Açıklama

Six years ago, Ethan Carter told me he didn't love me anymore and disappeared without a word. I never fully got over it. I just learned to live around the hole he left behind. Then my sister brought her fiancé home to meet the family. It was him. I sat through that entire dinner smiling, pretending my whole world hadn't just tilted sideways, telling myself I could handle this, that I was a big girl, that I could watch my little sister marry the one man I never stopped thinking about. Then he looked at me across the table. And some small, reckless part of me didn't want to survive this wedding. I wanted to ruin it. (Short story)

Chapter 1 Her Fiancé

MAYA'S POV

"I have an announcement," Claire said, practically bouncing in her seat at the head of the table.

I already knew what was coming. She'd been glowing for weeks, texting me cryptic things like "big news soon" with too many exclamation points for someone who claimed to hate exclamation points. I smiled at her over my wine glass, bracing myself for happy tears.

She held up her hand, and the ring on it caught the light from the chandelier. "We're engaged."

The table erupted. Mom gasped and pressed both hands to her mouth. Dad stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor. I got up too, hugging my sister so hard she laughed into my shoulder, and for a second, one whole second, I was just happy for her. Genuinely, uncomplicated happy.

"Show us the ring properly," Mom said, already reaching for Claire's hand.

"Where's the lucky guy?" Dad asked, looking toward the hallway. "He's parking the car, right?"

"He'll be in soon." Claire's cheeks were pink with excitement. "You're going to love him. His name is Ethan."

The name landed somewhere behind my ribs, quiet and stupid, the way a name can if you've heard it enough times in your own head at three in the morning. Ethan wasn't exactly a rare name. I told myself that immediately. There were a hundred Ethans in this city. A thousand.

"Ethan Carter," Claire added, pulling up a photo on her phone, still babbling about how they met at a work conference eight months ago, how he swept her off her feet, how she never believed in love at first sight until him.

I looked at the photo.

My stomach dropped straight through the floor.

It was him. Older, sharper around the jaw, his hair a little shorter than I remembered, but it was undeniably him. The same man who'd once told me he loved me more than anything in the world and then, six months later, told me he didn't love me at all.

"Maya?" Claire was looking at me. "You okay? You went pale."

"I'm fine." My voice came out steadier than I had any right to expect. "Just excited for you."

I sat back down and drank half my wine in one go, forcing my face into something that resembled joy while my whole chest felt like it had been kicked in. Mom kept asking questions. Dad kept talking about golf, apparently already planning some future father-in-law bonding trip. I nodded along, said the right things at the right times, and prayed to whatever was listening that I was somehow wrong.

Then the front door opened.

"Sorry, that parking garage is a nightmare," a voice called from the hallway, and every hope I had that I'd misread the photo died right there.

Ethan Carter walked into my parents' dining room like he belonged there, holding a bottle of wine he'd clearly picked out to impress people he'd never met, wearing the kind of confident, easy smile that used to be aimed at me across a much smaller table years ago.

His eyes found mine before Claire even finished the introduction.

I watched something flicker across his face, shock, maybe, or something closer to dread, gone so fast I could have imagined it if I hadn't spent three years memorizing every single expression that man was capable of making.

"Everyone, this is Ethan," Claire said, beaming, sliding her hand into his. "Ethan, this is my family. You already know my parents from the video call."

"Nice to finally meet you both in person," Ethan said smoothly, shaking my father's hand, kissing my mother's cheek, every inch the perfect fiancé.

Then Claire turned toward me, and I felt the floor tilt under my chair.

"And this," she said, pride in her voice, "is my sister. My best friend in the whole world. Maya."

Ethan's hand extended toward mine, steady, calm, like his heart wasn't doing exactly what mine was doing right now.

"It's nice to meet you," he said.

Like we were strangers. Like he hadn't spent two years of my life teaching me what it felt like to be loved completely, and then six more months teaching me what it felt like to lose that entirely.

I took his hand. His grip was firm, brief, professional, the exact grip you'd give someone you'd genuinely never met before, and I hated him for how easily he pulled it off. I hated myself more for the fact that touching his hand at all sent the same stupid current up my arm it always used to.

"Nice to meet you too," I said, and somehow my voice didn't shake.

"Maya's a graphic designer," Claire told him, oblivious, already moving on, already refilling glasses and pulling out her phone to show him some Pinterest board she'd made for the wedding. "She did the branding for my whole business, actually. She's ridiculously talented."

"Is that right." Ethan's eyes cut back to me for half a second too long. "I'd love to see your work sometime."

"Sure," I said, the word coming out flat and hollow. "Whenever."

Dinner went on like that for another hour, Claire glowing, my parents asking a hundred questions about the wedding, Ethan answering every single one with the kind of easy charm I remembered too well, and me sitting there pretending to eat, pretending to smile, pretending my entire chest wasn't caving in one slow inch at a time.

At one point, reaching across the table for the bread basket at the same moment he did, our hands brushed. Just for a second. Just skin against skin, nothing more, and I still felt it everywhere, hot and sharp and completely unwelcome.

He pulled his hand back first this time. That was new. He used to be the one who never pulled away first.

By the time the night ended, I hugged Claire goodbye at the door, told her I was so happy for her, meant maybe sixty percent of it, and walked to my car with my hands shaking so badly I had to sit behind the wheel for a full five minutes before I trusted myself to drive.

My phone buzzed just as I pulled out of the driveway.

Unknown number.

Ethan: I know this is insane. I need five minutes to talk to you. Please.

I stared at the screen at a red light, my heart slamming against my ribs so hard it hurt, every rational part of my brain screaming at me to block the number and never look back.

I didn't block it.

I just sat there, engine idling, staring at his name on my screen, and realized with a sick, sinking certainty that this was going to be so much harder than pretending to be strangers at one dinner table.

The light turned green behind me, and I still hadn't moved.

Chapter 2 Strangers

I didn't answer his text that night. I didn't answer it the next morning either, not until I'd made coffee, sat with it going cold on the counter, and read his message about a dozen more times like it might change if I stared at it long enough.

Me: There's nothing to talk about, Ethan.

His reply came fast, like he'd been waiting with his phone in his hand.

Ethan: Five minutes. That's all I'm asking. I didn't even know, Maya. I swear to god I didn't know she was your sister.

I sat with that for a second, something in my chest twisting sideways. It made sense, in an awful way. Ethan and I dated during the two years I'd kept myself deliberately apart from my family, back when I was still angry at my parents over things that felt like the whole world at twenty-two and like nothing at all now. He'd never met Claire. Never met my parents. I'd kept that entire part of my life sealed off from him on purpose, and now the walls I'd built wer
