Then my whole world came crashing down when I learned the truth about what he’d done - about why I was now an orphan. This is where my story starts but as I learn more about him, I find myself not being able to live without him. I just have to learn to keep my mouth shut so that he doesn’t kill me for not being ‘subservient’. I’m totally going to die… Aidan: I’m a vampire. Not only that, I’m the current King of vampires. I have done many things over the centuries that I should probably regret. I should probably regret falling in love with a human, but I don’t. Being the reason she’s on her knees with a tear sliding down her cheek though? That’s something I do regret.
Chapter 1 - Breaking a Bond
The King
And there it was. I didn't normally feel emotional pain but the pain I suddenly felt in my chest was excruciating - that's why I often blocked my emotions. But seeing her hurt…nothing could prepare me for that. As I watched the tear slowly roll down her cheek, I wanted to cut my own heart out. I opened and closed my mouth a few times, trying to find the words to fix everything. When she fell to her knees with a broken sob, I took a step towards her.
‘Don't,’ she pleaded.
‘Sofia-‘ I stopped when Seth moved between us and put a hand firmly on my chest.
‘You should leave,’ he said, ice dripping from his voice.
I shoved him aside, his body slamming into the wall and took another step towards her, freezing when she looked up at me. Her eyes were full of pain and hatred.
‘Why?’ she begged.
‘I can explain.’
Seth was back in front of me, his gun pressing into my chest. ‘You need to leave. Now.’
Looking into his eyes, I held them, letting mine grow darker. ‘If you point a gun at me, you better be brave enough to pull the trigger,’ I snarled.
He blinked a few times and sighed, lowering it.
Snatching it, I took the clip out and emptied the wooden bullets onto the floor. ‘Seriously? You, of all people, Seth. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't rip your heart out.’
Seth lowered his head and licked his lips, letting out a sigh. ‘You told me to keep her safe. Right now, she sees you as a threat.’
Sofia looked up at Seth through her tears. ‘What?’
He swallowed. ‘I'm sorry, Sofia. I truly am.’
Sobbing, she put her hand over her mouth, her eyes meeting my own. ‘Is anything about my life true? Anything?’
‘Some of it,’ I told her, swallowing back the remorse I was feeling for causing her so much pain. Instead I let some of my anger bubble to the surface – I would kill whomever betrayed me by telling her.
‘I hate you,’ she whispered.
Checking my temper, I ran my tongue over my top teeth. ‘Leave us,’ I told the room. No one moved. ‘Anyone still here in five seconds will lose their head!’ Three seconds later, the door closed after everyone had left the room. Going to her, I gripped the tops of her arms and hauled her to her feet.
‘Let go of me!’
Tightening my grip, I shook her gently. ‘Listen to me.’
‘Go to hell!’
‘You need to calm down and listen to what I have to say. I can and will explain everything-‘
‘Nothing you say will change anything. I will hate you forever.’
‘I love you! I did it all for you! All of it!’
‘I hate you!’
Letting go of her I shook my head, not expecting the slap she gave me. Turning my head slowly to look at her, I felt my jaw tighten. She must have seen it because she took a few quick steps backwards.
‘I never want to see you again.’
‘Be careful what you wish for, sweetheart,’ I warned her.
‘I am not your sweetheart!’
‘Yes! Yes, you are!’
‘You're a murderer and a monster!’
‘Please, just listen to what I have to say.’
‘My name is Sofia DiMarco-‘
‘Don't,’ I told her. ‘Don't do it.’
‘Why?! You have taken everything from me!’ she screamed as the tears kept falling. ‘My name is Sofia DiMarco and I-‘
Rushing to her, I put my hand over her mouth, holding her to me and grunting as she kneed me in the groin. Pushing her against the wall, I pinned her with my body. ‘I will grant you anything, anything in the world if you promise not to finish that sentence.’
She glared at me and if looks could kill, I would be one dead son of a b*tch.
‘Promise me, Sofia.’ When she nodded, I took my hand away.
‘I break my bond and my vow.’
It had been centuries since I’d felt a tear fall down my cheek. It was a strange sensation. ‘So be it. Seth will take you wherever you wish to go.’ Going to the door, I looked at her to see her slowly slide down the wall. ‘You have no idea what you've done.’ Leaving the room, I looked at Seth. ‘Take her wherever she wants to go. Do not tell anyone, even me. Understood?’
He nodded.
‘Your highness,’ Melody said. ‘It’s not safe-‘
‘You're telling the wrong person.’
‘Let me speak to her.’
‘She's broken the bond.’ When they all stared at me with open mouths, I looked at Seth. ‘Not even me. Even if I threaten to torture you.’
He smirked at me. ‘Trust me, sir, if you were torturing me, it'd be my pleasure not to tell you.’
Nodding, I walked out the front door.
Chapter 2 - A New Home
Sofia
Looking up at Seth as he came in, I tried to wipe at some of the tears on my face, but they wouldn’t stop falling. ‘Why?’ I choked.
He walked over to me and squatted in front of me, giving me a gentle half smile. ‘He rarely does drastic things like that without good reason, Sofia.’
‘He killed my parents! My mum and dad, Seth! He killed my mum and dad!’
‘Yes. He did. But-‘
‘I don’t want to hear it.’ Looking around the office, I sniffed. ‘So, what is this place?’
‘His office.’
Sliding my eyes to his, I raised my eyebrows. ‘He lives here?’
‘Sometimes. Come on.’
‘What?’ I asked, confused.
‘I need to get you up and out.’ Standing, he offered me his hand.
Taking it, I let him help me up. ‘Why? Where are we going?’
‘I’m taking you home to pack some things.’
‘What? There is no way I’m going to be coming here with him!’
Shaking his head, he gently ran
