Chapter 1 "Hell, I'm Ready..."

Prologue

~ZENDAYA~

For the first time in my entire life, I cried. Watching the blood spluttering out of my parents' lips. We were late. My brother, Zaid and I had sensed the coldness in our spirits and knew right then that something was wrong.

We and our parents were connected spiritually, psychologically, you name it. Whenever they were distressed or in trouble we would feel it. The kind of coldness I had felt half an hour was the kind I had never felt, it was stronger because my mum and I had a deeper bond.

I didn't hesitate in alerting Zaid and with the help of my holographic ability, I was able to spot the scene where my parents were held down by the greatest enemy of our bloodline. The great dragon.

How he was able to ambush and overpower my parents— especially my mum— was what I couldn't decipher.

More coughing and spluttering of blood out of my mum's lips brought more tears to my eyes. She wheezed and buckled, struggling to hold my gaze but failing. I didn't hold the tears back from falling. They poured down in torrents as I washed my parents, gradually slipping through our fingers.

"Zen...Zen... Zendaya." My mum struggled to talk but the gurgling of blood couldn't let her. My heart tore just watching her struggling for air with the blood pouring out of the corners of her lips and soaking my blazer.

"Mum..." I sobbed, my gaze flicking to my Dad who Zaid cradled in his arms.

"Zendaya... Lis... Listen to me." She dragged my gaze back to her, her face slightly blurred as I gazed desperately at her with my misty eyes.

"You must find...him. He's...he can never be..." More blood gurgled out and it broke my heart.

I cradled her cheeks in my palms, more tears gushing out of my eyes.

"Mum, stop talking," I whispered softly. She slowly nodded as her shaky hands gripped my blazer.

"A dragon's heart is on his right, not his left, Zendaya." The first coherent sentence she made since we got here, but that caused more blood to splatter on my body.

"Is there anything you can do, Zen?" Zaid asked amid sobs. It wasn't surprising that he was also crying. The realization of our loss was too painful, even for our emotionless hearts.

I shook my head, my gaze darted towards my dad again. For a man with so much strength and vigor, lying down in his pool of blood and clutching my brother's black shirt like it was his lifeline as he gurgled crimson and wheezed, the sword of pain jabbed through me, my fingers curling into fists.

I shook my head. "Their hearts were almost dismembered, plus their veins. There's nothing I can do." The great dragon just knew what to do so there would be no way to revive them. The thought of that blazed the flames of rage that were ignited within me as soon as we stepped into this large field and met the almost lifeless bodies of my parents.

Zaid slumped against my Dad, wailing with a loud cry that shook the trees that surrounded the fields.

"Zen..." My mum called out to me again, my gaze snapping back to her immediately.

Her eyes were now wide. She only had a few heartbeats left.

"You must kill him. Avenge the near demise of our bloodline. Promise me."

I didn't hesitate to nod vigorously as I entwined my pinkie finger with my mum's shaky one. "I promise, mum."

"Zendaya..." My Dad called out weakly.

"Dad..." I glanced sharply at my dad again, more tears pouring down my face at the state of him— the state of them.

His eyes lazily closed and opened again as he struggled to hold my gaze.

"You are the dragon lord now..." He gurgled out more blood, gripping more tightly on Zaid's chest.

"Avenge our death... Save the Drago bloodline. Promise us..." He wheezed and buckled. "You and Zaid will live on and watch each... other's back."

I shook my head vigorously again, my hand stretching out to hold his.

"I promise Dad."

"I promise, Dad." Zaid coughed out.

Looking back at my mum, I saw a lazy smile on her face. "I know... you'll make me proud...as a dragon lord. You are stronger... I love you both."

With that last word, her hold on my blazer loosened as her eyes flipped closed, more blood gurgling through her mouth as her heartbeat stopped, just when Dad's heart gave out too.

"Nooo!!!!!!!" I cried out loudly, the thunder rumbling alongside my cry of agony. "Mum!!!!!" I called out, shaking her greatly as my tears poured out in torrents.

Large droplets of rain had started pouring down— signifying the demise of another dragon lord. Just like it did when my grandmother died, suffering the same fate as my parents at the hands of that monster.

The rain drenched our bodies as we lay against our parents sobbing endlessly, our hearts crying out for vengeance. The vengeance that was now resting on my athletic shoulders. The great dragon must die by my spear, that was a promise.

The rain that accompanied my mum and dad to the spirit world on the day their lives were snatched away from them, was also present on the day of their burial.

While my mum's younger sisters and my father's siblings cried and wailed as my mum's casket was lowered to the ground with my Dad's, amid the lightning and rumbling of thunder, my face remained expressionless and tear-free.

I uttered no words, safe for the occasional sighs of regret that escaped my lips at intervals. I was late. If I had sensed my mum's distress earlier, we would have arrived in time and stopped that crazy monster.

"Are you okay, Zen?" My brother's croaky voice sounded beside me. He hadn't gotten his voice after wailing that loudly a few days ago.

"Ready for revenge," I replied crisply, my gaze fixed ahead. My voice was perfectly okay, despite wailing louder than him, thanks to my powers and abilities.

From my sharp peripheral vision, I saw him nod. "Good. Because we have the perfect revenge plan for you."

At his words, I turned sharply and my gaze fell on the envelope he was holding. It bore the seal of the Citadel Of The Gifted And Special Breeds— a college that housed young adults with special abilities and powers.

My brows furrowed. "What does that have to do with anything?"

He managed a small smile, his puffy eyes visible.

"Because my sources tell me that he's hiding out in the Citadel Of The Gifted And Special Breeds." A smirk tugged on the corners of my lips as the realization dawned on me.

"This is your admission to the Citadel Of The Gifted And Special Breeds, sis. Are you ready?" His gaze was narrowed and intent.

A small smile crept across my cheeks as I held his gaze. "Hell, I'm ready.”

Chapter 2 Doing Something Different...

~ZENDAYA~

I thought I was stronger. That my cold stone heart could handle the death of my parents. I mean, I didn't even cry on the day of the funeral, right?

But here I was, in a bar on the outskirt of Oaks City— where Zaid and I relocated to so we could be closer to the Citadel Of The Gifted And Special Breeds which I would be moving to in two days— jugging a glass of whiskey, the ice clinking from side to side, as my mind drifted down the memory lane.

To the last day my mum and I trained before her demise.

She was clad in a sports bra and leather pants— just like I was— hitting furiously on the punching bag while I did the same. Occasionally we would exchange glances and smirks before resuming.

It was after the training that she let me in on the secret behind the recent war between the great dragon and the dragon lords.

"Dragonlords and the great dragon were best friends from decades ago. The dragon was always loyal to the dragon lords, followi
