Chapter 1

The Hunt

The forest under the moonlight.)

Ivy Thorne moved silently through the forest, her every sense heightened. The earthy scent of pine filled her lungs as she stopped at a clearing, her fingers brushing the blade at her side. A flicker of pale light caught her eye.

“A vampire,” she thought, her pulse steady but tense.

The shadows shifted. A voice, smooth and mocking, broke the silence.

Vampire: “Are you really going to face me alone, werewolf?” Ivy: (stepping forward, voice steady) “Afraid of a challenge, vampire?”

The emerged from the darkness, calm and poised. He wasn’t like the others Ivy had fought—there was a dangerous grace about him.

Lucian: “Bold of you to come alone.”

Ivy: (lifting her chin) “Bold, or prepared. I’ve hunted your kind before.”

Lucian: (smiling faintly) “I’m not like them.”

Ivy’s fingers tightened around her blade. The tension between them was palpable.

Lucian: “I’m here for answers. My kind are being hunted. Your pack is responsible.” Ivy: (bristling) “We only defend ourselves. Your kind came unprovoked.” Vampire: (eyes narrowing) “Or perhaps your pack just wants to start a war.”

The accusation lingered, but before Ivy could respond, the vampire stepped back into the shadows. Vampire: “Ivy, isn’t it? I’ll see you again.”

He disappeared, leaving Ivy with more questions than answers.

(The pack’s camp.)

Ivy returned to camp to find Selena waiting by the bonfire. Her alpha’s piercing gaze met hers immediately.

Selena: “You’re back early. Did you run into trouble?”. Ivy: (keeping her voice steady) “Nothing I couldn’t handle.” Selena: (sharp tone) “I sensed a vampire near the borders. Did you eliminate him?”

Ivy hesitated. Ivy: “He wasn’t like the others. He didn’t attack. He was searching for something.” Selena: (frowning) “And you let him go?”

The weight of Selena’s disapproval pressed down on Ivy. Ivy: “We don’t know how many vampires are out there. I didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention.” Selena: (voice firm) “Vampires are our enemies.

One moment of hesitation can cost lives. Don’t let curiosity become a weakness.” Selena placed a hand on Ivy’s shoulder, her tone softening. Selena: “You’re one of our strongest fighters. Don’t let anything—or anyone—make you forget that.” Ivy nodded, but Selena’s words stayed with her long after the conversation ended.

The Dream

( Ivy’s cabin.)

That night, Ivy dreamed of the vampire. He stood in the moonlight, watching her with dark, unreadable eyes.

Ethan (in the dream): “Why did you let me live?”

Ivy woke with a start, her heart racing. She couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was about to change. ---

(The forest clearing, dawn.)

Drawn by a familiar scent, Ivy returned to the clearing. He was there, leaning against a tree, waiting.

Ivy: (coolly) “You’re persistent. Most vampires have better sense than to come back.” Ethan: (smirking) “And yet here you are, as if you were waiting for me.” She glared at him, determined not to show weakness. Ivy: “Why did you come back?”

Ethan: (softly) “Because I needed to know why you didn’t kill me.” His question struck a nerve. Ivy’s loyalty to her pack warred with the strange connection she felt toward him. Ivy: (hesitant) “I don’t know. Maybe I wanted answers.”

Ethan stepped closer, his gaze unrelenting.

Ethan: “Then let me help you find them.” He reached out, and Ivy didn’t pull away. His fingers brushed her cheek, cool and unfamiliar, yet it sent warmth spiraling through her.

They stood like that, suspended in a moment of fragile peace. For the first time, Ivy wondered if there could be another path—one she hadn’t dared to see before.

Ivy...

As Ivy returned to her cabin, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her encounter with Ethan had marked the beginning of something dangerous, something she couldn’t yet understand.

Ivy (internal): I don’t know what I believe anymore, but I know my world is about to change.

The vampire encampment lay deep within a rocky hollow, hidden from the prying eyes of wolves and humans alike. The air here was thick with tension, a quiet unease among those who called it home.

Ethan moved with purpose, his long coat brushing the ashen ground as he entered the heart of the camp.

A cluster of vampires turned to watch him, their faces a mixture of wariness and curiosity.

Among them was Lucian, his second-in-command, a wiry figure with sharp features and a permanent smirk. “You’re late,” Lucian remarked, leaning casually against a jagged boulder.

“Did the little wolves give you trouble?”

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he strode past Lucien and into a dimly lit tent at the center of the camp.

The interior was sparse, save for a wooden table covered in maps and documents. He poured himself a glass of bloodwine from a decanter and took a measured sip before finally responding. “They’re watching the borders more closely,” he said evenly. Lucian followed him inside, his smirk fading slightly. “You don’t look like someone who just slipped past a pack of wolves.

You look… distracted.” Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“I met one of them.” “Let me guess,” Lucian drawled,

“young, headstrong, probably itching to prove herself?” Ethan’s silence was answer enough.

Lucian chuckled, shaking his head. “Tell me you didn’t spare her,” Lucian said, his tone half-joking, half-serious.

Ethan’s gaze snapped to his, cold and unyielding. “I don’t kill needlessly.”

“Needlessly?” Lucian echoed, his smirk returning. “Their kind would never show us the same mercy.”

“I’m not interested in a blood feud,” Ethan said firmly, setting his glass down. “I want answers, not corpses.”

Lucian folded his arms, his expression skeptical. “And did this little wolf give you any answers?”

Ethan’s mind drifted back to Ivy—her defiance, her unwavering stance despite the danger she faced.

“No,” he admitted, his voice quieter. “But she’s… different.”

“Different?” Lucien repeated, raising an eyebrow.

“Different how? Please don’t tell me you’re about to romanticize a wolf.”

Ethan shot him a warning look.

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Lucian raised his hands in mock surrender.

“Hey, I’m just saying. We’ve all seen what happens when lines get crossed.” Ethan ignored him, turning back to the maps spread across the table. His fingers traced a line along the marked borders of Blackwater.

“Something doesn’t add up,” he muttered, more to himself than to Lucian.

“They’re too organized, too calculated. Wolves don’t hunt like this—not unless someone’s pulling the strings.” Lucian stepped closer, his interest piqued. “You think the alpha’s hiding something?”

“Maybe,” Ethan said, his eyes narrowing.

“Or maybe there’s more to this war than they’re letting on.”

Lucian studied him for a moment, then sighed. “You know, for someone who claims he doesn’t want a blood feud, you’re getting awfully close to starting one.” Ethan’s lips curved into a faint smile, humorless and sharp. “Not if I find the truth first.” Lucian shook his head, muttering under his breath as he left the tent.

Alone, Ethan leaned over the table, his thoughts returning once again to Ivy.

Her name lingered on his mind, unwelcome but persistent.

For the first time in years, a flicker of doubt crept into his resolve. “Who are you, Ivy Thorne?” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the crackle of the campfire outside.

Chapter 2

Days had passed since Ivy’s encounter with Ethan, yet her mind refused to settle. His piercing gaze lingered in her thoughts, and the tension between them felt impossible to ignore. Frustrated, she threw herself into rigorous training, determined to shake off her unease. One evening, as she returned to the pack’s grounds, an unusual tension hung in the air. Her packmates were gathered in hushed conversation, their chatter ceasing the moment she approached.

Ivy’s instincts kicked in as she scanned the uneasy faces around her.

“What’s going on?” she asked, her voice sharp.

Micah, one of the senior pack members, hesitated before replying.

“It’s Selena. She left last night. Took her weapons… hasn’t come back.”

Ivy’s stomach twisted.

Selena, their alpha, was never reckless, and she never left without notifying someone.

“Did she say why she was leaving?”

Micah exchanged a glance with Nora, another packmate, before answering.

“No. But…
