Annotation
"The Final City," is a post-apocalyptic novel set in a world where day and night have lost their traditional meanings due to the perpetual thick clouds that obscure the sky. The story follows Feren, a seasoned survivor navigating through a desolate world plagued by zombies and energy-sucking monsters. The remnants of humanity are scattered in small, fortified towns, trying to eke out an existence amidst the ruins of a once-thriving civilization. The novel begins with Feren reflecting on the state of the world and his recent escapades. He is a pragmatic and resourceful individual, unburdened by the moral complexities that governed the old world. His primary focus is survival and completing tasks that ensure his continued existence. Feren’s demeanor is illustrated through his nonchalant attitude towards a girl he spent the night with, showing his detachment from emotional entanglements. The plot intensifies when Feren receives a report from a scavenger team that encountered numerous zombies and discovered traces of energy-sucking monsters. This news prompts Feren to investigate further, leading him to a dilapidated city. Here, he encounters a group of zombies, which he skillfully dispatches with his scalpel, a testament to his combat prowess and cold efficiency. As the story progresses, Feren meets the scavenger team, including a young girl named Beth who possesses healing abilities—a rare and valuable trait in this world. The team is in a dire situation, having lost many members to the energy-sucking monsters. They are holed up in a tunnel, trying to survive. Feren steps in, eliminating the threat with surgical precision, saving the remaining team members. The narrative delves deeper into the world-building, revealing the existence of a mysterious "network system" that grants survivors abilities akin to magic or superpowers. This system is a crucial aspect of the post-apocalyptic society, determining the hierarchy and capabilities of individuals. Feren’s abilities are showcased as superior, hinting at a past filled with significant challenges and growth. Feren’s journey leads him to the Ninth District, the largest and most fortified gathering place in the wasteland, governed by the Blackstone Group. The district is preparing for an imminent electromagnetic storm, a natural disaster that threatens the fragile stability of their world. The Ninth District’s defenses and the people's reactions to the storm underscore the constant peril they live in.
Chapter 1
The rain is still falling.
Feren looked up at the sky. For this world, day and night no longer had any meaning. Even during the day, the thick clouds never showed any sign of dispersing. Whenever people looked up, they could only see the dark clouds. As for the azure sky, the warm sun, the bright full moon and the countless stars, they had long since disappeared from people's memories. The only way for people to see these things was through the remaining images from before the "Great Cataclysm".
Of course, this no longer makes sense to them.
The only way people now judge day and night is that it is slightly brighter outside during the day, while it is pitch dark at night. Other than that, there is no difference between the two.
Last night's entertainment was quite good.
Thinking of the girl who was sleeping soundly in bed at this moment, a smile appeared on the corner of Fellow's mouth. Last night was a very wonderful night for him. The other party's reaction was very immature, even a little shy. From the brief contact, Fellow could sense that she was not a "fallen woman" who sold her body for a living, and she might even be someone's fiancée or lover. But it didn't matter to Fellow, at least he had a good time last night, and that was enough. As for whether the other party would cause any trouble because of this, it was not something he needed to worry about.
Well, next, it's time to get down to business.
Thinking of this, Fearon took out a green, baseball-sized data cube from his pocket and pressed it gently. The next moment, the cube unlocked, and lines of information appeared in front of him. At the same time, a series of voices rang in Fearon's ears.
"This is the scavenger team. We are investigating area C. We have found traces of zombies. It looks like there may be more of them than we thought."
"This is the scavenger team. We found hundreds of zombies and they attacked us. Fortunately, these d*mn things are no match for us. But we also had someone sacrifice Hank. I'm sorry I can't bring his body back. He was caught by a group of zombies and then we burned him. Through observation, we found that there is more than just one group of zombies here. We will continue to track them."
"This is the scavenger team. We have eliminated three groups of zombies. Their numbers are getting smaller and smaller, and they should not pose a threat to the town. But just now, we found traces of energy-sucking monsters. We don't know if it's a lone energy-sucking monster or a group of them, but in any case, this is not good news. I have sent people to investigate and see if they can find any clues."
"D*mn it, this is the scavenger team, and none of the people I sent out have come back. This has verified my guess, and I'm afraid we're going to be in big trouble. We have now reached the edge of the safe zone. Although I really want to move on and find those d*mn energy-sucking monsters, it's too dangerous to rush into the black hole area without preparation. I'm already planning to evacuate, and the electromagnetic storm is coming soon. I suggest that the town should strengthen its defenses. Hey, what is that? Everyone, get ready for a fight. D*mn it."
This is the last communication.
"It seems that they are in big trouble."
Hearing this, Feren smiled and spoke. He glanced at the mark on the map, which marked their last location and position. After finally confirming the target location, Feren picked up the wide-brimmed hat at hand and put it on, then pushed open the door in front of him. Soon, violent raindrops mixed with cold wind rushed towards him, completely enveloping his body.
Everything has its own way of survival.
Humans have always believed that they are the masters of the earth. They have taken everything from the earth and then destroyed everything. They even think that they will completely destroy the world. But the fact proves that this idea is nonsense. The earth will tell humans with its actual actions that no matter how serious the destruction is, it is only humans who are destroyed and die. The earth is still the earth. Without humans, other species can still survive. Just like in the ancient dinosaur era, no matter how advanced the civilization is, in the eyes of the earth itself, there is no essential difference between humans and dinosaurs.
This is especially true when standing on the edge of the ruins and looking at the city in front of you.
"These guys really ran to a troublesome place."
Looking at the ruins of the city not far away, Feren's smile did not change at all. He raised his head and looked at an off-road vehicle not far away. It had crashed into the concrete pillar in front of him. There was no blood on it. The heavy rain had washed everything clean. Only a broken leg dangled outside the door, showing its last presence to the passing visitors. Of course, this leg might not last long. Although the zombies had no interest in it, it was still a very good food for the mutant beasts and some vagrants.
"Roar"
Amid the sound of rain, there was a faint roar like that of a wild beast. Dark shadows gradually emerged from the rain curtain. They were dressed in rags, and their bodies were covered with rotten flesh. In their dark eye sockets, there was a strange scarlet glow, containing a desire to kill like a flame.
Looking at the zombies slowly appearing from all directions, Furen was not nervous at all. On the contrary, he just stood there quietly, carefully looking at the monsters that were getting closer and closer.
When the zombies were only a few dozen meters away from Furen, they heard a series of roars, and the next moment, the monsters that were originally slow and leisurely suddenly exploded, like a group of nimble cheetahs rushing towards the prey in front of them at a rapid speed. They stretched out their sharp claws and tried to grab the living being in front of them, and completely tear his body apart, devour his flesh and blood, and let him taste the same pain as themselves.
But the next moment, their bodies lost the momentum to move forward and fell down.
The flashing cold light passed through their fingers, elbows, shoulders, and necks without stopping. The zombies' stiff, solid limbs were like tofu in front of this small scalpel, and were easily cut, broken, and shattered. The sharp blade cut the throat, cut off the limbs, and pierced the brain. In just a moment, the roar disappeared, and the rain curtain once again covered everything. Furen stood quietly in the same place, motionless. At his feet, the zombies that attacked him just now had turned into a pile of meat.
"Fifteen, it seems like they slipped through the net."
Watching the blood on the scalpel being washed away by the rain, Fearon moved his fingers slightly, and the next moment, the shiny and sharp scalpel disappeared. He reached out again and lowered the brim of his hat.
"Delin, have you found where they went?"
Yes Master.
As Ferran asked, a soft, calm voice emerged in Ferran's mind.
They abandoned their supplies and vehicles and retreated into the tunnel. It seems these people were not that stupid.
Hearing this, Feren nodded slightly, then he leaped down from above, landing on the ground silently like a ghost. Then, without even looking at the abandoned containers on both sides, Feren leisurely walked into the tunnel in front of him.
The tunnel was not completely dark. On both sides of the wall, dim lights kept flickering. The disaster changed everything in this world, even these electronic facilities. They no longer needed wires or other energy transmission systems to supply energy. As long as they were in the network energy coverage area, any electronic device could be used at will.
Once, they were a sign of civilization, but now, they have become omens and warnings of life and death.
The storm is coming.
Looking at the flickering wall lamp, Feren didn't say much. He just narrowed his eyes and looked carefully at the tunnel in front of him. It was obvious that those unlucky guys had a fierce exchange of fire here. Perhaps their original intention was to avoid the storm and destroy the enemy at the same time. This can be seen from the hastily built shelter with wooden boxes and tires in front of Feren. But for some reason, they gave up the decision to defend here and fled to the depths of the tunnel.
Thinking of this, Feren cast his eyes on the two bodies not far away. Judging from their clothes, they were obviously members of that team. Their weapons were still in their hands, and their faces showed expressions of fear and despair. However, their bodies were strangely skinny. It was not because of malnutrition caused by long-term hunger, but because they were completely skin and bones, as if all other parts except the outermost skin and bones had been drained. Seeing this scene, Feren's eyes flashed with a hint of coldness.
"It seems that they are really unlucky."
They are energy-sucking monsters, and there are more than one. Master, what do you think the chances are that they are still alive today?
"I think"
Having said this, Feren suddenly stopped talking, then he closed his eyes, listened for a moment, then opened his eyes again and showed a calm and elegant smile.
"I think the chance of their survival is 100 percent."
“Hahahahahahahaha”
Leaning against the solid iron door, holding the assault rifle in his arms, the young man's face was extremely pale, but even so, he still forced himself to calm down and listened to the sounds coming from the tunnel. Beside him, several other fully armed companions also had serious faces at this moment, holding guns in their hands and watching the surroundings vigilantly.
"Beth, how is the captain?"
The young man asked in a low voice while carefully looking outside through the small hole in the iron door. Not far behind him, a girl was trying to treat the wound of a man covered in blood. However, the way the girl treated the wound was different from what ordinary people thought. She stretched out her hand and placed it on the man's bloody wound. Then a faint green light was seen. The next moment, the wound that had lost blood was gradually healed under the cover of this green light. This magical scene did not attract the attention of others at all. After the girl withdrew her hand, her face became a little paler.
"The captain's bleeding has stopped, but I don't have a better way. If I want to save him, I have to take him back to town. Only there can he receive better treatment. This is all I can do."
Beth looked at the man in front of her with a sad face.
"I'm sorry, Captain. It's all my fault. If you hadn't saved me, you wouldn't have..."
"Hehe, stop crying, silly child"
Hearing the girl's crying, the man opened his eyes and forced a smile. He raised his right hand and stroked the girl's little head.
"You are the only one in this town who has awakened the authority of the healing field. As long as you are alive, our chances of survival will be higher. If you die here, it will only be a matter of time before we turn into a pile of rotten meat. At least now, I am still alive, right?"
"But my authority is only level one."
At this point, Beth bit her lip unwillingly. She only had the lowest level of network authority, and her healing ability was relatively weak. For now, being able to stop the bleeding from the wound was the limit of what she could do within her authority.
After the "Great Disaster", all the people who survived have abilities similar to those in the "System Text". They found that they all had an extra "network system" in their brains. Through this "network system", these people can exchange information and trade as if they were on the Internet. In the world after the Great Disaster, telephones and messaging devices have no meaning, because anyone can stand in front of each other and add each other as friends if they want. Then, even if they are thousands of miles apart, they can still contact each other. It's as if they are not in a real world, but in a virtual network world.
Some of them will awaken the system permissions and gain powers similar to magic or super powers in novels. The girl in front of him is obviously one of these lucky ones.
"Your authority will always be upgraded. Don't be impatient. You are still young. Take your time. I was thirty years old before I got level one authority, and now I have only been upgraded to level three. You are less than twenty years old. As long as you can go back alive, you will definitely be able to reach level three faster than me. So, don't cry and let others see it. It will have a bad impact."
Although the man's joke was poor, the girl still nodded, then reached out and wiped away the tears from her eyes. At this moment, the young man who was hiding in front of the door and looking out suddenly spoke in a low voice.
"Be careful, something is wrong"
Hearing his words, the people who were originally slightly relaxed suddenly tensed up. They raised their weapons and looked around vigilantly. Even the crying girl just now picked up the pistol beside her and took aim and shot in a well-trained manner. This is the mark given to them by this era. In this era, survival or death is no longer just a simple philosophical proposition. Fighting is also a part of their lives.
"boom"
However, before everyone was ready, suddenly, accompanied by a loud noise, the heavy iron door suddenly caved inwards, and then fell down with a bang. The young man hiding behind the iron door didn't even have time to react, but screamed and was crushed under the falling iron door. With a "pop", the flesh and blood under the heavy pressure suddenly sprayed and tore, smearing a shocking red on the ground.
"No----"
Seeing this scene, the others' eyes suddenly turned red. They raised their guns and pulled the trigger. With a series of gunshots, countless ammunition flew towards the door. Such firepower was enough to eliminate most of the invaders.
Chapter 2
But alas, that’s not all.
"Roar"
The smoke cleared, and a huge, dark figure appeared in front of everyone. It was completely black, and two arms that were almost as long as its body grabbed the door frame. Its narrow, jackal-like head was buried deep inside, and its scarlet eyes emitted a strange light as it stared at its prey. Sticky saliva dripped from the gaps between its sharp and hard teeth, emitting a disgusting stench. The previous round of bombardment, which was like a storm, did not cause any damage to the monster in front of them. There was not even a trace of scar left on its rubber-like hard skin.
"D*mn it"
Looking at the monster in front of them, everyone's faces turned pale, and they didn't know what to do. Because what they were facing was the most terrifying monster in the world and also their biggest enemy.
But now, they are at their wits' end.
"Roar"
Looking at the prey in fr
