In her past life, Vivian Davis was the biggest fool. Soft-hearted and trusting, she survived three brutal years in the post-apocalyptic wasteland—only to be strangled to death by her manipulative best friend, Chloe, while her boyfriend stood by and watched. Death should have been the end. Instead, Vivian wakes up ten hours before the outbreak. She has three years of wasteland survival instincts, the memories of everyone who betrayed her, and something she never possessed in her previous life: Chloe's compulsion power. With fake, Vivian can make men instinctively want to protect her, obey her, and fight for her. So she decides to put it to good use. To the world, Vivian is a fragile damsel who needs saving but behind closed doors, she's a cold-blooded survivor who can drive a blade through an infected brainstem without blinking. Her act fools everyone—except Captain Rex Lawson, the sharp-tongued commander of the shelter's mercenaries. Immune to her compulsion, Rex seems to see straight through her performance. Yet, instead of exposing her, he makes her an unexpected offer. If Vivian wants to survive this apocalypse, she'll have to play by his rules. Rex can set the rules. Vivian will decide how the game is played.
Chapter 1 GOOD LUCK, HOST
The hands around Vivian Davis' throat belonged to the man she had once trusted with her life.
Julian Sterling.
His fingers dug into her neck, crushing her windpipe as he pinned her against the wall of the shelter's water filtration room. She clawed at his wrists, struggling for air, unable to understand how the man who had once promised to protect her could look her in the eyes while killing her.
Three years. That's how long she had survived in this hellhole. She had learned to kill the infected before they reached her, strip supplies from abandoned buildings, and recognize a scavenger's intentions before he reached for his weapon. She had survived things that would have broken most people.
Yet none of that had prepared her for this.
She knew how to fight. She knew how to survive. What she hadn't prepared for was being murdered by her own boyfriend while her best friend watched.
"Julian..." Vivian rasped.
"I'm sorry, Vivi." Chloe's voice floated above her, sweet and dripping with false sorrow. "But there's only room for one more person in the inner tier. Julian thinks I deserve it more. I'm just a fragile girl. I can't fight like you can."
She paused, her expression almost sympathetic.
"You understand, don't you?"
All this over a room. A privileged suite in the shelter's inner tier.
The inner tier had only one privileged suite left, and the next supply allocation would determine who occupied it. Julian had enough influence over the shelter's administration to decide who received that privilege.
Vivian had assumed the choice would be obvious.
She had helped secure the shelter's outer perimeter. She had led scavenging expeditions, brought back medicine, and killed more infected than most of the guards.
Chloe, meanwhile, had spent much of their time inside crying, trembling, and clinging to whichever man promised to protect her.
Yet Chloe wanted the suite.
And Julian had decided she deserved it.
Her fingers searched for leverage, instinctively targeting the vulnerable points beneath his jaw and along his wrist. But Julian had his weight positioned against her, leaving her little room to move.
Pain exploded through her skull.
"Don't look at me like that, Vivian!" Julian snarled, pressing harder against her throat. "You think you're better than everyone because you brought back supplies? You should have shared them when I asked! If you had, we wouldn't be in this mess. Just die already!"
Coward. The word burned through her mind. Julian couldn't even hold a weapon steady without someone watching his back, yet he was strong enough to strangle her.
The bitter taste of betrayal filled her mouth, heavier and deadlier than the lack of oxygen.
If I ever have another chance, the raging thought tore through her dying brain, I will skin you both alive and feed you to the infected.
His fingers tightened until even the desperate struggle of her body began to fade. Her vision narrowed to a blur of concrete and shadows.
Then everything went dark.

GASP!
Vivian’s eyes snapped open. She jolted upright, gasping for air as her lungs expanded with a painful heave.
She slammed her hands against her throat. No bruises. No crushed cartilage. Her skin was smooth, warm, and intact.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she frantically scanned her surroundings.
She wasn't on the cold floor of the Grand Horizon shelter's water filtration room. She was sitting on a suede sofa inside her luxury apartment living room.
Pale morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, illuminating the dust motes floating above the glass coffee table.
Vivian grabbed her phone off the glass coffee table with trembling fingers. The digital clock blinked back at her:
MAY 12, 08:14 AM.
Ten hours. She was back. May 12. Ten hours before the outbreak was supposed to begin.
At six that evening, the V-Toxin strain would breach the city's water reservoir. Within hours, millions of people would be infected, turning the city into a hunting ground.
“Vivi? Are you okay, sweetie?”
The voice sent a chill through Vivian’s blood.
Chloe stood in the kitchen doorway, holding two ceramic mugs of coffee. She looked utterly harmless—dressed in an oversized pastel cardigan, her wide, innocent eyes brimming with concern.
In her past life, Vivian had trusted that look. She had survived three years of wasteland hell, only for her "best friend" that she had always protected, fed and brought into the shelter to choke her from behind on a cold floor.
“You looked like you were having a nightmare,” Chloe cooed, walking over and placing the mugs on the table.
"You've been worrying about Julian again, haven't you?" Chloe cooed. "Vivi, you need to stop overthinking everything. If he seems distant, just let him know you need him. Men like Julian love feeling wanted."
Julian Sterling. Wealthy, arrogant, and utterly worthless. She remembered him watching her struggle, then taking over when Chloe's words had made it clear that Vivian needed to die. He hadn't hesitated. He hadn't even looked remorseful.
They took everything from me, Vivian thought. This time, I wouldn't stop until they wished they were dead.
She watched Chloe’s hand on her knee feeling disgusted.
Chloe had always possessed an unnatural hold over men. A few tears, a trembling lip, and even the most hardened survivors would rush to protect her. Vivian had once mistaken it for charm.
Now she knew better. Chloe's tears triggered a psychic compulsion, and it had helped her steal everything Vivian worked for.
A strange coldness spread through her chest, followed by a faint vibration beneath her skin.
She stared at her hands. Something had changed.
Chloe's ability. The strange power that had once made men bend over backward to protect her.
Was it possible that the reset had transferred it to her?
She glanced down at her hands, then back at Chloe, who was casually sliding her fingers toward Vivian’s designer handbag on the couch—the bag containing Vivian’s apartment keycard, credit cards, and the keys to her utility SUV.
She’s trying to steal my keys before the outbreak even starts, Vivian realized.
The heat in Vivian's chest flared. A cold l resonance echoed directly inside her mind.
[Timeline Reset Successful.]
[Warning: Revenge is merely the baseline. The host must accumulate power, establish dominion, and conquer the emerging chaos. Failure to rise above the ruins or settling for mere survival will trigger a timeline collapse, returning the host to the moment of execution.]
[Compulsion Protocol Activated.]
[Rule One: The ability requires a display of vulnerability.]
[Rule Two: Tears must be fabricated. Genuine emotional distress will break the compulsion.]
[Good luck, Host.]
The effect wouldn't last forever, she suspected. And if the tears had to be fake, there was clearly more to the ability than simply crying. She would have to test its limits.
Vivian didn't yell or slap Chloe’s hand away from her bag.
Instead, she let her shoulders slump and pinched the soft skin of her thigh beneath the couch cushion. A moment later, her eyes watered.
A tear welled in her left eye and slipped down her porcelain cheek
"Chloe..." Vivian whispered, her voice cracking with delicate despair. "Why are you looking at my bag like that? Are... are you going to leave me?"
Chloe glanced at Vivian's tear-streaked face, momentarily confused by the sudden change in her expression. Before she could respond, the front door burst open..
The front door swung open abruptly.
Marcus, the armed security guard assigned to the apartment corridor, stepped inside with one hand resting on his sidearm. He had felt an inexplicable urge to check on the disturbance coming from the apartment.
"Is everything alright in here?!" Marcus demanded, his eyes sweeping the room until they landed on Vivian’s weeping face.
The moment Marcus saw Vivian’s tear-stained cheek and trembling lip, his posture changed. His pupils dilated. A fierce look of protectiveness crossed his rugged features, overriding his professional boundaries.
"Hey!" Marcus barked, his voice dropping into a protective roar as he pointed at Chloe. "Hands away from her! What the hell are you doing to Miss Davis?!"
Chloe blinked, bewildered. "What? Nothing! I was just—"
"I heard you raising your voice at her!" Marcus stepped forward, positioning himself between the two women. His eyes fell on Chloe's hand near Vivian's handbag. "Step away from her belongings."
Chloe looked terrified, staring at the guard in disbelief. "Marcus, are you crazy?! I’m her friend!"
"Miss Davis is clearly frightened. Step away from her." Marcus moved between them, his expression hardening. "I won't ask you twice."
Behind Marcus's broad shoulders, Vivian wiped the fake tear from her cheek. The trembling disappeared from her lips, and her expression settled into something entirely different.
It worked.
Chloe's power really belonged to her now.
She looked down at Chloe, who was trembling on the floor, confused and helpless without the charm she used to rely on.
"Marcus..." Vivian lowered her eyes, her voice trembling. "I don't think I can stay here anymore. Could you help me move my things into my SUV? I just want to feel safe."
"Of course, Miss Davis ," Marcus declared without a second thought, drawing his weapon to cover her exit. "Anything you need."
Vivian smiled—a small, angelic, poison-laced smile that Chloe couldn't see.
The game had begun.
Chapter 2 THE ART OF CROCODILE TEARS
Vivian didn't waste a second. While Marcus guarded her with exaggerated vigilance, his eyes scanning the empty hallway as if snipers lurked in the shadows, Vivian moved through her apartment quickly and methodically.
She packed high-calorie provisions, cases of bottled water, medical supplies, multi-tools, and every piece of durable outdoor clothing she owned.
Chloe lay on the living room floor, nursing her bruised elbow and staring at Vivian with a mixture of shock and resentment.
"Vivi, what is wrong with you?!" Chloe hissed under her breath, keeping her voice low so Marcus wouldn't hear. "You're acting like a freak! You let that crazy guard push me!"
Vivian paused near the kitchen counter, picking up a heavy stainless-steel thermos. She turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto Chloe.
There was no warmth in Vivian’s eyes. No affection, no past history. Just a flat, calculating evaluation—the look of a butcher inspecting meat.
"If you don'
