Chapter 1 : A Life of Struggles

The shrill beep of Christiana’s alarm clock shattered the silence of the early morning. She groaned, pressing her face into the thin pillow, wishing she could steal just five more minutes of sleep. But there was no time for that. With a sigh, she forced herself up, rubbing the exhaustion from her eyes.

Her small, dimly lit bedroom was as modest as it had always been, peeling paint on the walls, a tiny wooden desk cluttered with books and papers, and a second-hand laptop that barely functioned. The scent of herbal medicine lingered in the air, a constant reminder of her mother’s illness.

With practiced efficiency, Christy dressed for the day. A pair of faded jeans, a plain green t-shirt, and a sweater that had seen better days. Her reflection in the cracked mirror showed dark circles under her eyes, proof of her late-night studying and double shifts.

She glanced toward the adjacent room, where her younger sister, Grace, was still curled up beneath her blanket. Christy hesitated before gently shaking her.

“Grace, wake up. Come on, wake up” she said said shaking Grace up.

“You’ll be late for school,” she murmured.

Grace stirred, blinking sleepily. “Just five more minutes please…”

“You said that yesterday,” Christy said, forcing a teasing smile despite her exhaustion. “Come on, I’ll make you breakfast.”

At the mention of food, Grace sat up, rubbing her eyes. Christy helped her out of bed before heading to the kitchen, where their mother sat at the small dining table, a warm yet tired smile on her face.

She was already awake and couldn’t go back to sleep.

“Morning, sweetheart,” her mother greeted weakly, her voice laced with fatigue.

“Morning, Mom,” Christy replied, forcing cheerfulness into her tone.

“Couldn’t sleep?” Christy said as she made her way to the kitchen cabinet to get the bread.

“You know how it is” Her mother said weakly.

Christy let out a sigh. She hid her worry well, but deep inside, she feared how much longer her mother could keep up this battle with her illness. The medical bills were piling up, and Christy was managing to stay out of debt.

She quickly prepared a simple breakfast, toast and eggs before helping Grace get ready.

“Are you coming to pick me up today, or do I have to take the bus” Grace said as she got ready.

“I’m sorry sweetheart, I have to go for my shift immediately after my last class” Christy said as she handed her sister her schoolbag. Then she noticed her phone buzzing on the counter. A text from Jeff.

Jeff: You forgot to send me that cash. What’s up?

Christy’s stomach twisted. It wasn’t the first time he had asked for money. Lately, it felt like that was all their relationship was about. He didn’t text for weeks and now his suddenly messaging her.

With a sigh, she shoved her phone into her bag and hurried out the door.

“Don’t forget to take your medications mom, I love you” Christy said as she and Grace hurriedly left.

“I love you too” Her mom replied weakly as she gave a soft smile. Christy was growing up to be a beautiful young lady.

By the time she arrived on campus, Christy was already running late for her business class. She sprinted down the hallway, her bag slung over one shoulder, dodging students left and right.

Just as she reached the lecture hall, the professor’s stern voice echoed through the room.

“Miss Christiana, nice of you to join us,” he said, glancing at his watch.

Christy swallowed hard. “I’m sorry, sir. The bus was…”

“Save it,” the professor cut her off. “Take your seat and don’t distract us.”

Flushing with embarrassment, she slid into an empty seat, only to realize who she was sitting beside, Nathan Carter.

Her stomach twisted in irritation. Of all the people…

Nathan was leaning back in his chair, a smirk playing on his lips. His presence was impossible to ignore. He smelled heavenly with his neatly styled dark hair, expensive wristwatch, and an air of effortless confidence, he screamed privilege.

“Late again, Christiana?” he mused in a low, teasing voice. “At this rate, you might as well set up a bed in class.”

She shot him a glare. “Mind your own business.”

Nathan chuckled, tapping his pen against the desk. “Oh, but it is my business when I have to sit next to someone who’s always scrambling to catch up.”

Christy clenched her jaw. It was no secret that Nathan was the son of a business mogul. While she was struggling to pay tuition, he probably had his father’s company waiting for him the moment he graduated.

The professor clapped his hands together. “Alright, everyone. We’ll be pairing you up for the semester’s business project. Your partner will be the person next to you.”

Christy’s stomach dropped. No.

A slow grin spread across Nathan’s face. “Well, looks like you’re stuck with me, partner.”

Before Christy could reply, a familiar voice piped up from behind her.

“Oh no, you got Nathan? Good luck surviving that.”

Christy turned to see Kate, her best friend, shooting her a playful but sympathetic look.

Kate had been by her side since their first year of college, always offering a shoulder to lean on. Unlike Christy, who preferred to keep to herself, Kate was bold, sarcastic, and never afraid to speak her mind.

“I don’t need luck,” Christy muttered. “I need a miracle.”

Nathan placed a hand over his chest mockingly. “Wow, Christy, you wound me. And here I was, thinking we’d make an amazing team.”

Kate rolled her eyes. “Don’t let him get to you. His ego is bigger than his daddy’s company.”

Nathan only smirked, unfazed. “And yet, people still love me.”

“Who said people love you” Kate shot back.

“I don’t need you to like me Kate, it’s not like I like you” Nathan replied. Kate frowned as she hit his head immediately from behind.

Christy exhaled sharply, already dreading the next few months. The last thing she needed was to spend even more time around someone like Nathan Carter.

Little did she know, this was only the beginning of a complicated, tangled fate between them, one she never could have predicted.

And soon, her entire life would change.

Chapter 2: Unwanted Partnership

The moment the lecture ended, Christy shot up from her seat, shoving her notebook into her bag. If she moved quickly, she could get out of the hall before…

“Whoa, slow down, Christy,”

“Why the rush?”  Nathan’s voice rang out as he stepped in front of her, blocking her path. His ever-present smirk was firmly in place, as if he had been waiting for this moment.

Christy groaned inwardly. “Move, Nathan.”

“Not so fast,” he said, leaning casually against the desk. “We need to talk about our project.”

Christy huffed. “I have work later. I don’t have time to sit around and…”

“Work, work, work,” Nathan interrupted, shaking his head. “You know, you really should take a break sometimes. It’s unhealthy to be so serious all the time.”

She shot him a glare. “Not all of us have billionaire fathers funding our lives, Carter. Some of us actually have responsibilities.”

For a split second,
