Chapter 1. The Outcast—Ominous

Prologue

←««^»»→

“I think I love him—”

“You what?” Charlotte swallowed hard.

“You are utterly crazy, Ivy! Are you even listening to yourself? Didn't you say that Axel isn't human? Besides, you just saw him turn into a wolf and kill Lilly!” Charlotte asked, her heart racing.

She had seen something doomed, something that was going to sabotage Ivy's life, but love had turned her into an empty shell.

Meanwhile, Ivy chuckled bitterly, “Yes I did but—”

However, Charlotte interrupted, “But what? You are utterly screwed, Ivy. The same man caused you so much pain, killed your parents, kept so many dirty secrets from you, and now you still want to sleep with him and fight for—”

“I don't know exactly what to say, Charlotte. I—” Ivy trailed off, nibbling her soft lips bitterly.

Charlotte condemned, stressing every phrase, “Don't you ever say that I never warned you, Ivy! Now that his dead wolf–girlfriend is back from the grave, he'll surely kick you out of his life. Trust me, you won't like the consequences!”

“Axel can't leave me—”

Ivy tried to explain, but Charlotte interrupted, “Only in your dreams! If he had the guts to kill your parents, what makes you think that you are better anyway?”

“I'm scared—” she shivered.

“You should be scared! He once abandoned his wolf girlfriend, his luna, his first love. Trust me, the thing between you isn't even real! He just used you to bring her back so, he'll snub you like leprosy!”

For over a century, Axel Marx had lived in dark secrets; dark enough to make you feel horrified. Until now, no one seemed to understand him; nor will you. And for a better reason, it's better not to.

To him, every day was inauspicious. Every sunrise, things seemed preposterous—crazy enough to make him feel antsy or menaced. Or, perhaps, jinxed for no better reason.

Whatever...

Or perhaps lost, scrambling to find himself where he never belonged. Like any other day, he woke up spooked, hyperventilating, and his chest felt heavy. For over a century, he kept reminding himself that he would never fit in.

Where?

Chicago. Yeah, the only pillar that stood between his beatitude and blues was here. However, that wasn't enough to demystify why he felt so edgy—lost, I mean.

Chapter 1. The Outcast—Ominous

←««^»»→

Lost in the morning cold air, suddenly Ivy's aunt's voice echoed from the kitchen, “What an indolent generation we have!”

“ Ivy? You are asleep as if you graduated yesterday!”

She was used to the morning controversies over her oversleeping. However, on most nights, she never winked. Ivy always had something disturbing her peace.

As her voice pierced through the door faintly, it reminded her of the promised she had made to Charlotte. Without hesitation, she hopped out of the bed, brushed her teeth bristly and ran downstairs, holding her backpack.

Disregarding glancing at the fifty-something-year-old Magdalene in the kitchen perhaps chewing her morning, weird salad, she hissed, “My goodness! I'm sorry I overslept, Auntie. I don't have time for breakfast—”

Her aunt was a woman of character. Though aging, thin and almost withering away, she really treasured family relations.

“Again? But, Ivy, you can't consistently shun my breakfast. You really need to stay healthy, and—”

“Don't worry, please. I'll grab something at the academy canteen,” Ivy excused herself briskly.

Before Magdalene could debate, she plunged a brief kiss on her forehead and rushed away.

“That's not enough though—”

“I know. Charlotte promised to pick me up at the stage. I can't keep her waiting forever. Bye, honey.”

“Ivy—?”

Without giving her a chance to debate, Ivy banged the door behind her and left.

Outside the house, she abruptly hesitated, stared at her parents' deserted house at the edge of the compound for a while, and smirked bitterly.

As she rapidly strolled out of the gate, her empty stomach suddenly felt cold. Unexpected anxiety tormented her.

She could discern that something portentous was about to happen. Everything seemed tranquil, but ominous. The quietude inflated her heart with trepidation.

She could feel the desolation, the sheer heavy pounding of her heart. Everything seemed to be watching her drown.

Indeed, something was spying her movements. When she lifted her terrified eyes through the tall cedar woods to the sky, she noticed it wasn't typically blue, rather dark and opaque; like a grand, formidable eye watching her.

Roaming her glances all over, she spotted something; something dark and sinister standing on top of the longest branches. It seemed like an owl watching her fate. She had seen it a million times, that one seemed distinctive— perhaps doomed.

It was weighty; large enough to make her feel hysterical. She could feel the thirsty in it's claws and the appetite to feed on her in it's edgy beak. Then the dark, massive, round eyes watched her as if she were it's prey.

Before she realized what was going on, she was in her Charlotte's car, panting and lost in thought. Fragments of the menacing owl kept her body sensitive, tingling and frightened.

“Screech!”

“Bang!”

“What the hell was that?” Ivy Scarlet asked, looking at an old-looking, caliginous, inauspicious owl, which had just crashed on the car's windscreen. She had seen it a few minutes ago.

“I don't know! Perhaps a creepy bird or something—!” exclaimed Charlotte, her heart throbbing energetically.

“That ill-fated bird... I think I saw it in the woods and it was looking at me wildly. Perhaps it's direful and—”

“It's nothing, honey, okay? You won't always be freaked by cranky nightmares, sweetheart. It's just a bird!” Charlotte interjected, trying to convince her with a forced grin.

To her astonishment, the owl flew away, soaring up unharmed! Neither it's wings feeble nor fractured.

But how?

Meanwhile, Ivy crouched, her heart racing. She couldn't believe it was coming! After all, they had to be at school before getting late. With that, Charlotte quickly drove away, leaving the owl landing on the road sign post.

As soon as they got out of it's range, Ivy suddenly felt at peace. Though, she couldn't smile and still felt perturbed. Besides, why would she waste her fabulous day thinking of a mere, creepy bird?

Axel Marx rolled his eyes reluctantly on the long woods. He had heard something; something daring.

Soon after, an old owl crashed on the dead leaves, making him shift his head reflexively.

Oh, it was just a bird.

After seeing it, he felt relaxed and dropped his eyes to the bloody limb on his hands. Meanwhile, he suddenly felt remorseful. He never meant to hunt the antelope, but the thirst had forced him.

Of course, he was aghasted, but not as much as the craving had compelled him to stalk it. Nevertheless, he had gratified his evil thirst; his infinite craving for blood.

After doing away with the bloody limb, he stood beneath the tall woods, morning sunlight embracing his remorseful face. His eyes were green and his canines sharp and elongated.

In human clothes, Axel Marx looked precisely like a typical student; a normal human being born of a woman.

However, he wasn't human, perhaps an outcast, ominous... Or perhaps something that was going to destroy many lives.

Nor was he to become merely a student at Pristine Alpha Academy. Perhaps, he was something unique—something odd. He had lived for over a century, and yet he still looked young and energetic.

Suddenly his phone buzzed.

Chapter 2. Breaking The Rules

A call from the academy administration office reminded him of where he was supposed to be. He'd chose his path wisely by requesting for a new beginnings. It had to be his first step, his first joy.

He never expected to be seen; not even by the bird–brained owl, especially when hunting. He wanted to be an echo, a vestige—doing his thing in the shadows.

After smirking his bloodstained lips attempting to cover the suspicion, he cleansed his bloody hands in the river and ingenuously mounted towards the road. He never wanted to leave any moves questionable.

Meanwhile, guilty slammed into his heart. He earnestly wished to live a typical, human-like life but the vicious, dark craving kept yanking him back.

Back to what?

Back to his old self; back to the bloody life. Back to what felt like home. What had even persuaded him to show his face from his hideout?

Wasn't that breaking the
