Chapter 1 Wrong Email
“I’m too busy. I can’t be home, mom,” Raymond replied over the phone on speaker, while scrolling through unread mails on his laptop. The screen casting a faint glow on his face.
“You don’t have to stay for long. Your father requested that you come,” the feminine voice replied, echoing against the frosted glass walls of the spacious office.
A soft knock interrupted their conversation, drawing Raymond's attention. He quickly picked up his phone and turned off the speaker, gesturing for the lady at the door to come in. She walked in carrying a stack of documents with both hands as she halted opposite his desk.
“Fine. I’ll be there. See you soon. Love you,” he concluded with a hushed tone. Getting up from his plush leather chair, he slid his suits on, previously hung over his chair, thereafter arranging the clutter on his desk.
Finally, regarding the presence of the lady, he asked,
“Yes, Amelia. What do you need?”
Amelia raised her eyebrows. It was obvious why she was there, but she replied, “Pending documents to sign, sir. They’re overdue.”
“Not today. Anything else?”
“But sir, there’s a meeting with one of our top investors, Mr. Briggs. We have competitors admiring their offer.”
“Call for a reschedule.”
“it’s the fourth time we are requesting a reschedule this week—”
“I said call for a reschedule,” Raymond glared, this time, pausing and looking up at Amelia who quivered at his harsh tone.
“Yes, sir.” Amelia nodded, her shoulders slumping in defeat as she walked out. Her colleagues in the open office space whispered and giggled amongst themselves, looking over to Raymond's closed door.
Amelia reached her desk opposite the boss's office. She dumped the documents on her desk, took a quick glance at her boss who seemed to be having a bad day, as he gulped in a glass of water.
One of her colleagues walked up to her, leaning on the silver rail separating her cubicle from the rest. “Hey, quack, seems the boss is tired of you already,” she mocked.
“He has a busy schedule,” Amelia replied, softly without stealing a glance at her.
“Of course he has. We are among the best for a reason. That’s why he needs a qualified secretary to handle his tasks in his absence, not some high school dropout who can't even navigate excel worksheet. Wonder how a highschool dropout got selected,” Lily scorned.
Amelia's eyes glowed with disbelief.
“Surprised? I know about everything happening here. I was made a supervisor for a reason. And unlike some, I've the qualifications for my role. You bet I'll find out what nasty things you did to get your way up here, you sl*t!”
Amelia bit her lips, holding back the tears that were threatening to drop.
“A waiter in our office? Didn't you work for the coffee house down the street?”
Amelia cast down her gaze, feeling ashamed. It was impossible that anyone ever found out where she used to work or anything about her past.
The boss’s door swung open and Raymond stepped out of his office in a rush, receiving a call. The floor fell silent as he walked past them.
“Good night, sir,” Amelia said out of courtesy but he ignored her completely.
Lily snorted under her breath, pretending to be assisting Amelia at her desk. As soon as the elevator bell dings, and the door closed, the laughter increased. All eyes fell back on Amelia.
Amelia went back to her desk rescheduling her boss’s meetings for another day. Lily followed close behind her,
“What? you can’t operate a desktop? Oh sweety, that’s not how you handle the mouse,” Lily taunted, “Or is a serving tray more your style? ”
Amelia got up in frustration, and ran out of the office into the female restroom, just before the tears began to fall down her eyes.
She was barely two weeks into the job. All her attempt to make friends with her colleagues only made her their enemy. She doesn’t understand why being a secretary to the boss meant so much to them, when they already held good positions at the firm, especially Lily.
She adjusted her makeup in front of the mirror, sweeping her palms over her dark brown wavy hair, packed in a bun. She stepped out.
Lily waited for her by the entrance, pointing her phone to Amelia's face with a smug smile.
“Look, a message from the boss. I’ll be attending the meeting with Mr. Briggs. Get me a drink and remind him.”
Amelia was surprised but knew Lily couldn’t lie about such.
She mailed Mr. Briggs as Lily walked into the conference room. After an hour, Lily stormed back out, furious,
“Have you called Mr. Briggs?”
“I sent a mail,” Amelia responded coldly, trying to busy herself with cluttered files.
“And then? No follow up? He’s an hour late and you know how the boss gets with late meetings.” Lily began to yell at her, drawing the attention of the others.
“Let her be, Lily. She’s new,” one of her colleagues called out to Lily,
“Amelia, kindly reach out to Mr. Briggs.”
He was a tall slender man. He had the IT tag on. But Lily didn't stop. She pulled Amelia away from her desk in frustration, going through her sent mails.
“See! You worthless waiter. You sent a different date!”
“i didn’t,” Amelia retorted but Lily got up and pulled her arm, forcing her to look at her computer screen.
“Can't you see?” Amelia saw the error in the message and immediately her heart began to pound. Her hands quivered as she reached for the telephone, to dial Mr. Briggs.
“I’ll sort it out,” she managed to regain her voice.
“Oh sure. You’ll sort it out when you get back on the streets where you belong.”
The telephone was answered,
“Hello, Mr Briggs, from Carter firms.”
“Oh, yes. I got your message.”
“No. Mr. Briggs. There was an error in the last mail I sent. It should have been a reminder, sir.”
“Well, we already closed a better deal, elsewhere. We hope to work with you in the future.”
The call dropped. Amelia glanced over at Lily, fidgeting, “Mr. Briggs canceled. What…what do we do?”
“We?” Lily scuffed, “There’s no we here. My advice? Write a resignation and go back to waitressing. Don't force what you're not,” Lily hissed and left for her desk, far ahead the large office.
Amelia was the last to leave the office. She stared at the boss’s number a couple times attempting to call him but he previously warned about calling him outside of working hours.
She already crafted a resignation mail and read it over and over before shutting down her desktop and heading home.
It was the next day morning. Amelia rushed out of bed and hurried for work. It was nine O'clock—an hour late.
Her phone rang just as she stepped off the elevator, the shrill sound cutting through the tense silence.
It was her little brother, his voice trembled with fear.
“Melly, mum’s sick. We’re at the hospital,” he said with a broken voice. Amelia's heart stopped, the world spinning around her as she struggled to comprehend the news.
Her mother, her anchor, was in the hospital, and she was stuck here, on the verge of losing her job. A dream job.
“I’ll be there soon,” she managed to choke out, her voice barely above a whisper.
With trembling hands, she made her way to her desk, only to find it empty, her belongings packed into a cardboard box. The sight struck her like a physical blow, tears welling up in her eyes. Little Dennis and her mom was all she had to call her family.
“Mr Carter has been around since five and you’re just arriving. Over there. I helped you pack.”
Amelia looked up and found Lily with a smug smile. She dumped her bag on her seat, avoiding the stares from the rest of her colleagues.
Every step toward the boss's office felt like a journey through hell. As she approached the door, she began to sweat profusely. She dropped a knock before going in, wiping off a stray tear from the sides of her face.
The boss looked more angry than ever as he paced the room, with a cup of tea in his hand, the herbal scent filling the room. Amelia gulped a nervous lump down her throat. He glanced at the golden watch on his wrist and turned his back on her.
“I…I’ve come to tender my resignation.”
Chapter 2: Strike a Deal
Raymond's gaze drifted absently over the bustling city streets below, where tiny figures hurried past like ants, and cars weaved in and out of the maze of traffic. A heavy silence settled in the room, broken only by the soft hum of the city outside.
With raised eyebrows, he turned around and repeated,
“A resignation?”
He walked away from his desk and back again, picking up a white document and tossing it to her face.
“I bet you don't understand the gravity of your mistake.”
Amelia quivered at his strangely dark tone and the only word that could escape her quivering lips were,
“I’m sorry, sir.”
Memories of how he's been good to her in the previous weeks crossed her mind as the weight of guilt fell on her. It was the first time she ever heard him raise his voice at anyone. She felt the eyes of her coworkers peering into the office. Watching everything. Except that they couldn't hear their conversations.
With tear-filled eyes, her gaze fe
