Chapter 1

ISLA

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring out the window as the golden light of late afternoon bathed my room in a soft glow. The breeze whispered through the curtains, gentle and warm.

A sharp knock broke the quiet.

“Isla,” my father’s voice called through the door, firm and unyielding. “Come downstairs. We need to talk.”

I closed my eyes, drawing in a deep breath. There was no use delaying it. Smoothing the folds of my dress, I stood and walked out, my feet heavy as I descended the grand staircase. Each step felt like a countdown to something inevitable.

When I reached the study room, he was already there, standing rigidly by the fireplace. The flames cast flickering shadows on his face, hardening the lines of his features. He didn’t look at me as I entered, only gestured to the armchair across from him.

“Sit down.”

I lowered myself into the chair, my hands clasped tightly in my lap. The air between us was thick, suffocating, as he stared into the fire. He looked like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, but I knew better. My father never let emotion sway him.

“I am sure you have heard whispers about the company,” he said, finally turning to face me. “Things are worse than you know.”

I remained silent, waiting.

“Our financial situation is dire,” he continued, his voice cold and controlled. “The company is on the verge of collapse.”

His words struck like a blow, but I forced myself to stay composed.

“We have one option left,” he said, his tone shifting into something harder. “An offer that will save us—but it requires your cooperation.”

My heart pounded. “What do you mean?”

He met my eyes, his expression unreadable. “You are to marry Oliver Blackwood.”

I blinked, the name hanging in the air like a curse. “Marry?” I whispered, disbelief choking my voice.

“Yes.” His tone was sharp, final. “Oliver’s family is prepared to invest heavily in the company, but only if you become his wife.”

My pulse quickened. “I’ve never even met him.”

“This isn’t about personal feelings,” he snapped. “This is about duty. The Blackwoods are powerful. This marriage will secure our future.”

A cold weight settled in my chest. “Why me? Why not Victoria? She’s the oldest and more accomplished than I am.”

Victoria sighed, shaking her head. “Isla can you just for once not act so stubborn. I’ve done alot in trying to secure our future and this company. This is the least you can do.”

“Selling my freedom and future to a stranger is the least I can do? Why me?! Why not you?” I snapped at her.

My father leaned forward, his gaze like steel. “Because he chose you! He wants you.”

The words hit like a slap. I clenched my fists in my lap, trying to hold on to the last shred of my dignity. “And if I say no?”

His face hardened, his voice turning even colder. “If you refuse, you will no longer be a part of this family.”

The finality in his words stole my breath. I felt as though the ground beneath me had shifted, leaving me on the edge of a cliff.

“You’re asking me to give up my life,” I said, my voice trembling.

“You’re saving this family,” he countered, his tone unwavering. “There is no other choice.”

I glanced over at my mother, who had been sitting quietly on the sofa, her hands folded in her lap. She hadn’t spoken a word since I entered the room. “Mother, please,” I begged, my voice breaking. “Say something.”

Her eyes met mine, soft but distant. “Isla,” she said softly, “sometimes we must make sacrifices for the ones we love.”

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. “Sacrifice? You’re asking me to marry a stranger for money.”

Her gaze faltered, but she didn’t deny it.

I swallowed the lump rising in my throat, feeling trapped, cornered by the very people who were supposed to protect me. I wanted to scream, to run, but there was nowhere to go.

“Fine,” I said, my voice hollow. “I will marry him.”

My father’s shoulders relaxed, satisfaction glimmering in his eyes. “The marriage documents have been prepared already. I’ll bring it up to your room and you’d sign it.”

My mother let out a quiet sigh of relief.

But inside, something in me cracked.

As I stood and walked out of the room, the name Oliver Blackwood echoed in my mind—a name that would soon reshape my entire life.

Chapter 2

ISLA

I woke up the next morning, the weight of my decision pressing down on me like a heavy blanket. My body felt sluggish, my mind foggy, and the events of the previous day played over in my head like a bad dream. The marriage deal. I had signed it, practically handing over my life to a stranger.

Or at least, I thought he was a stranger.

The name had lingered in my mind ever since I saw it on the contract: Oliver Blackwood. It had tugged at something buried deep in my memory, gnawing at the edges until realization struck like a lightning bolt.

I shot upright in bed. “No…” I whispered, my breath catching.

Memories surfaced, sharp and vivid. Oliver Blackwood wasn’t a stranger. He was the boy from high school—the one who used to sit in the back of the class, the one everyone whispered about. His presence had been suffocating even then, his gaze cold and calculating. He wasn’t just distant—he was cruel. And now… now I was
