Açıklama

To save her brother from a lethal debt, brilliant forensic accountant Clara Vance agrees to a one-year contractual marriage with Leonardo Moretti—Chicago’s most feared mafia Don. Clara believes Leo is a heartless monster who destroyed her family’s business. Leo views Clara as a temporary pawn to project stability during a turbulent power transition. Their forced arrangement takes a dangerous turn when Clara uses her sharp eye for numbers to audit the syndicate's ledgers. Instead of routine accounting, she uncovers millions in stolen funds leaked to a rogue mercenary group—and proof that Leo’s own father was murdered by an insider. Realizing Clara is the only person smart enough to trace the truth, Leo appoints her as his private auditor, pulling her deep into his dangerous world. As gunfire replaces financial strategy and enemy hitmen close in, the boundary between cold business and lethal attraction begins to blur. With a traitor watching their every move from within the inner circle, Clara and Leo must learn to trust each other before their enemies burn the Moretti empire to the ground—and take them down with it.

Ledger and the Gun

The basement of the Moretti estate didn’t smell like concrete or damp stone. It smelled like expensive leather, polished steel, and rich mahogany. It was a boardroom built three floors beneath the earth.

Clara Vance sat at the end of a long mahogany table, her back rigid, her fingers pressed flat against the glossy wood to hide their trembling.

Across from her sat Leonardo Moretti.

At twenty-nine, he looked less like the notorious mob boss who had taken over Chicago’s underbelly six months ago and more like a high-stakes CEO—if CEOs wore tailored charcoal suits over shoulders built for war and carried an unspoken promise of violence in their eyes. His jaw was sharp, shadowed by a faint trace of stubble, and his cold grey eyes hadn't left Clara's face since she was escorted down the stairs.

Between them lay a single Manila folder.

"Your brother is an idiot, Miss Vance," Leo said. His voice was smooth, deep, and completely devoid of warmth.

Clara swallowed hard, forcing her gaze to remain locked on his. "Julian made a mistake."

"Julian racked up two million dollars in gambling debt at my underground tables," Leo corrected, leaning back in his leather chair. He laced his long fingers together. "And when he couldn't pay, he tried to cover it by attempting to skim off our shell accounts. My accounts."

"He’s twenty-two," Clara said, her voice tighter than she wanted it to be. "He didn't realize who he was stealing from."

"Ignorance isn't an excuse in my line of work. It's a mortality risk." Leo glanced at the guard standing silently by the heavy iron door. "My enforcers wanted to drop him in the lake three days ago."

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she didn't flinch. She had spent five years earning her CPA and building a reputation as one of the sharpest forensic accountants in the city. She dealt in facts. In numbers. Numbers didn't lie, and right now, she had to treat this dangerous man like the most volatile asset in the world.

"You didn't let them," Clara pointed out. "If Julian were already dead, I wouldn't be sitting in this chair. You want something from me."

A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Leo’s lips. "Smart girl."

He slid the Manila folder across the polished table. It stopped inches from Clara’s hands.

"Open it," he commanded softly.

Clara pulled the folder toward her and flipped it open. Inside was a dense printout of financial statements, corporate registry numbers, and tax filings for Moretti Holdings—the legal umbrella company Leo used to funnel his family’s massive wealth into legitimate real estate.

Her eyes scanned the columns automatically. Within ten seconds, her eyebrows knitted together.

"These books are a disaster," Clara blurted out before she could filter herself. "Your legal entities are bleeding cash through dummy corporations, and your tax filings are practically screaming for a federal audit. Whoever set this structure up was either completely incompetent or actively trying to get you indicted."

Leo didn't look angry. Instead, a gleam of calculated interest entered his dark eyes.

"My father died six months ago," Leo said, his tone dropping an octave. "Since I took over, the federal government has been breathing down our necks. Furthermore, rival families think I'm weak because our legal fronts are unstable. I need to project complete, unshakeable legitimacy to the public and the board of directors."

"And what does that have to do with my brother's debt?"

"You are going to fix my books," Leo said. "And to make sure you don't run to the FBI with what you see inside my accounts, you are going to sign the document on the last page of that folder."

Clara flipped to the final page. Her breath hitched in her throat.

It wasn't an NDA. It wasn't an employment contract.

It was a Marriage Certificate.

"Is this a joke?" Clara stared at him, her pulse racing. "You want me to marry you?"

"A contractual marriage," Leo clarified, leaning forward. The light caught the sharp angle of his cheekbones. "One year. Publicly, you will be my devoted, highly accomplished wife—a brilliant financial mind from a respectable family, helping me legitimize the Moretti empire. Privately, you will audit every single dollar moving through my legal accounts and plug the leaks."

"And Julian's debt?"

"The moment you sign, his debt is forgiven, and he walks away unharmed," Leo replied calmly. "Refuse, and my enforcers finish what they started three days ago. And after they're done with him, they'll turn their attention to you."

The threat hung heavy in the air, cold and absolute.

Clara looked down at the paper. Her mind raced, searching for an exit, a loophole, a legal shield. But in Leonardo Moretti’s world, the law didn't exist. There was only power, and right now, he held all of it.

One year, she told herself. One year to save Julian, fix the numbers, and get out.

"One year," Clara said, her voice remarkably steady. "After three hundred and sixty-five days, the contract ends. I get my freedom, and you leave my family alone forever."

"Agreed," Leo said.

Clara reached into her blazer pocket, pulled out her favorite silver Montblanc pen, and signed her name on the dotted line. The ink was dark and permanent.

She slid the folder back to him. "Congratulations, Don Moretti. You just bought yourself an auditor."

Leo picked up the document, reviewing her neat signature with a subtle nod. He stood up, towering over the table, buttoning his suit jacket with effortless grace.

"Welcome to the family, Clara," he said softly. "Guard, take Mrs. Moretti to the master suite."

Clara stood up, her brow furrowed. "The master suite? We agreed this was a business arrangement. I expect my own room."

"Publicly, we are newlyweds," Leo said, stepping around the table until he was standing uncomfortably close to her. She could smell his cologne—sandalwood and faint tobacco. "My estate is full of eyes, Clara. Servants, bodyguards, and men loyal to rival families. If we sleep in separate bedrooms, the rumor starts that our marriage is a sham. If that rumor starts, my enemies see weakness."

He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his hand coming up to gently rest against the side of her neck. His thumb lightly traced her racing pulse point.

"From this moment on, you belong to me," he whispered, sending a shiver straight down her spine. "In public, and behind closed doors."

Before Clara could push him away, the heavy iron door of the basement room slammed open.

A high-ranking Moretti enforcer burst inside, his face pale and breathing heavily.

"Don Leonardo," the enforcer gasped, reaching for the side arm at his hip. "We have a problem. The federal task force just hit our downtown docks—and someone inside our circle leaked the encrypted coordinates."

Leo’s head snapped toward the guard, his eyes darkening into pure rage. But as he turned, Clara’s gaze drifted back to the open financial folder still resting on the table.

Her eyes caught a tiny, obscure transaction code listed under the dock operations log—a code she recognized instantly from her late father’s private financial journals years ago.

Clara froze. The leak wasn't just happening now. It had started years ago... with her own family.

The Rules of Engagement

The air in the basement room instantly turned to ice.

Leo’s body went taut as a bowstring, his grey eyes locked onto his enforcer, Mario, who stood breathless in the doorway. The suave, dangerous businessman was gone in a heartbeat, replaced by a ruthless predator.

"Which docks?" Leo demanded, his voice dangerously low.

"Pier 4," Mario answered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Feds pulled up with three vans and a warrant signed twenty minutes ago. They knew the exact shipping container, Don. The one carrying the imported hardware."

'Hardware' was mob speak for untraceable firearms.

Clara’s mind raced as she stared at the open file on the table. Pier 4 was registered under Vance Logistics—the company her father had run before his bankruptcy and sudden, fatal heart attack three years ago. The transaction code she had just spotted—VL-990-X—was a ghost routing code her father used to keep on a private USB drive at home.
