell odd. But you're a Wolf, aren't you?" I nod, though I wasn't sure how he'd take it. Most laughed when they found out about me.
"I would like for you to address me." He growls. "I don't feel like playing games." "Yes." I whisper. I couldn't help but consider all the punishment I would endure. A whipping perhaps? Starving for another week? "Why are you smelling strange? And why is it that you did not know that I was in the room? You should have smelt me." "I…." I hated the question. "Spit it out, I haven't got all day!
" He takes a swig from his drink.
I knew why I couldn't smell him. I knew why I hadn't seen he was there, but telling people why was something I never did and didn't enjoy. They never let me tell them my side of the story. They just laugh and tease me.
"You have to have your eyes open when you are talking to someone. Picking your nose is rude. Has your Alpha never taught you anything?" His deep voice sends shivers through me.
I slowly open my eyes and gaze downwards. No chance I was making eye contact. "My Wolf powers were bound," I tell him. Twice, I believe. Twice my powers were bound. But he probably didn't care about hearing about that bit. He leans forward, placing his glass on the small table to the side of the chair. I felt him staring at me. "Why on earth would anyone do that? Gosh, if this is the Alpha that my uncle is going to meet, I knew I could spoil it all for him by not shutting up.
"It was a punishment." I whisper.
It was nowhere near the entire truth but it was the simplest answer I could give. There is a spasm in his cheek. Was he enraged that he had heard such a sentence? Or maybe, like the others, was he laughing about it. I could not say. The door swings open and my uncle shrieks at me, "Frank, what the f*ck are you doing in my office? "He looks at the red-eyed man." "I'm sorry that my nephew is bothering you, Alpha Oliver." Crap, it was him.
My uncle turns back, hand raised to hit me.
I close my eyes, bracing myself, expecting the burn.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Alpha Oliver's deep voice echoes through the room. Glancing through the slits, I glimpse Alpha Oliver standing up, his arm wrapped around my uncle's wrist. He was taller than my uncle, stronger too. "Frank," My name rolled right off of his lips, "wasCourtesy extended into your office, Alpha Sebastian, since you didn't meet me at the front of your house like I asked. I was lucky someone was there, at least someone knows how crucial this deal is." What? I had no idea what he was talking about. And he surely had nothing to gain by lying about me. My uncle glares at me with his jaw clenched. I was going to be paying for this later. I would need to try and steal some food. "Go and get Beta Alfie." Alpha Sebastian growls. "Tell him that our guest is here." I nod my head and make a quick exit out of the room. The last place I wanted to be was between brawling men. "Beta Alfie," I whisper as I approach the dining hall. He instinctively glares at me with his black eyes. I had spoken without being spoken to. "Alpha Sebastian is in the office with Alpha Oliver. You were instructed to report to me." He slams the newspaper down on the table and glares at me as he heads away.
"You're fortunate the Alpha had you go get me, otherwise you'd not be seeing the sunlight for a couple of days." At my back, he pulls my head back, his fingers together in my hair, leaning on me. I can feel his warm breath on my skin. He didn't say one word, it was just the way he indicated that he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. I try to keep myself busy so that I can stay as far from the office as possible. My peace of mind does not last long when I happen to hear my uncle's voice, calling out to me towards the office. Stealthily, I make my way to the office and put on a fake smile as I open the door slightly. Frank, grab the champagne and some glasses, we're celebrating." I duck my head and make a dash for the drinks cabinet, hastily grabbing what my uncle has asked for.
As I re-enter the office, I can feel Alpha Oliver's gaze on me every step of the way.
The hairs at the back of my neck bristle.
No one ever looks at me so keenly.
Walking over to the little table beside Alpha Oliver's chair, I start filling glasses. He takes the champagne bottle from me, informing me that he is perfectly capable of pouring his own glass. I feel my cheeks flushing, but not with shame, for I knew that I will be scolded about it. I could have been quicker. I could have filled the glasses before entering the office. I could have… I blank out when I glance at my uncle fuming at me. "Frank's your nephew, isn't he?" Alpha Oliver questions my uncle. "He is." Alpha Sebastian snarls with disgust. He sidles away from me to focus on the interrogator. "Why you treat him like dog crap?" To the point, my uncle would not have liked that. He loved providing information on his own terms.
No one ever informed my uncle how he was treating me because everyone took great enjoyment in beating me.
I didn't have the faintest idea what to do!
I couldn't budge but I knew that I must get out of there. If this setup goes to hell because of me, then that would be my fault as well. Frank is the murderer of our parents." Alpha Sebastian spits. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut, struggling to hold back the tears from spilling out. "How responsible?" Alpha Oliver's deep voice booms through me. He was furious. "Served them Wolfsbane." I knew Alpha Oliver was staring at me. They all were; no one was ever capable of quite believing that someone might just get up and do something so repulsive as poisoning their own parents. I was leaning there with my face in my hands, hoping in vain the earth would open and swallow me up. There were shuffles on either side of me. He was right in front of me. With a coarse finger, he pushed my face up toward his, forcing me to stare at him.
He encircled his hand around my throat, but he did not squeeze. "You poisoned your parents?" "I was six," I panted. "I gave them lemonade." My voice squeaked as I protested. I barely remembered my parents, but I remembered all the guilt I had been made to feel ever since. His reddened eyes snapped to my uncle's. "Hardly fair to blame a six-year-old." "A six-year-old can tell plants apart," Alpha Sebastian snapped. "Sounds to me like he was set up," Alpha Oliver shrugged his shoulders, loosening my throat.
"We all know regular wolfsbane doesn't hurt us anymore.
We outgrew that sh*t centuries ago." What? What did he mean? Wolfsbane hadn't killed anyone. I'd been beaten into believing that since I was little. "Which only leaves Blood of Wolfsbane," Alpha Oliver snarled. "You weren't there, Alpha Oliver," my uncle growled through gritted teeth as his eyes sl*t into thin lines. "It was wolfsbane." He nodded his head. "You're right. I wasn't here." Good, now there was someone else who could remember something I had done accidentally years ago.
"But tell me, where would a six-year-old find Blood of Wolfsbane?
"<< "I didn't bring you here to talk about my slave!
" Alpha Sebastian growled.
"Or whatever you did to my parents." Alpha Oliver took his leather jacket off the chair.
While the rest of the alphas were dressed in formal attire,
he wore less formal clothes.
A simple black t-shirt and jeans clung to his gigantic frame.
And unlike the rest of the alphas, his arms were free of tattoos; no speck of ink bulged anywhere.
"Good idea, and now I have something to think about." "We had an agreement," my uncle complained. "Nothing has been signed. Now I will show myself out." The minute he had closed the office door behind him, both my uncle and Beta Alfie turned on me. "What the f*ck did you tell him?" my uncle yelled, thumping a hand into my stomach. "N-nothing. And then he just asked me why I smelled odd." "Did you tell him?" Beta Alfie growled. He was actually spitting in my face. I hated him. I was so furious at him that I had promised myself one day to get revenge on him and rip out his stomach from his mouth. WELL?" my uncle yelled when I didn't respond immediately and hit me on the side of the head. My head bobbed up and down involuntarily. "But I didn't say it was you." I tried to sound firm and commanding, but all I could do was whisper it. If they weren't wolves, then chances are they might not have been able to hear me. My uncle's hand wrapped in my dark locks and he yanked back my head, sending stinging pain through my skull. "If you've ruined this, you'll never know the light of day again." He yanked on my hair and dragged me from the office and down the hall towards the door leading to the basement. "Please…" I begged. "He was an alpha… I… I had to react to him." My cheeks burned with my tears as he swung open the door. Behind the door was Alpha Oliver. He stood leaning on the wall, arms crossed, staring at us. My uncle removed his hand from my hair and gentled the pressure at the back of my head. "Alpha Oliver, I thought you had already left," Alpha Sebastian spoke quietly with a tone of anger. I told him I would show myself out. I thought I had found the door, but what I find is a basement, smelling of your nephew's odd scent. Do you treat your relatives like this?" "As I said," my uncle was adamant, "He is the one who murdered my parents, so yes, this is what he will receive." "You need to mind other packs' business!" Beta Alfie stepped in. Alpha Oliver smiled. "If I take this deal, everything that's your business is my business. So what would you punish him with? No food, in lockup for a week, beatings?"
"We don't—"
"Really?"
He cocked an eyebrow, "You really expect me to believe that you'd just let him sleep?"
I have already stopped you from hitting him once.
"His eyes roamed over me." "He is emaciated, bags hang under his tired blue eyes."
Not like an alpha's nephew at least. Whatever he supposedly did when he was a pup." "He did do it!" Alpha Sebastian's rage raged. "And he has no part in our agreement." "That's my choice." His red-rimmed eyes flashed around the hallway. "Where is your lover? I would like to see how she feels." I closed my eyes and silently wished my uncle would not call his Luna. Luna Eleanor was worse than Beta Alfie and Alpha Sebastian put together. "On second thought, do not disturb her. I am sure she is as gross as you." He growled. I peered through slits to see his red eyes upon me. He didn't need to guard me, and yet he was. I was nobody, no one worth anything. Just what everyone called a traitor. Only instead of being condemned to death, my uncle had decided to let me suffer the rest of my days. "I have an offer for you, Alpha Sebastian." Alpha Oliver was smiling at my uncle.
"We have already agreed." "Well, I'm adding one. And if you refuse to agree, you will not get my help. Instead, you will be my foe. And we both know, you don't want that." "I assume that your new stipulations have something to do with him?" Alpha Sebastian snarled through clenched teeth. "You would be right.". Let me take him away to my pack, and then you, Sebastian, will have a deal." Me? Why would he want me?
While my uncle and his beta were deciding about me, Alpha Oliver was still watching me. His expression sent shivers down my spine. What could a person like him possibly do with me? "Deal." Alpha Sebastian extended his hand for Alpha Oliver to shake. He didn't take it. Rather, his blood-red eyes shifted from my uncle and me to the front door.
"I will have papers prepared and will return tomorrow." He reached out a hand and gripped my face, "Be sure you have everything in readiness." He stroked his thumb over my lower lip and moved to the opposite side of the hall and straight to the front door.
He knew where the front door was, so why did he go? He paused at the door. “If I find out any one of you has laid a hand on him, the contract will be the last thing you need to worry about.” He strutted out, slamming the door behind him.
Chapter 2
"Get out of my sight!" my uncle barked at me.
Racing upstairs, I flung myself into my small bedroom. It was nearly bare; all I had was a few sets of clothes. It would take less than a minute to pack.
By the time morning arrived, I had yet to sleep. Alpha Oliver's questions were echoing in my head, and why exactly was I so interesting to a wolf such as him? There was a reason why he had the biggest pack. They were renowned for their fighting; that is why my uncle wanted to combine Silvermere with Alpha Oliver's pack, but where did I fit into all this? And what the bloody hell is Blood of Wolfsbane?
Oliver
"Tenth bride's the charm." Rupert teases as the driver stops outside Silvermere's packhouse.
"Shut up!" Thomas snarls at him "Both of you close your f*ck*ng mouths. Before you open your trap and say something you'll regret! He will never learn," My wolf, Theo, considers.
The driver opens the door. "Just give me a sec, I have to speak to my men." T
