Sinopse
She gave him three years of silent sacrifice. He gave her a pregnant mistress. For three years, Rowena Vance bled for the Crestfall Pack. While Alpha Kaelen fought distant wars, Rowena managed his territory, healed his warriors, and kept his throne intact—all while waiting for the day he would finally grant her the family she craved. Instead, Kaelen returns with a fragile blonde on his arm and a devastating decree: Virella carries his heir, and Rowena must share her title, her home, and her mate. Expecting her to obey out of duty, Kaelen is stunned when Rowena does the unthinkable. She doesn't scream. She doesn't beg. She strips off the Luna Seal, severs the mate bond, and walks straight out into the icy rain. Left with a falling pack, collapsing treaties, and a deceitful mistress, Kaelen realizes too late that he didn't just lose a wife—he lost the very foundation of his empire. But when he goes to drag her back, he finds Rowena standing beside someone far more dangerous. Enter Alpha Cassian—the feared Shadow King of the Nightshade Sovereign Pack. Ruthless, ancient, and immensely powerful, Cassian has watched Rowena suffer in silence for years. Now that she has broken her chains, he has no intention of letting her go. Kaelen wants his Luna back. But the Shadow Alpha is ready to burn the realm to keep his Queen.
Chapter 1
The tea was cold by the time the gates finally groaned open.
Rowena didn't look up from the ledger immediately. For three years, every crack in the ledgers of Crestfall was a crack she had patched with her own hands. While Kaelen fought his endless border wars to expand his reputation, she was the one who bargained for grain rations, managed the winter reserves, and kept the pack elders from tearing each other apart.
She wiped a ink-stained thumb against her apron, standing up as heavy boots echoed down the stone corridor.
Her heart beat a little faster—not out of fear, but out of a quiet, desperate hope. Today was supposed to be the day. Three years of waiting for her mate to settle his duty so they could finally claim their bond completely and build a life.
The heavy oak doors of the great hall swung inward.
Kaelen stepped through the threshold, tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing the golden wolf-pelt mantle of the Crestfall Alpha. But he wasn't alone.
Tucked tightly under his right arm was a young woman with fine, pale hair and a delicate silk gown that looked absurdly out of place in the cold mountain fortress. Her hands clung to Kaelen’s leather harness like a frightened child, her light eyes wide as she scanned the stone room.
Rowena’s eyes fell to the woman’s waist. Kaelen’s heavy leather cloak was draped loosely over her shoulders, but it couldn't hide the soft, distinct curve of her stomach.
The scent hit Rowena a second later—sweet honeysuckle mixed sharply with Kaelen’s signature pine and amber.
The room went dead silent. The three elders standing near the hearth stopped talking, their gazes dropping to the floor in awkward discomfort.
"Rowena," Kaelen said. His voice was heavy, carrying that familiar tone he used when delivering orders to his lieutenants. "This is Virella."
Rowena stayed behind the mahogany desk. Her fingers pressed into the polished wood until her knuckles turned white, but her face remained completely calm. "I can see that."
Kaelen took a step forward, leaving the girl slightly behind him. He looked at Rowena, his brow furrowed as if he were trying to navigate a minor administrative error.
"Virella is carrying my child," Kaelen stated flatly, without a hint of tremor in his voice. "The healer confirmed it two weeks ago at the southern outpost."
A sharp, phantom pain stabbed through Rowena’s chest, so cold and sudden it almost stole the air from her lungs. Two weeks ago. While she had been up until dawn calculating troop medical costs, he had been tending to a mistress in the south.
"I see," Rowena said quietly. "And what does this have to do with Crestfall?"
"Everything," Kaelen replied, his jaw tightening. "The pack needs a blood heir. The elders have been pressing for one since last spring. Virella will remain here in the main estate under my personal protection."
He paused, taking another step toward her, expecting the breaking point. Expecting the tears, the screaming, or the desperate plea for him to explain himself.
"I am not asking you to step down as Luna, Rowena," Kaelen added, his voice taking on a lower, almost placating edge. "You run this pack better than anyone. You will keep your title, your quarters, and your authority over the estate. Virella will simply live as my second mate."
A quiet gasp rippled through the few guards standing by the doorway.
To share a title. To share a home. To sit at the head table and watch her mate feed another woman the child she had prayed to carry herself.
Rowena looked at Kaelen. Really looked at him. The golden hair, the sharp, arrogant jawline, the eyes that looked at her not as a woman he loved, but as an efficient piece of furniture that kept his house running smoothly.
The three years of exhaustion, the sleepless nights, the quiet sacrifices—it all collapsed inside her, leaving behind a silence so cold it felt like ice.
Slowly, Rowena reached up to her neck. Her fingers caught the silver chain of the Luna Seal—the heavy, engraved medallion Kaelen had placed around her neck the day he took the Alpha throne.
"Rowena, don't be dramatic," Kaelen muttered, his brow creasing with irritation. "We have a pack to lead. Be reasonable."
Rowena didn't say a word. With a smooth, sudden jerk, she snapped the silver chain.
The metal link popped, and the heavy seal hit the marble floor with a sharp, echoing clack, rolling until it stopped right at Kaelen’s leather boot.
Kaelen froze, staring down at the silver disk as if it were a venomous snake. "What are you doing?"
"I am resigning my position," Rowena said, her voice clear, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "And I am severing the mate bond."
"You can't sever a bond without my consent!" Kaelen snapped, a surge of aggressive Alpha aura flaring around him. "You belong to Crestfall!"
Rowena closed her eyes. Deep within her chest, where the faint, tethered hum of Kaelen’s soul resided, she didn't fight or push. She simply let go.
A sharp, violent crack resonated inside her spirit—like a frozen branch snapping under heavy snow. Kaelen stumbled back a full step, gasping for air as his hand flew to his chest, his face draining of all color as the mate bond died instantly between them.
When Rowena opened her eyes, the dull brown hue of her pupils was gone. In its place burned a faint, terrifying shade of dark violet shadow.
She turned her back on him, walked over to the side table, and picked up her simple wool traveling cloak.
"Rowena! Stop!" Kaelen roared, his voice laced with the heavy weight of the Alpha Command.
The command hit her back like a wave of physical force, designed to bend her knees and force her to obey. But the shadow magic living beneath Rowena's skin flared outward, absorbing the command like dust in the wind. She didn't even slow down.
She pushed open the side exit leading to the outer courtyard, stepping out into the freezing, pouring rain.
"Rowena!" Kaelen’s boots pounded on the stone behind her as he rushed out into the courtyard, his clothes soaking in seconds. "You walk out those gates and you have nowhere to go! No pack will take a discarded female! You'll freeze before midnight!"
Rowena stopped near the iron gates of the outer perimeter. She didn't turn around to look at his desperate, furious face.
"I won't freeze, Kaelen," she whispered into the wind.
From the tree line bordering the north gorge, the shadows began to twist. The rain stopped falling around the gate, suspended mid-air as a suffocating, ancient pressure rolled over the mountain pass.
Heavy, iron-clad boots crunched against the wet gravel. Out of the darkness stepped a man whose very presence made the rain freeze into mist—Alpha Cassian of the Nightshade Sovereign.
Cassian didn't look at Kaelen. His glowing violet eyes fixed entirely on Rowena, his broad hand extending toward her through the dark rain.
"You took long enough, little raven," Cassian rumbled softly.
Chapter 2
The rain didn't touch her.
As Rowena stepped through the rusted iron gates of Crestfall, a faint, dark barrier diverted the freezing downpour away from her shoulders. The water struck the translucent shadow-veil and slid harmlessly to the mud below, pooling around her worn boots.
Behind her, Kaelen’s shouting slowly faded into the howling storm. His voice—usually so full of arrogant command— sounded thin and desperate as he shouted her name, demanding her immediate return, threatening retribution, and invoking ancient pack laws that had lost all meaning the second he betrayed her. She didn't look back once. Turning around meant acknowledging three long years of wasted devotion, sleepless nights, and quiet sacrifices for a man who viewed her as little more than a convenient steward. Right now, her chest was entirely numb, wrapped in a cold, merciful stillness.
Alpha Cassian stood waiting beside a heavy, silver-embossed carriage idling at the edge of the pine treelin
