Chapter One — The Duke’s Captive

The rain came down in sheets, drowning the ashes of what had once been a kingdom.

Mud clung to the carriage wheels as they rolled slowly down the broken road. Around them, the world smelled of smoke and iron , the scent of victory for one side and ruin for the other.

Inside the carriage, Lady Seraphina Vale, last daughter of the fallen House of Vale, sat motionless. Her wrists were bound in silk, an insult disguised as courtesy. Her gown, once white, was smeared with dirt and the faint stain of blood.

The war had ended that morning. Her father, the king, had fallen at dawn. Her mother had taken her last breath beside him before the palace gates fell.

Now Seraphina rode into exile.

Outside, hooves struck the wet earth with the precision of a heartbeat. The soldiers of the conquering army rode in silence, their black armor gleaming faintly under the gray sky. And at their head , tall, masked, and silent, rode the man she would never forgive.

The Duke of Raelthorn.

Lucien Ashbourne. The Masked Duke. The man who had destroyed her world.

Through the small window of the carriage, she could see him riding alongside, his cloak dark as night, his mask of burnished steel hiding all but his eyes. Eyes that never turned toward her. Eyes that had watched her father die.

Her hands clenched tightly in her lap. Hatred burned so hot within her that it was almost a comfort. It was all she had left.

The carriage jolted as it struck a stone. Seraphina swayed, catching herself on the side. The guard riding beside the wheel glanced toward her, pity flickering briefly in his expression before he looked away.

Pity. She did not want it.

When they reached the end of the forest road, the land opened into a valley, and there it stood.

Ravenscar Manor.

Once a royal hunting lodge, now claimed by the Duke as his war prize. Its towers rose black against the sky, surrounded by mists that never seemed to lift. Ravens wheeled above its spires, their cries sharp as knives.

The carriage stopped before the gates. The Duke dismounted, his boots striking the cobblestones with calm, measured steps. He gave no orders; the gates opened for him as if the air itself obeyed his will.

The door of the carriage swung open. Seraphina did not move.

“Out,” came his voice, deep, steady, unreadable.

She lifted her chin. “You have taken my land, my family, and my name, Your Grace. You may command my body, but you will never command my will.”

For the first time, his gaze met hers. Through the narrow sl*t of the mask, she saw eyes the color of storm clouds, cold, distant, but not unfeeling.

“I have no interest in breaking your will,” he said. “Only in keeping you alive.”

“Alive?” Her laugh was hollow. “So you may parade me as your trophy?”

His jaw tightened. “Step down, my lady. Before I lose the patience I have spared your kingdom.”

The words were quiet, but they struck her like a blow. She moved, her every motion deliberate, defiant. When her feet touched the wet ground, she lifted her face to the manor that would become her prison.

The Duke turned away. “Bring her inside.”

The great hall of Ravenscar was as cold as its master. Shadows gathered in the corners, the air heavy with the scent of old stone and extinguished candles. A fire burned in the hearth, but it did not reach the edges of the room.

Servants lined the walls, their faces pale and unreadable. None dared to meet her eyes.

Lucien walked ahead, his cloak trailing across the marble floor. He stopped before the stairs and turned to face her.

“You will remain here,” he said. “The east wing is sealed. You will not enter it. The servants will attend to your needs, and your meals will be sent. You are not a prisoner, but you are not free to roam.”

Seraphina’s lips curved in a bitter smile. “Then I am both caged and free? How poetic of you, my lord.”

A flicker of amusement, or warning, crossed his eyes. “It is not poetry. It is survival.”

He took a step closer, and though she refused to move, her breath caught.

“Do not mistake mercy for weakness,” he said softly. “The men who wished you dead are still outside these walls. I am the only reason your heart still beats.”

She wanted to strike him. To claw through the mask and see if there was truly a man or just the echo of war beneath it. Instead, she said quietly, “Then you are my captor and my savior. How convenient.”

He studied her for a long moment, then turned toward the stairs. “Rest,” he said. “You will need your strength.”

“For what?” she demanded.

His answer came without pause.

“For the truth.”

Then he was gone, the sound of his boots fading up the staircase.

That night, sleep refused to come. The rain had ceased, but the manor still groaned as if mourning its own ghosts. Seraphina sat by the fire, her hair unbound, her thoughts burning.

Every moment in that carriage replayed in her mind, the smell of smoke, the sight of her father’s banner burning. The Duke’s eyes, unreadable, as he watched her kingdom fall.

She could not forgive him. She would not.

A sound interrupted her thoughts. A faint metallic clink, as if something had fallen in the corridor. She rose and moved to the door, pressing her ear against it.

Nothing.

Then, faintly, a whisper.

“…Vale…”

Her name.

She froze, her pulse quickening.

“…Vale…”

The sound came again, this time clearer. It was a man’s voice, rough and low, carried by the wind, or by something else. She opened the door and stepped into the dark corridor.

“Who’s there?”

Only silence.

But on the floor, near the threshold, lay a single silver key.

She bent to pick it up. The metal was cold, too cold. On its handle, etched in fine script, were two letters.

L.A.

Lucien Ashbourne.

Her hand closed around it, and her hatred twisted into something sharper.

The man who had taken everything from her had left a door unlocked.

And Seraphina Vale had never met a door she did not intend to open.

Chapter 2 unwelcome proposal

"Mother Lina said I have to go before Lord Maximus returns. My personal tutor ordered it before he left, and I've delayed it long enough. He'll kill me with his cold stare if I postpone any longer, besides, his returning in the next few days" she said with a playful smile and caressed his hair

"Then let me go with you," Thorold offered.

"You're the demon prince; you can't abandon your realm, especially now that you rule it."

He sighed, his voice filled with longing. "Two hundred years is too long to be apart."

"I need to discover who I truly am, Thorold," she replied, her voice laced with determination. "I don't just want to be the goddess who teaches and heals. I want to know my own worth, and maybe if I know my inner worth and my guardian angel, only then will I be able to access the celestial library of truth and then find out why the four realms are torn apart, since no one is willing to tell me." She paused, then continued softly, "I'm sorry. I didn't m
