Annotation
On the night of the full moon—the night I discovered Lucas was my mate—I found him in bed with my best friend. Just the night before, he had slept with me. In her presence, he rejected me without hesitation. Broken and humiliated, I thought things couldn’t get worse—I knew I can’t let my parents find out I was in a relationship with their biggest enemy’s son. With nothing left, I ran. I left my town, my past, and everything I once knew, determined to rebuild my life. When I discovered I was pregnant, I made a vow: I would never look back. Years passed. In a new city, with a new life, I raised my son alone. But I never truly moved on from Lucas—the man who broke me. When my abusive ex-boyfriend tracked me down and threatened everything I had built, I knew I had to protect my son at all costs. I had no one to turn to. Except him. Lucas. He offered me a deal: pretend to be his girlfriend to help him secure a major business deal, and in return, he’d give me the resources I needed to protect myself and my son. He also promised me something else—before the deal ends, he would make me his. I didn’t want to accept. I didn’t want to trust him. But I had no choice. A part of me still belonged to him… but I’ll make sure he doesn’t win me back so easily.
Chapter 1
The nightmare still haunts me until date, the man I have ever loved, he told me he will do anything for me and I guess he didn’t mean any of it, when two people you care about the most betray you, you are left to not trusting anyone again.
The night came to me every single day, it was the same as always, the fifth of the month, the day we were all brought together to be mated.
My mind wandered off to that lovely memory that started the night.
“Lucas what are doing?” I whispered when he softly held my hand, and he pulled me toward the other side, his eyes met mine and he smiled. “We can’t let them get suspicious until it’s all over.”
“I could not bear watching you talk to David.” Lucas said, he had always been possessive, in his blue suit, he didn’t have to worry about me ever looking at any man. “You look beautiful, it’s going to be a horrible night.” He stated and I nodded.
Yes it was, today we were about to tell our parents we wanted to be with each other, we accepted each other as mates and rejected whoever the moon goddess granted us.
Lucas and I have been going out for six months now, and it’s being our secret, it was hard, but we knew we wanted it.
His eyes dance across the place when we both heard footsteps coming toward us.
“Hide.” I whispered to him, and he nodded, he hid behind the drapes and in a few seconds, my mom came into view; she glanced across the place like she was suspicious of me.
“Mama.” I smiled, I didn’t dare look at the drapes Lucas was hiding behind.
“You need to come with me, it’s starting.” She said, and I smiled, holding my hand, she led me into the room.
It was filled with the most elite werewolves across the city, with my parents who were considered to have the strongest and most powerful pack, and I was their only daughter.
I stood beside my mom and Lucas and his parents came into view and suddenly Brie rushed to me.
“Are you anxious.” Brie whispered, she was the only one who knew about us.
“Yes, don’t let Mama hear about it.” I mumbled against my breath; I watched as we were all headed into the garden, where it will all be done.
This is where many relationships have been sealed and destroyed, and I guess this was where mine would be destroyed.
The way Lucas looked at me, all night, I had thought I was the one in his heart, I had thought he will do anything to be with me, but he didn’t, I watched as all the parents left the room so it will start.
We danced, and we ate, and we waited, I could hear some people talking when they got their mate and I waited for mine, I waited as the moon goddess granted me the one wish I always asked her for.
My heart skipped a beat and I could feel my wolf dancing with happiness, my eyes met Lucas, and the way he looked at me, for the first time I could see his wolf in his eyes, I could see the dark-skinned wolf that was one of the strongest in the city, and he smiled at me.
The sensation of happiness filled my body, my wolf called out of him and I could hear his wolf calling out to me, it did feel like he was heading toward me, but he was not because in a second, I could not see him again.
“Lucas.” I called out, walking my way out of the place, there were a lot of people here and Lucas was not in sight, what did he think he was doing, we had to tell our parents, this is what we have planned for as long as we can remember.
That night, my happiness soon turned into sorrow, my mind was occupied with darkness and sorrow and all I could think about finding the man that I thought loved me, he was not here.
I could still recall how my heart skipped, how I cried and how I went around looking and searching for him, and I didn’t find him, when my parents came back out, I lied to them, I told them this year was not mine, maybe another year I will find my mate.
That night was like a nightmare, when I found him in bed with Brie, my eyes filled with tears, and they didn’t know I was there, when he did, he didn’t look at me, I called out to him and I begged him to talk to me.
I begged him, I could still hear the desperation in my voice every night.
“Lucas.” I whispered to him as he was still in bed with her. “Lucas, please tell me what the hell is going on.” I asked, and he didn’t care, and she didn’t seem to care either.
I headed out of the room and I waited out, by the time they came out, they were both dressed and my parents had the worst timing by heading toward the hallway too, I couldn’t cry in their presence.
That night, what Lucas did to me was one I could never forget, his words still echoed in my mind as he took away everything from me, my true self, my family, and my home.
“I reject you, Rachel Elizabeth Blackwood, I reject your true self and I reject being mates with you.” Those words still stings to me, it felt like a nightmare and my parents rejoiced because I would rather be dead than for them to allow me to be mated with someone like him.
He accepted the woman I always thought I could trust, my best friend Brie, she was like a sister and I saw the way she smiled, like she planned it all a long.
That night was the last day I saw him, because of him, I lied to my parents, after that, I had to leave, my home was not mine anymore, and I was not safe.
Chapter 2
The alarm rings loudly, making me curse out a word I would never use, I wasted no time in leaving the bed and heading to my son’s bed, it’s been five years and I still have the same nightmare, my head was pounding with pain when I rushed to his room to wake him up for school.
This was our routine all day, he would not want to wake up, I will force him, and then he will have to, that’s what we did today, we always settled in the living room while he watched a cartoon, we got everything ready early today.
By the time I got him to school, I left for work, I had a smile on my face as I worked when I heard a loud noise coming from outside my little bakery, living a life here was hard, though I have been here for five years, it just got harder with time.
Because I was treated like a normal wolf, I didn’t use my last name or my middle name, I couldn’t let them find me, I won’t let them.
“What are you doing?” I asked the man standing outside the bakery, it was a l
