Sinopse

Elowen had one rule: Never let Hunter Vance break her heart twice. Once, she loved him enough to ask him to choose her. He didn’t. Instead, he chose a family obligation, an engagement to another woman, and a future that left Elowen thousands of miles away, rebuilding herself from the pieces he left behind. Now, in her third year at the University of Manchester, Elowen has everything under control. She’s a rising star in the university’s athletic division. She’s the girl everyone knows. She’s untouchable. And she’s dating Caleb, the golden-boy hockey forward, building a safe life with him to convince herself she can finally move on from Hunter. Then Hunter walks back into her life. The former boxing prodigy who once dreamed of going professional is no longer the boy she remembers. He’s darker now. Tatted. Pierced. Dangerously confident. And completely obsessed with getting her back. Hunter doesn’t care about her real boyfriend. He doesn’t care how many people are watching. He doesn’t care that Chloe is pursuing Caleb just to move on from him. And he definitely doesn’t care that Elowen keeps telling him she’s over him. A hand at her waist. A whispered threat against her ear. A stolen touch in an empty hallway. A kiss that leaves her furious with herself for wanting another one. The more Elowen pushes him away, the harder Hunter fights his way back in. But Hunter made one mistake years ago: He didn’t choose her when he had the chance. Now Elowen has a new life, another man on her arm, and a heart she claims no longer belongs to him. And Hunter Vance? He’s done asking for permission. Because this time, he’s not walking away without a fight. Not from the ring. Not from Caleb. And certainly not from her.

Chapter 1: THE GOLDEN BOY AND THE GHOST

"Mercer, if you drop your shoulder like that again on a cross-ice breakaway, I will personally ensure you spend the entire winter semester scraping bird droppings off the stadium roof!"

Coach Keller’s booming voice tore through the frigid air of the ice rink, bouncing violently off the steel rafters and rattling the double-paned glass windows of the upper observation deck. His face was currently taking on the dark red shade of a bruised plum, his clip-on microphone crackling with static every time he drew a breath. Down below him, the ice rink stretched out like a massive slab of polished marble, illuminated by the harsh white glare of hanging overhead floodlights. Fog rose in thin, lazy curls from the white surface, mingling with the heavy frost hanging in the indoor chill.

Standing behind the tinted glass, clipboard clutched like a shield against her dark knit sweater, Elowen Pendelton did not even blink.

She was a third-year sports management student holding down the exhausting, often unglamorous role of Lead Student Hockey Manager. In practical terms, that meant her daily life was an endless loop of tracking ice-time metrics, lugging heavy duffel bags of gear across frosted pavement, balancing multi-thousand-dollar equipment budgets, and listening to middle-aged men scream themselves hoarse over a frozen disc of vulcanized rubber.

Down on the ice, the Manchester Timberwolves were executing their mandatory morning drill. The air was filled with the rhythmic, harsh scraping of sharp steel against frozen ice, accompanied by the hard, resonant thwack of composite sticks striking the puck. The players moved in a synchronized surge of purple, black, ash, and white, the official university athletic colors.

At center ice, Caleb Mercer moved with the kind of effortless, sweeping grace that made professional sports scouts droon, athletic directors beam, and campus publicists weep tears of pure joy.

He was golden in the most insufferable, textbook way imaginable. He had sandy blonde hair that curled damply at the nape of his neck, broad shoulders capable of anchoring a small yacht, a jawline practically sculpted by classical artisans, and a custom team jersey bearing the fierce, snarling face of a silver wolf across his chest. The captain's capital C sat proudly over his heart in bold white stitching like a holy relic.

Elowen tapped her silver ballpoint pen against the leather edge of her folder, her dark eyes tracking his movements across the red line while recording a clean set of pass-completion stats.

Then, completely unprompted, her traitorous brain took a sharp, agonizing left turn.

"Three years ago, I took down similar notes for a very specific, vastly more irritating someone back in New York," she thought. Her fingers tightened around the metal casing of her pen until her knuckles turned white.

The image flashed instantly behind her eyelids. The dark, messy hair sticking out under a sweat-stained helmet. The arrogant smirk that always made her want to hurl a water bottle at his head. The utter refusal to follow a single strategic direction she ever gave him during tactical breakdowns.

Elowen gritted her back teeth together, jaw clenching tightly as she gave her head a sharp, microscopic shake.

"No," she said silently to herself, forcing the memory down into the dark basement of her mind. "He is all in the past now. I have moved on. I am happy."

She repeated the sentences like a stern internal lecture, serving as both a fragile comfort and a blunt reminder that she was a rational, goal-oriented college student with a long-term career strategy, not a dramatic teenager clinging to ghost stories from Manhattan.

Right on cue down on the rink, Caleb caught a lightning-fast pass on his backhand, shifted his weight with a crisp turn of his skates, and executed a textbook wrist shot. The puck blasted through the air, whizzed past the goalie’s outstretched glove, and pinged off the back iron of the net with a satisfying metal ring. Score.

"Yep," Elowen thought, letting out a slow, controlled exhale as she watched the purple-clad players on the ice bump heavy padded gloves. "See? Proof positive. I have definitely, unequivocally moved on."

Down on the ice, Caleb unclipped the chin strap of his padded helmet, pulling the heavy gear off to reveal his ridiculous, perfectly disheveled hair. He wiped his sweaty brow with his sleeve and skated straight toward the side divider where Elowen stood beside the team bench. The ice blades scraped heavily against the perimeter barrier as he came to a smooth halt, spraying a fine mist of shaved ice against the kickboard.

He leaned his broad chest over the plexiglass wall and kissed her softly on the lips, completely unbothered by the fact that he was sweating like a racehorse after two hours of intensive conditioning drills.

"Good job out there," Elowen said, stepping back just half an inch to keep her professional manager facade intact while she smoothed down the lapels of her fitted blazer. "Your line shift timing was under three minutes for the first time this month. Coach Keller might actually let you live to see tomorrow."

Caleb flashed that easy, million-dollar smile that usually got him out of speeding tickets and parking fines alike. "It was all thanks to my manager. Excellent motivation."

Elowen felt a faint, betraying blush creep up the column of her neck. She reached over and tapped his heavily padded shoulder with the cap of her pen. "Stop playing around, Mercer. Coach is still holding the whistle."

Before Caleb could answer, a wave of heavy footsteps and metallic thuds rattled the perimeter boards. Half the starting roster had skated over, crowding around the glass barrier like a pack of oversized golden retrievers waiting for treats.

Jaxon, the primary defenseman with a missing front tooth and paint smeared under his eyes, slammed his heavy stick against the glass. "Look at them! Young love in the morning freezer!"

"Give the guy a break, El!" yelled Marcus, the backup goalie, leaning heavily over the barrier with his giant catch glove resting near her clipboard. "He only scored that goal so you’d give him a gold star on his roster sheet!"

The rest of the Timberwolves erupted into loud, boisterous laughter, whistling, hooting, and pounding their sticks against the boards in a deafening, rhythmic chorus that echoed off the high rafters.

Elowen couldn't help the genuine, breathless laugh that escaped her lips. She shook her head at the group, her eyes crinkling at the corners as she playfully raised her clipboard to block Marcus's massive glove. "If you guys spent half as much energy practicing your defensive rebounds as you do eavesdropping on my management space, we’d be undefeated in the entire division!"

"Ouch!" Jaxon howled, pressing a hand over his wolf emblem in mock agony. "The manager is ruthless today! Absolute ice queen!"

More laughter rippled through the group. Caleb just grinned, his warm amber eyes crinkling as he shook his head at his teammates, reaching over the barrier to gently tuck a stray strand of dark hair behind Elowen's ear. His touch was warm against her chilly skin.

"Ignore them, El," Caleb said softly, his voice dropping an octave to cut through the team's lingering banter. "Are we still on for dinner tonight? Coach said he's letting the senior line wrap up early."

"I wish," Elowen said, offering an apologetic smile that was only about forty percent fake. "I have to process the intake files for the mid-season transfers. The regional sports board is auditing our compliance by Friday afternoon. If one signature is missing from a medical release, my head goes on a pike."

Caleb sighed dramatically, resting his chin on his gloved hands over the barrier while the other players began drifting back toward center ice, still chuckling and yelling insults at each other. "You work too hard, Manager Pendelton. One of these days I am going to have to kidnap you right out of that administrative office."

"Try slacking off and I will have Coach Keller park your golden behind on the bench for the entire season opener," she shot back without missing a single beat. "Uncle Arthur gave me clear administrative authority to report roster compliance directly to the head coach, and I am not afraid to abuse it."

"Brutal," Caleb chuckled, leaning in one last time to press a lingering kiss to her forehead, the heat of his skin contrasting with the cool air of the arena. "Fine. Takeout at your apartment tonight. No excuses."

"Deal," she murmured, watching him turn back to the ice.

She stood there for a moment, her eyes following the bright purple and black jerseys as Caleb called out plays to his defensemen with the casual, unquestioned authority of someone who had never faced a single devastating consequence in his entire life.

"See?" Elowen thought again, adjusting the leather strap of her shoulder bag and smoothing down her dark trousers. "This is real. This is stable. This life does not give me grey hairs or keep me up at three in the morning."

She turned on her heel and began making her way toward the heavy exit doors of the rink wing, her crisp footsteps echoing against the rubberized flooring. The hallway leading away from the rink was lined with framed photographs of past championship teams, brass trophies locked inside glass display cases, and bold purple banners celebrating decades of university sports glory.

Before she could even reach the main stairwell leading toward the student administrative offices, the high-pitched, insistent chime of her phone shattered the quiet ambient hum of the hallway.

Elowen pulled the device from her blazer pocket, expecting a routine equipment request from the equipment manager or a notification about laundry schedules for the road trips. Instead, the screen displayed a high-priority administrative summons directly from the top floor of the main campus tower.

DEAN'S OFFICE: URGENT

Miss Pendelton, report to Dean Vance's office immediately regarding transfer athlete protocol compliance.

Elowen stopped dead in her tracks in the middle of the empty hallway, her thumb hovering over the glowing glass screen. Her stomach took an unexpected, violent dive straight into the soles of her leather boots.

"Dean Everett?" she thought, her dark eyebrows knitting together in deep confusion.

The Dean of Athletics almost never summoned student managers directly to the executive suite unless a major budget line had been completely blown or a high-profile athlete had managed to trigger a massive legal crisis. And then there was the surname. That sharp, single-syllable name sent an uncomfortably familiar, ice-cold chill straight down her spine, rattling the carefully constructed walls she had spent three long years building around her memories.

"Great," Elowen muttered under her breath, pulling her clipboard tightly against her ribs as she pivoted sharply toward the executive elevator bank. "So much for a quiet morning of administrative paperwork."

Chapter 2: The Dean’s Office

The executive wing of the administrative building smelled like expensive floor wax, old leather bound books, and institutional money. Up here on the top floor, thick purple carpets swallowed every single footstep, and high arched windows offered a panoramic view of Manchester University’s sprawling campus.

Elowen smoothed down the lapels of her blazer, adjusting the heavy strap of her shoulder bag as she made her way toward the administrative corridor. Before she could even reach the main hall, a familiar shoulder bumped lightly against hers as Maya bounced into step beside her, rocking her typical tomboy style. She had on an oversized vintage denim jacket, fresh high-top sneakers, and her dark curls pulled back into a messy, effortless high ponytail.

"Where are you off to in such a rush, Lead Manager?" Maya asked, throwing an arm over Elowen's shoulders with an easy grin.

"Dean Everett called for me," Elowen replied, checking the time on her w
