Chapter 1 - White Moon Pack
~ The loss of life, in mate and in child, will find misery and fear. The loss of faith, in our goddess and herself, will find love hard to master. The loss of confidence, in wolves and in humans, will find the world on its tipping point. What was lost may yet be found and what is found may yet be lost. The fate of all wolves lies in the hands of what's written in the stars. ~
"Venus Sarafina?" My name was called by the secretary who had a large clip board in her hands.
"Yes, I'm here." I answer. She was a pleasant enough woman. Long blonde hair and short like me. Her simple pencil skirt and white blouse hugged her curves in a way that made me wonder whose attention she was trying to get.
I got up from the bench I had been waiting on and joined her by the security door that would take me deeper into the packhouse.
"I go by Vena, by the way. It's a little easier." My full name was quite the mouthful.
"Oh yes, I do see that on your application. Thank you for the reminder. My name is Lori. I'll be escorting you to the Alpha's waiting room. I'll let him know you're here. And this," she said, handing me a clipboard with more paperwork on it. "is for you. I know it's a lot to fill out, but thankfully you're a bit early so you should be able to get all of it done before he's ready for you."
I take the additional paperwork, wishing I could roll my eyes and burn it instead. But today was about making a good impression.
With a dry chuckle I tell her "Never enough paperwork huh, Lori?"
She chuckles back at me "You should see all the file rooms. You would think we would have gone through half the forests remaining in werewolf territory to get all that paper."
I liked her. She got it. "Right this way Vena." She smiled at me and waved me through the door. I follow her down the hallways. We wind through the office sector of the packhouse and up to the third floor. Once we reach the top, there is a large waiting room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking a section of the pack community. I could see everyone waking up. Spouses heading off to work and children going to school. I looked away from the window, feeling my heart get heavier.
"Take your time with the paperwork." She gave me a wink as she blocked her mouth on one side with her hand. "Alpha Jordan doesn't usually read it anyways." She told me with a fake whisper. The door shut behind her and I was alone in the waiting room. I took a seat near the door I had just come through, my back to the wall. You would think there would be dozens of people who would wait on the Alpha for the size of this waiting room. I look around at all of the lush leather chairs and end tables with flowers on them. There were images of forests and previous Alphas hanging on the walls. There was a large door made of dark wood that was on the opposite side of the room. Being the only door here, I assumed it would lead to the Alpha's office.
I quickly went through the paperwork. It was a lot of repeat questions from the application. Why you left your old pack, why you wanted to rejoin a pack, what your skills are, total number of occupants, so on and so forth. I filled everything out and then put my pen down and waited.
Waiting in silence was once a simple task. I hate waiting rooms. The quiet grated on my nerves. My leg started to get jittery. I had to stop myself because I was afraid the Alpha would hear me from his office. I knew very little about the present Alpha's of packs in the area. So much had changed for our kind in the last few years.
When humans discovered our existence, it was the beginning of a war. The human government and our leading Alpha's held a meeting to introduce themselves and try to reach an understanding for peace. While everything went well in the meeting between those select few in power, not everyone felt the same.
Small fights would escalate into entire packs being attacked, or a wolf getting angry and hurting several people. While the later wouldn't be nearly as severe, the human government expected the harshest punishments for injury to their own kind, while our packs being wiped out was not their problem.
With us starting to integrate between the species, many Alpha's would let their people go to get education or travel. You could also leave a pack if your mate was human. It was something no one had ever considered possible, and yet it was becoming more common. Wolves finding their mates among humans, as if a human could ever understand the mate bond. I had such an unfortunate fate and left my old pack to live with my human mate.
Thankfully, the door to the Alpha's office opened before my thoughts got too far along that road.
"Good morning." His voice was firm, but not unfriendly. What caught me off guard was his size. The man was nearing seven feet tall, his muscles so profound and defined, it looked like he worked out 24/7 to obtain such an intense physique. As if his size wasn't enough, he radiated powerful Alpha energy like none other I had met. I was glad I was here in peace, because otherwise I would run scared shitless by his powerful aura alone.
"Good morning, Alpha." I returned his greeting with a slight bow of my head. It was customary, especially since I was not yet part of this pack.
"No need to bow your head. I don't encourage such formalities." He turned and waved me over to follow him. I felt like I had to run to try and catch him. Not even reaching five feet myself, it was a chore keeping up with his long legs.
I followed him into his office. He also had floor to ceiling windows along the wall shared with the waiting room. His large desk was positioned in the center of the room. There was a simple warmth to his space. He didn't add to the space with decorations or art. It was clean cut, almost military, and yet still felt welcoming.
He sat in his large chair behind the desk and motioned to the chair for me to sit. I took my seat in yet another plush leather chair, handing him the clipboard with additional paperwork I had just filled out.
"Ah, yes, the additional paperwork." He looked at it briefly flipping through the pages. I kept my focus on keeping my leg from bouncing around. He was going through the pages so fast I doubt he even read anything.
"I'll be honest Venus Sarafina, I don't really read this paperwork but it is required." He set the paperwork off to the side. "I prefer to hear it straight from you. So tell me, why do you want to join the White Moon Pack."
"Of course, Alpha. I'm looking to restart my life. I was living outside of a pack for almost 15 years, but no longer have those ties. I want to go back to living with a pack, be close to our own kind."
His eyes stared into mine with intensity, listening to my response.
"Certainly understandable. What ties brought you to living outside of your pack?"
While I knew he was going to ask such a question, I really did not want to answer it. Thats why I was here. To leave my past behind me. "My mate turned out to be a human. I had chosen to live with him."
The Alpha squinted his eyes at me, clearly expecting an explanation. I broke our eye contact and stared at my hands in my lap. "He died just a few weeks ago." His tone shifted immediately.
"I'm so sorry Venus. I would never want anyone to lose their mate."
Despite the pain my mate Carter had caused me, it never changed the effect of the mate bond. My heart was wrenched when I said those words. I felt like I lost all the air in my lungs and I could feel tears beginning to form in my eyes.
I looked back at the Alpha. "I appreciate your sympathy, Alpha. And I usually just go by Vena." I mentioned my nickname to try and change the subject.
"Of course Vena. Next question I have for you, what pack were you part of previously? Is there a reason you did not rejoin them?"
I couldn’t catch a break.
"My previous pack was the Starry Crest pack. Shortly after I left to live with my newfound mate, the entire pack was murdered by a group of irate humans."
This time he looked away before I did and grabbed the paperwork. I waited as he did a more thorough read through, flipping the pages one at a time. I saw his eyes sadden again. He probably read the medical records. I had one miscarriage and was put in psychiatric hold after I lost my mate and daughter. He finished the paperwork and set it off to the side.
"Vena, I would be glad to welcome you to your new home as a member of our pack. I just want to know who best to place you with. Can you tell me a bit more about your skills? Perhaps what kind of work you did during your time... with the humans." He paused, trying to phrase things so as not to bring up more painful memories.
"My mate only wanted me as a housewife, so I have not worked for a while. He was a leader in a large military company, so he was never in want of money and instead wanted someone at home to take care of everything else."
"Well, with my limited knowledge, that doesn't seem like you." He said with a small smile. I gladly accepted the change of tone and gave him a small smile back.
"You would be correct, Alpha." I gave some thought as to how to explain my previous life in my pack. It felt like such a long time ago now. "My background from my pack is a warrior. I was trained in a special type of task force focusing on investigation. I also was a lead researcher for poisons and the like in use with combat. Of course, I participated in regular training as well. I was also the Luna's first command and led our troops many times." Aging was not the same for wolves and humans. To my mate, I was a beautiful young 20 year old when we met. When in reality, I was now nearing 50 with a full life under my belt.
The Alpha's eyes widened. "Hold on a second, you mean to tell me you are the tiny she-wolf from the Starry Crest pack? The one even my own men were terrified of for your battle sense and seemingly magical senses to know their next move?" He had leaned forward and was eager for my response.
I chuckled lightly. "You seem familiar with my work Alpha. While I do not recall fighting your pack in particular."
"Oh, we never had any issues with the Starry Crest pack. Many packs are crossed with members of several different packs these days. I've heard the stories from them. Did you really develop something that could keep your wolf caged, forcing someone to stay in their human form?" He looked like a kid in a candy shop asking to hear old battles stories.
I laughed for the first time in a long time. This giant of an alpha was so excited to hear about little old me and my time in battles.
"Your sources are correct Alpha. Hopefully they were not as skilled as my team though, or they would know the components as well."
"Don't think I need it anyway. I have the creator right in front of me! You know you are a legend right? You made the Starry Crest pack one of the most powerful forces in our time."
There was a somber moment that passed between us. Because despite our power as the Starry Crest pack, as soon as I left, they were brought to their knees and buried 6ft underground.
Thankfully the Alpha picked up on it right away and kept us moving.
"Well then, why don't we get you paired up with my Beta. I think the two of you will get along great." During my application, it was noted that I would be paired with someone for introduction to the pack. After a probationary introduction period of one week, I would be officially introduced as a new member of the pack. In times past, it was a huge celebration to welcome a new pack member, born or added like me. Due to how common it was now with the remaining packs, it was a much simpler event. Usually it is a dinner in the packhouse.
"I trust your judgment, Alpha." I bowed my head again. He started to stand, and I followed suit.
"I'll take you for a quick tour of the pack house and show you where you will be staying. After that, we will meet my Beta on the training grounds. I think you and Denver will get along great." I followed him out of his office and back towards the secretary’s desk where I met Lori. It seemed I was being accepted into the pack for now. I felt a small bit of tension fade away as I followed the Alpha's broad back, jogging lightly to keep up with his long strides.
Chapter 2 - Introductions
The packhouse was quite impressive. Three floors throughout the building. The offices existed on one side, where the visitor/business entrance was.
Our tour took us through the common area. It was high ceilings that took up all three floors. There was a kitchen area that was built to be a chefs dream. There were multiple areas for everyone. A game area, lounge area, even charging stations and individual work from home stations. Much needed with advanced hearing.
We crossed the area as Alpha Jordan explained they had rebuilt after a rogue attack just a couple of years ago. I never received any news of packs once I left, but I was surprised rogues held so much power.
He had one of the pack members help me with my belongings and bring them to the room that had been made ready. I didn't have much, as I left almost everything behind after my family's death. One duffle bag with necessities was all I had been traveling with.
The man who helped was nice enough. He in
