Annotation

For as long as she can remember, Alexis has found her purpose within the quiet walls of the covenant and her life dedicated entirely to God. Beyond the convent gates, her world is smaller: just Jana, the little sister she barely knows, raised by their aunt Antoinette and uncle Martin after their parents’ bitter separation tore the family apart. While Alexis walks the path of faith, Jana blooms in the chaos of university life and is haunted by the soft mystery of anonymous notes left on her desk. Then, one ordinary day, she fails to come home. Antoinette and Martin search the streets until their feet ache and their eyes burn with tears, their worst fears growing with each sleepless night that passes. The news comes like a thunderclap: an abandoned house in the heart of the woods, swallowed by fire. When police arrive, all they find is ash and a body, so badly burnt it is unrecognizable. Days later, the DNA results confirm the unthinkable: it is Jana. In that moment, Alexis’s faith shatters into a million pieces. The prayers that once sustained her fell silent. The covenant that was her sanctuary feels like a cage. With a heart heavy enough to break, she removes her habit for the last time, stepping out into a world she has long avoided. Filled with grief, anger, and desperate to know the truth. No longer bound by vows of peace, Alexis embarks on a journey to uncover what really happened in the woods that night. For the first time in her life, she will trade prayer for investigation, mercy for justice, and discover that the line between good and evil is far thinner than she ever imagined.

Prologue

Prologue

It was pitch-black inside the church, and outside, it was raining heavily. The flash of the lightning was the only light that brightened the dark church. No one was there, for it was midnight, and only restless souls would attempt to visit the church during these hours.

A heavy feeling of grief filled her heart as she passed by the aisle. She was gripping her wimple and was staring at the altar with wet eyes. Her restless soul was deeply mourning, and only the echo of her footsteps could be heard aside from the rain and thunder.

“I-I devoted my whole life to you,” she mumbled between sobs as she continued to walk closer to the altar. “I only asked… For her better life and bright future.“

She paused as a tear escaped from her eyes once again. She had been crying for 2 nights and still felt the pain that hurt her. Not only that, but she stuttered every time she tried to speak. Constantly crying for two nights made her voice hoarse and unrecognizable.

Another lightning flash brightened her image that stood in front of the altar as she slammed her hand that held her wimple on the center table. The silence that was once her sanctuary became deafening that she could clearly hear the downpour drumming on the roof.

“But what have you gotten her into!” She yelled, although it sounded inaudible because of the blaring sound of every raindrop on the earth. Tears streamed down her cheeks; her entire body was shaking with so much anger that she held back.

Her faded lips were shaking as she stared at the image of God on the cross. Guilt crossed her mind as she broke down again. Bitter questions were shuffling in her mind, misgiving the path that she chose for her life.

Her broken soul conquered the entire darkness. She looked down and saw traces of her tears falling on the top sheet of the table. She gasped on her chest, gripping onto her habit while her tears endlessly continued to flow.

Furthermore, she glanced at the wimple that she was gripping the entire time. Her pale lips clenched, she brushed her thumb against the wimple, closed her eyes, and looked down. Her breath caught in her throat with her jaw clenched, wrinkling the wimple on her hand.

Out of anger, she threw the wimple across her and wailed at the same time. A loud thunder cracked from the sky as a strong wind burst in through the window. Her long reddish-brown hair snaked in the air, feeling the blow of the wind against her skin, and smudges of rain caught her body.

Chills started to get in her; the wind brushed against her face, and her cheeks were soaking wet with tears. Her red eyes looked up to the cross as another thunder roared from the sky.

“Am I a bad daughter to you?” she questioned, letting her bitterness talk. Her once soft and comforting voice was now deep and filled with grievance.

She was torn between mercy and vengeance that she didn't know what was right or wrong. She started to doubt her belief, her faith, and her entire life.

A crashing boom of thunder rumbled in the silence of the night, followed by nothing but the heavy rain that resounded in the whole place. Every raindrop seemed to mourn with her broken heart. A warm sensation suddenly surrounded the complete place, despite the cold breeze that overcame. Her swollen eyes slowly closed, and in that moment she felt nothing but the warmth that got through her.

She let the warm feeling get in her, making her tears magically go away and calming her heart. She rested her grieving soul with the touch of the familiar warm sensation. Her eyes were slowly closing as if it was inviting her to rest.

Another lightning stroke, and her eyes automatically opened. Her hands slowly clenched while resting on the top of the table. A tear escaped from her eye, and the warm sensation was slowly fading, being replaced by coldness that opened her eyes to reality. Her lips were shaking as she stuttered to speak. She took a deep breath, gathering all the courage to speak once more.

“Justice has never been served well to righteous ones.” She said in a low but desperate, hoarse voice, “Is that supposed to be that way?"

A loud thunder broke from the sky as lightning flashed in the air. The heavy rain continued as the wind blew furiously, bursting inside the open windows. She gulped hard, for she knew the sign must be an answer to her bitterness.

“Put me to death if it has to be. But forgive me, Father. For I will surely serve justice to righteous people. In my way.”

Chapter 01

Jana was rushing to her school when she realized she was 30 minutes late for the first subject in the morning. Her hair was a mess, and the students were staring at her while gossiping. She didn't bother to mind them and went to a car that was parked in front of the principal's office. She thought of at least fixing her hair before proceeding to her room.

Right after he turned off the engine, he pulled out a white plastic envelope from the seat next to him. He was about to open the car when he noticed Jana combing her hair while looking at her reflection from the window of the driver's seat. The window glass was tainted. He was able to see Jana while Jana wasn't able to see if someone was inside the car. But she didn't bother thinking about whether someone was inside, as long as she could fix her hair.

He was unable to move. His eyes were wandering on her face. Observing every move the girl made. He could almost hear his he
