Living a life of isolation, Genevieve Benson knew nothing about the supernatural world and it's creatures. But strange and fearful things never ceased to happen to people who target her for bullying, and this made her lose all her friends. Left with only Travis, the one friend who didn't run away from her or consider her evil, she felt contented and happy. But all that changed when she realized he wasn't who she thought he was after he committed a heinous crime in her presence. He revealed a side of him she didn't believe could ever exist, and disappeared from her life and the town. Traumatized by the experience, she did all she could to forget and erase all the memories of him from her head, but fate had a different plan altogether.
It happened again
“Eve, dear, do you remember everything I told you?” Lydia asked her daughter.
“Never fight back, no matter how provoked anyone gets me. Ignore any snarky comments anyone makes about me because they are not true. If I feel I can't ignore it because it is too much for me to handle, I should go to report the problem to the head teacher. I remember everything, mama.” Genevieve nodded in response to her mother's question. She could see the worry in the woman's eyes and wanted to allay her fears. But even she knew she had done her best several times and still somehow found herself in trouble.
A smile of relief settled on Lydia's face when she heard her daughter repeat everything she had told her that morning while preparing her for her first day at her new school.
"Listen, sweetie, it's not your fault that you are beautiful and unique. You've got eyes and hair some people would pay any amount to get, so never let anyone make you feel less proud of your angelic features. Alright?" She said, lowering herself to Eve's level.
“Alright, Mama.” Genevieve nodded and flashed her mother a smile.
“Come here.” Lydia opened her arms for a hug and Eve hugged her without hesitation. “Alright. Go on now. The teacher is waiting to receive you.” Lydia released her, and she walked into the school, hoping all would go well, and she wouldn't encounter any problems until she graduated from high school.
But exactly eight weeks later, trouble came looking for her and in the midst of it, the events of her first day discussion with her mother replayed in her head while she searched for the will to walk away from it.
At nine years old, Genevieve Benson had enrolled and ran away from five different schools in five different cities and all for no fault of hers. Her only crime was that she had features people didn't consider normal for her age – platinum white hair and eyes the color of pure honey, which accentuated her otherworldly beauty. Also, she decided to defend herself rather than cower in fear against bullies who picked on her.
On five occasions she had defended herself and on all five, the bullies ended up running away from her with their tails between their legs and a petrified look on their faces. They would return to school the next day with their parents to spread lies against her and call her a witch or an evil child. A few more days, and the bully dies mysteriously.
Once this happens, rumors begin to spread that she was the cause of their death, and all her friends begin to avoid her. To save her little heart from depression, her mother decided to change their location and enroll her in a new school.
Having spent eight weeks in her sixth and current school, things were going well because she kept to the advice of keeping a low profile and ignoring anyone who tries to make her feel bad.
But everything changed the day she heard the sound of someone crying in the school toilet after school. She was already on her way out of the school when she heard it, and decided to check who it was. Her brows knitted on realizing that it was Alice, a familiar junior pupil who had been nothing but nice to her.
“Alice? What's wrong?” Genevieve asked, sighting the little redhead crouching in one corner and sobbing intensely.
“It's Carl. He took off my glasses and I can't see properly without them.” Alice answered, her voice breaking due to her sobs.
Eve looked around and her eyes caught sight of the glasses on the countertop. She moved to grab them.
“I found your glasses. Here. Put them on.” She crouched and handed the pair to the girl. She didn't know who this Carl was, but he must be a very vile person to do this to a little, helpless girl. Who jokes with someone's glasses? Especially someone who couldn't see properly without them? “Stop crying. Let's go. Your dad might be waiting outside already.” She helped Alice to her feet and wiped her eyes.
“What do we have here? A meddlesome brat. Who said you could interfere in my business?” A male voice suddenly echoed behind Eve, and she turned around to see who the voice belonged to.
True to her thoughts, she had not seen the face before, although he looked like a senior. Her first instinct was to ask him why he thought it was okay to treat Alice like that, but recalling she was not supposed to engage bullies, she swallowed her words and instead grabbed Alice’s hand, so they could leave the place.
“I'm talking to you, old lady in the body of a child,” Carl uttered, and Eve paused for a moment. He just did it. He just did the same thing all her bullies in the past did — calling her an old lady because of the color of her hair.
It took all her courage for Eve not to respond even though she was already boiling inside of her. In the end, she told herself it was not worth it because she didn't want to change schools anymore. So she continued her walk outside, taking Alice with her.
But misfortune seemed to be after her that day because, although she successfully ignored Carl, he refused to let it go. Annoyed that he was getting ignored, he followed her, grabbed her shoulder and turned her around roughly to face him while saying, “how dare you walk out on me while I'm talking to you?”
But he was in for a shock because the moment Eve faced him and their eyes met, he froze for a few seconds, his eyes stretching wide, before he bolted out of the bathroom, screaming at the top of his voice.
“What is wrong with him?” Alice queried, not sure what just happened or why Carl was suddenly screaming like a mad man.
“I wonder,” Eve answered, giving a surprised shrug. However, inside of her, she knew her time in that school had come to an end. She was familiar with what had just happened and what would follow. Only this time, she didn't understand why it happened, even though she didn't fight back or defend herself.
As soon as she got home, her puppy, Jack, welcomed her with a happily wagging tail, jumping in excitement.
She dropped her bag, picked him up and received a kiss from the cute, little, fluffy fella.
She giggled. “You know you are my only friend now. I hope I won't lose you too.” She said, fixing her eyes in the direction of the kitchen where she could see her mother coming out of. The woman was all smiles as she approached and Eve wondered why she looked so happy.
“Eve, dear, I have good news. I've just secured a good paying job in the heart of the city. You will no longer lack anything you need in school, and you can participate in all the activities others are participating in.” Lydia announced, and Eve gave her a not-so-happy smile.
How was she going to tell her mother that she couldn't go back to school? How would she explain that what they ran away from had finally happened again in this new location?
Homeschooling
"You don't look very happy," Lydia observed from the lopsided, forced smile on her daughter's face.
"I am happy." Eve said, keeping the smile on her face, but Lydia was not convinced.
"Did something happen, sweetie?" Lydia asked and Eve panicked. She didn't want to lie to her mother and, at the same time, she didn't think she was ready to spill the news.
"Umm, I should take my bag to my room, Mama. And I'm hungry." Eve moved to leave her mother's presence, but Lydia would not have it.
She held the girl's hand, stopping her from executing her escape plan. "Don't do that, Eve. Talk to me. What is wrong? I know you are trying to hide something. Tell me, what is it?"
Eve lowered her eyes, losing the will to hide the information any longer. "Mama, I… I can't go back to school." She confessed.
Lydia's eyes widened. "What?! Tell me it's not what I'm thinking? Did you fight with someone?" Lydia asked, searching Eve's eyes as if the answers to her question
