Chapter 1
CASSANDRA’S POV
“It's over between us.” Luke dropped the bombshell, making me widen my eyes in disbelief as I stared at him in awe.
“L… Luke What do you mean by it’s over between us”? I managed to ask him as my gaze remained fixed on him.
He had an unreadable expression on his face, but I wouldn't let it get to me.
“I don't want to get married to you, Cassandra,” he said, and immediately, I broke into laughter.
I was sure now that he was only trying to pull my leg, because there is no way he could be serious right now.
I mean, we have been together for two good years, so there is no way he would just leave me without any good reason. I mean, I never did anything wrong in the first place.
“Okay, you got me there; this is literally the best joke I have ever gotten in years. It's really so funny,” I said, laughing the more.
But there was no smile on his face; rather, he was way too serious to be joked with, and that made me kind of have a strange feeling, but I tried to cover it up with laughter.
“It's no joke, Cassandra; it's reality,” he said, and again his word hit me, making me stop laughing and face him fully.
“I won't let you get to me with this joke of yours, so please let's just get back to the party; the guests are waiting for you to propose,” I said, taking his hands into mine.
I hoped silently that he wasn't really serious and he would just quit the joke already and allow us to go back in, because that's all I wanted right now.
I have gone through so much already, so I do not want any hurt right now; I bet I won't be able to even stand it right now.
“Look, Cassandra, I know this is difficult for you to take in, but it's nothing but the truth. I don't want to be with you anymore,” he said, pulling his hands away from me.
“Why, what did I ever do that would make you break up with me?” I asked him, with tears clouding my eyes now.
Now I know it wasn't a joke; he was actually breaking up with me without me doing anything wrong to him. That's really so unfair.
"You didn't do anything wrong, but I just realized that you aren't good enough for me. I'm sorry it's taken me this long to realize it,” he said, making me widen my eyes in disbelief.
“Luke What are you saying? What do you mean by I’m not good enough for you”? This question rang out of my mouth as I stared at him, with tears threatening to flow down my cheeks now.
“Yes, Cassandra, I don't want to be with you anymore; this engagement can't go on,” he told me, and immediately I felt my heart shatter into a thousand pieces.
The tears I had been trying to blink back for a while now finally had the chance to flow down my cheeks.
I felt really devastated and shattered, and I didn't even know what else to say to him, so I just kept quiet for a while and stared at him with tears in my eyes.
“Please tell me if there is anything I have ever done wrong to you, and then I would apologize for it right away,” I said, while he took a deep breath before speaking up.
“Cassandra, the truth is, you have no family, and it doesn't tell well of my reputation, plus my family would never approve of it if they learned of this,” he said while I just remained calm.
“I'm really sorry, Cassandra, but we really can't be together,” he said, patting my shoulder gently.
“No, Luke, you can't do this to me; please don't do it. I'm begging you. Today is a very important day to us, and the fact that I'm an orphan doesn't change anything.” I paused to catch my breath before I continued.
“Today is our engagement day, and I love you so much, so please don't do this to me; don't hurt me this way, please,” I pleaded, my tears flowing down my cheeks like rain now.
I stared at him, hoping he would reconsider and not do what he had just said. I can't face the world if he does this.
I can't go back to the party if he continues like this. We have been together for too long for him to just end it with me this way, without me doing anything wrong to deserve it.
“Well, I'm sorry that I made you love me, but there is no way I can be with you now, so please understand this, and don't take it to heart,” he told me.
“We have plans for our future together, so why do you want to do this to us now that we are so close to being together forever?” I asked him, my face swollen now due to the cry.
“I have plans for the future, but it's not with you, Cassandra. I'm sorry,” he said, shattering my heart more.
“What about the guests that are in there waiting for you to propose to me so they can celebrate with us?” I asked him as more tears flowed down my cheeks.
I never saw this coming, not even for a bit. He was good at pretending, because since we were planning all of this, I never saw him act weird, not even for a second, and now he is doing this to me.
“I really don't care what the guest thinks; my reputation and what my family will think of me matter more to me than any of that,” he said.
“So please understand that there is no way I will get married to you, so it’s really over; just move on with your life,” he said, his voice loud and firm.
I went on my knees immediately and grabbed hold of his pants. I knew within me that this wasn't the right thing to do, but if it was going to save my relationship with him, then I would do it.
I have been rejected by so many of my boyfriends, whom I have come to love, and that left me shattered, so I don't want Luke on that list too.
“Please, Luke, don’t do this to me. We have been together for two years; don’t hurt me this way,” I said with tears pouring down my cheeks as rain now.
“There is someone else I need to be with and not you, so just accept it now, and stop pleading,” he said, and walked away from me.
“No, I can't accept this; it must be a joke or something,” I said to myself, walking to meet with him on the stage, where he was standing now.
“I know you were just testing me, and you didn't mean it,” I said, as I stood beside him now, taking his hands into mine, as we stood in front of the crowd now.
“Cassandra, I have told you already that I don't want to be with you anymore, so why are you bugging me?” He screamed before the crowd.
Everyone's gaze moved to me, and immediately I felt embarrassed. “Please, Luke, calm down; don’t do this,” I said in a whisper to him, but he frowned.
“Cassandra here isn't deserving of someone like me, so there is no way I'm going to get married to her,” he said to the crowd, unwrapping his hands from mine.
“Luke, please,” I said, tears pouring down my cheeks now.
“A lady who wants to force a relationship with a guy—what are the best words to describe her?” He asked the crowd, and they screamed.
“Desperate lady,”
“Please tell this desperate lady to leave me the hell alone,” he said, his voice echoing through the crowd, and immediately I felt so ashamed, broken, and devastated.
“Desperate lady, leave the young man alone; he doesn't want to marry you,” they screamed in a mocking manner, and immediately I felt my heart shatter into a thousand pieces.
I couldn't stand it anymore, so I ran off. How was I going to survive this heartbreak now? I felt totally devastated. As I run into my house with my heart heavy with grief.

CASSANDRA'S POV
Sitting on the sofa, my tears could not stop flowing down my cheeks, no matter how I tried to stop it.
“I can't believe Luke did this at this time of our lives. I mean, after all we have gone through together,” these words rang out of my mouth, as more tears flowed down my cheeks.
“I will never have anything to do with any man ever again after this,” I muttered to myself as I adjusted myself on the sofa again.
This was it; I would never get into any relationship ever again. I have had enough; I don't need more of this anymore.
“I just don't understand why my relationship always ends up in heartbreaks.” I paused to catch my breath before I continued.
“I guess the universe wants me to remain single for the rest of my life, then, so be it,” I murmured under my breath as more tears flowed down my cheeks.
If anyone ever told me that my relationship with Luke
