Eloise believed she would find happiness in the arms of Alpha Alexis-the Alpha who saved and helped her pack in exchange for her hand in marriage. She chose to go with Alexis, thinking he would offer the happiness she desired. But she was gravely mistaken when he locked her away in the pack house and treated her as nothing more than his plaything. No one knew the truth about what was happening between Eloise and Alexis. To everyone else, they appeared to be a blissful pair of chosen mates. That's why the pack was shocked when news broke of Alpha Alexis's murder-and the accused were three men who had been involved in scandals with Eloise. There was Emrys Moore, the immortal who deeply admired Eloise for the novels she had written. Cassiel Lewis, the strongest gamma of the Stormsong pack and Eloise's childhood friend. And Dristan Wright, the young Alpha honored throughout Gazina as a prodigy. Did the three really kill Eloise's Alpha? And if so, what motive could they have had for the murder?
CHAPTER 01: GOODBYE
CHAPTER 01: GOODBYE
It was the last time Eloise would see the man she loved. She wouldn't be able to gaze upon Emrys' mesmerizing golden eyes that glimmered even more brightly under the sun or his silver hair reminiscent of freshly fallen snow on the first day of December. She would no longer admire his perfectly sculpted nose or those crimson lips that always captured her attention.
"You're going to melt me with that stare, Eloise," Emrys teased, his voice carrying a playful warmth as they sat face-to-face in the library. They were by the large arched window, which framed the breathtaking autumn scenery outside. The golden-orange hues of the season painted the world in a soft, nostalgic glow.
"I'm going to miss you," Eloise admitted, her voice tinged with sadness. "This is probably the last time we'll see each other." She didn't bother hiding her emotions—this was their final moment together, after all. But no matter how much she longed to confess her feelings, the words just wouldn't come.
"And why is that?" Emrys smirked, leaning slightly closer. "Your future husband won't let you out of the house? You're just here for work, Eloise. It's not like you'd be cheating on him with me, right?" His teasing tone and playful grin made her heart race. This—this was exactly why she had fallen for him.
"You don't know him," she replied. "That man is horrible. There's no way he'd ever let me do the things I want." Her thoughts drifted back to Alexis, the man she despised more than anyone else in the world—and the man she was destined to marry. What kind of luck was this? Out of all people, it had to be him, her mortal enemy.
Eloise was just an ordinary mortal, a stark contrast to the werewolves who had taken her in at the Stormsong Pack. She had been very young when her parents died, and it was Alpha Leonard who rescued her, raising her as his own within the pack that eventually became her second family.
Despite being human, the entire pack embraced her, treating her as one of their own. She was welcomed into the Alpha's family and grew up surrounded by love and acceptance. But everything changed when a brutal conflict broke out between the Stormsong Pack and the Blood River Pack. The war left Stormsong deeply indebted to the Greengale Pack, led by Alpha Alexis, who had provided crucial support during their time of need.
"Why didn't you refuse? And why does it have to be you?" Emrys asked, flipping a page in his favorite book—the one he didn't know Eloise had written herself.
"He's been trying to claim me from the pack for a long time now," Eloise replied with a heavy sigh, resting her chin in her hand. Her gaze wandered to the maple trees outside, their vibrant leaves slowly falling, painting the earth in shades of red and gold. "Alpha Leonard kept refusing him, but Alexis still found a way to make it happen."
"Can't your pack say no?" Emrys asked, his amber eyes flickering with concern as he looked at Eloise. For a moment, he couldn't help but admire the beauty before him, her features glowing softly in the autumn light.
"No. The pack we're up against is too powerful," Eloise resignedly said. "Honestly, don't be surprised if you see my face on the news someday." She shifted her gaze toward Emrys, catching him off guard. Startled, Emrys quickly lowered his head, pretending to focus on his book while hiding the emotions swirling in his eyes.
"Want me to run away with you?" Emrys offered his voice a mix of jest and sincerity. "Marry me instead."
Eloise's eyes widened in shock, her heart skipping a beat. But Emrys kept his head bowed, his attention seemingly on the book before him. For a fleeting moment, she wished his words were true, that he could truly be her escape. But deep down, she knew it was nothing more than an impossible dream.
Eloise and Emrys had known each other for two years, and their conversations and encounters were confined to the library. Yet despite those years, Eloise barely knew anything about him—not his full name, his origins, or even his birthday. The only thing she was certain of was that Emrys was her first and most loyal reader, who had tirelessly supported her novels from the beginning.
"Hahaha, you don't even know me that well, and you want to marry me?" Eloise laughed, a hint of irony in her voice. Unbeknownst to Emrys, they shared a similar secret. He had no idea she was the author of every book he repeatedly devoured in the library.
"Hahaha, just kidding," Emrys replied with a light chuckle. "I know you'd never go against your pack. You love them too much, don't you? Good luck with married life, though. If he ever hurts you, just run to me—I'll be here."
Their eyes locked, and though Emrys wore a playful smile, Eloise could feel the genuine weight behind his words. His sincerity touched her heart, but she refused to let it weaken her resolve. She couldn't afford to jeopardize the strength she'd built to face Alexis and protect her pack.
Eloise rose from her seat and said her goodbyes to Emrys. As she walked away from him, she knew she had to let go of the feelings she'd harbored for him.
When Eloise returned to the pack, she was greeted by her childhood friend, Cassiel, the beta of Stormsong—and the only one openly opposed to her marriage. Leaning casually against the pillar of the packhouse gate, Cassiel cut an imposing figure. The top three buttons of his long-sleeved polo shirt were undone, revealing broad shoulders and a chest that strained against the fabric. His long brown hair framed his rugged features, and his thick brows accentuated the intensity of his deep, hunter-brown eyes.
"Back already?" Cassiel asked, his voice laced with concern and disapproval as he straightened up, his gaze locking onto hers.
"Why are you so late? Your fiancé has been waiting inside for ages," Cassiel said, a scowl darkening his face.
Eloise swallowed hard, her heart sinking. She had no choice but to face the one person she despised the most—the man she was destined to marry and her soon-to-be Alpha.
If only she could make one wish to anyone who might listen, it would be this: someone, anyone, please kill her Alpha.
CHAPTER 02: MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
CHAPTER 02: MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
"There you are! I've been waiting for you, Eloise."
Alexis approached, leaning in to kiss Eloise, but she quickly stepped back. Cassiel moved in front of her, blocking the gesture.
Alexis frowned, his face filled with contempt, though he tried to mask it with one of his charming smiles—the kind that could make anyone swoon, provided they didn't know the real him.
'Trash wrapped in a handsome package,' Eloise thought. For her, Alexis's looks were the only redeeming thing about him. His golden hair, hooded green eyes, and chiseled jawline made him look like a prince ripped straight out of a fairytale. But beneath that stunning exterior were a demon's horns and tail.
"What are you doing here, Alpha Alexis?" Eloise asked, stepping out from behind Cassiel. She didn't want Alexis to pick on her best friend again. For reasons Eloise couldn't understand, Alexis seemed to have a problem wit
