Sinopse

Everyone in the Silvercrest Pack knew there was something wrong with Elara Vale. At twenty-three, she had never shifted, never heard the voice of her wolf, and never possessed the strength expected of a werewolf. She had learned to live with the whispers and the pity because there was one thing she had always believed was certain: Adrian Blackthorn, the future Alpha of Silvercrest, was her mate. On the night Adrian is supposed to claim her as his Luna, Elara walks into the ceremony expecting her life to finally begin. Instead, Adrian arrives with her half-sister on his arm and rejects Elara in front of the entire pack. Humiliated and heartbroken, she has a choice: beg the man fate chose for her to reconsider, or walk away with the only thing he hasn't taken from her—her dignity. Elara accepts his rejection. She has no idea that breaking the mate bond will also break the seal that has kept her true nature hidden for twenty-three years. For the first time in her life, Elara hears her wolf. Around her, other wolves begin to bow without understanding why. Hundreds of miles away, Kael Draven feels it too. The feared Alpha King has spent his entire life believing he was one of the rare wolves born without a destined mate. Then a bond he never knew existed suddenly comes alive, leading him straight to the woman another Alpha was foolish enough to reject. Kael may be a King, and fate may insist that Elara belongs beside him, but she has already learned what happens when she allows an Alpha to decide her worth. If Kael Draven wants her, being her mate won't be enough. He will have to earn her.

Chapter 1 - The Night He Chose My Sister

I knew Adrian was going to reject me three minutes before he did it. Not because he warned me. Adrian Blackthorn had barely spoken to me all evening. Not because anyone in the crowded ceremonial hall had the courage to tell me what was about to happen either. I knew because my sister was wearing my mother's earrings.

They were small silver crescents, almost hidden beneath Serena's dark hair, and I stared at them from across the hall while someone beside me laughed too loudly at something I didn't hear. My mother had left those earrings to me. Serena knew that. More importantly, Adrian knew it too.

I looked away from her and found him standing near his father at the other end of the hall. He was dressed in black, the silver crest of our pack pinned above his heart. Tonight was the ceremony that would officially begin his transition from future Alpha to leader of Silvercrest, and everyone who mattered was there to witness it. He should have looked nervous. Instead, Adrian looked perfectly calm.

Serena stood beside him. Too close. Her fingers rested lightly against his arm, and something cold settled in my stomach.

"Elara?"

I turned to find Mara watching me. She was one of the few people in Silvercrest who still spoke to me normally, without lowering her voice as though my condition might somehow be contagious.

"What?"

"You're going to break that glass."

I looked down. The stem was trapped so tightly between my fingers that my knuckles had turned white. I forced myself to loosen my grip.

"I'm fine."

Mara followed my gaze across the room. I saw the exact moment she noticed Serena. "Why is your sister standing with Adrian?"

"I don't know."

It was a lie. Somewhere inside me, I already knew. I simply wasn't ready to admit it.

Around us, the hall continued filling with members of Silvercrest Pack. The building had stood for more than two hundred years, from a time when Alphas settled most disputes with claws rather than council meetings. Dark wooden beams crossed the high ceiling, and the tall windows had been left open to the forest, allowing the scent of pine and wet earth to mix with perfume, candles and too many bodies gathered in one place.

I had imagined this night since I was seventeen. Adrian would stand before the pack, take my hand and acknowledge me publicly as his mate. After years of whispers, pity and poorly concealed contempt, I would finally become the future Luna of Silvercrest. For once, nobody would look at me and see the girl who had failed to become a wolf.

Most wolves shifted for the first time between sixteen and eighteen. My eighteenth birthday came and went without so much as a voice inside my head. Nineteen brought nothing. By twenty, the healers had stopped telling my father to be patient. By twenty-one, people had stopped pretending they weren't talking about me.

Wolfless. Broken. Human.

The last one wasn't technically true, but sometimes I thought they would have respected me more if it had been.

Adrian had defended me in the beginning. I still remembered finding him outside the training grounds when we were seventeen, standing between me and three boys who thought making wolf noises whenever I passed them was funny.

"She'll shift when she's ready," he had told them.

I had loved him for that. Perhaps that had been my first mistake. My second had been believing he would keep defending me forever.

The room suddenly fell silent.

Alpha Blackthorn had stepped onto the raised platform at the front of the hall. "Silvercrest."

One word was enough. Every conversation stopped.

My heart began beating harder. Mara touched my arm and smiled at me, but there was uncertainty behind it now.

"This is it."

I nodded. "This is it."

Alpha Blackthorn spoke about tradition, responsibility and the future of the pack. I heard almost none of it because I couldn't stop watching Adrian. He still hadn't looked at me.

Then his father smiled at the crowd. "My son has one more announcement to make tonight."

A murmur swept through the hall.

Mara squeezed my hand, and for one impossible second, I convinced myself that I had imagined everything. Serena's hand on Adrian's arm. My mother's earrings. The unanswered messages over the past few weeks. The excuses every time I asked Adrian why he hadn't come to see me.

Maybe there was an explanation. Maybe he would finally look at me and smile. Maybe he would call my name.

"Serena."

He called hers instead.

My sister walked toward him.

The crowd parted for her as though everyone except me already knew where she belonged. Serena was beautiful; there was no point pretending otherwise. She had inherited her mother's golden-brown eyes and the kind of confidence that came from never entering a room wondering whether she deserved to be there.

When she reached Adrian, he held out his hand.

She took it.

Someone behind me whispered, "Oh."

Just that one word.

It hurt more than laughter would have.

Mara moved closer. "Elara, let's go."

"No."

"Please. You don't need to stand here for this."

"I'm not leaving."

Across the hall, Serena finally looked at me. There was guilt in her eyes for perhaps half a second. Then she lifted her chin, and I understood something I wished I hadn't.

This wasn't something that had happened tonight. This had been happening while I wasn't looking.

"Adrian," Alpha Blackthorn said quietly.

There was a warning in his father's voice. Adrian ignored it and looked toward me at last.

Hundreds of people followed his gaze.

Suddenly I became aware of everything. My dress. My hair. The silver bracelet Adrian had given me two years ago. The fact that I had spent almost an hour deciding which shoes he would like best. Every stupid little detail of a night I had believed would change my life for the better.

I wanted to disappear.

Instead, I put my glass down.

"Elara."

My name sounded unfamiliar in his mouth.

"I wanted to tell you before tonight."

I stared at him. He had my number. He knew where I lived. Apparently neither had been sufficient.

"But I couldn't," he continued.

"Couldn't?"

Adrian's jaw tightened. "This isn't easy for me."

I almost laughed.

My mate was standing beside my sister in front of the entire pack, and somehow this was difficult for him.

"What isn't easy?"

He hesitated. Serena touched his arm, and that tiny gesture answered my question before he did.

Adrian inhaled. "Silvercrest needs a strong Luna."

There it was. Not the rejection. Something worse. The reason.

The thing everyone had been thinking for years.

I felt Mara stiffen beside me, but I didn't move. "And I'm not one."

"That's not what I said."

"You didn't have to."

"Elara—"

"No. Finish."

His eyes narrowed slightly. Adrian had never liked being interrupted. Perhaps he had expected tears tonight. Perhaps he had rehearsed this conversation with a version of me who begged him not to leave.

I wondered if Serena had helped him practice.

"I care about you," he said.

That almost broke me. Not because I believed him, but because once I would have.

"But caring isn't enough."

Behind him stood my sister. In front of me stood the man I had spent years believing would become my husband. The two people who had apparently decided my future without considering that I might want a vote.

I looked directly at Serena. "How long?"

Her lips parted. "Elara—"

"How long?"

Adrian answered for her. "That's not important."

Which meant long enough.

Something inside my chest seemed to crack. For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my heart. Then something changed.

A strange pressure I hadn't known existed suddenly disappeared.

I caught my breath and pressed one hand against my chest.

Adrian noticed. His expression shifted, uncertainty appearing for the first time that evening.

I had heard other wolves describe the mate bond. A thread. A pull. A second heartbeat connecting two souls. I had never experienced any of those things and had assumed it was another consequence of not having a wolf.

But standing there, looking at Adrian, I suddenly understood that something had always been there.

Quiet. Buried so deeply inside me that I had mistaken it for part of myself.

And now it was afraid.

"Elara?" Mara whispered.

I couldn't answer.

Heat moved beneath my skin. It began near my heart and spread outward so quickly that for a moment I thought I was going to faint. Then it vanished.

Adrian took a step toward me. "I'm sorry."

I looked at the man I had spent six years believing would be my future. He didn't look cruel. That would have been easier.

He looked certain.

He genuinely believed he was making the right choice.

Maybe that was worse.

Adrian straightened, and the boy I had loved disappeared behind the future Alpha Silvercrest expected him to become. When he spoke again, his voice carried throughout the ceremonial hall.

Every wolf heard him.

Every person who had ever whispered that I wasn't good enough was there to witness it.

"Elara Vale."

Mara's fingers closed around mine.

Serena lowered her eyes.

I didn't.

I looked directly at Adrian as he gave me the words that destroyed the future I had spent years believing was mine.

"Elara Vale, I reject you as my mate."

Chapter 2 - I Accept

For a few seconds after Adrian spoke, nobody moved.

The words seemed to hang in the air between us, too sharp to disappear and too final to misunderstand.

"Elara Vale, I reject you as my mate."

I had imagined hearing those words before. Every wolfless girl in a pack probably did at some point, even if she never admitted it. Rejection stories traveled quickly. They became warnings whispered between mothers and daughters, gossip repeated at training grounds, tragedies people discussed with sympathy as long as they weren't happening to them.

But imagination had not prepared me for the silence afterward.

It was the kind of silence that belonged to funerals.

Adrian was still standing several feet away, his shoulders straight, his expression controlled. Serena stood behind him now, one hand curled against the fabric of her dress. Alpha Blackthorn had gone completely still on the platform.

Everyone was waiting for me.

Maybe they expected me t
