Chapter 1 Collision of Worlds

Emma Carter drummed her fingers on the worn wooden desk, staring at the flashing cursor on her laptop screen. The newsroom around her buzzed with energy hones ringing, reporters shouting, the scent of stale coffee thick in the air. She should have been thrilled about the assignment she’d just received, but instead, a heavy knot twisted in her stomach.

Alexander Kingston.

A billionaire, a business tycoon, and New York City’s most elusive bachelor. He was the kind of man who built empires with a single handshake and crushed rivals without a second thought. He had it all power, wealth, and a scandalous reputation that made headlines every other week. And now, Emma was expected to write the article that could expose his secrets.

"You’re staring at that screen like it’s going to write itself," a voice teased.

Emma glanced up to see her best friend and fellow journalist, Riley Lawson, smirking at her over the rim of a coffee cup.

"Maybe it will if I stare hard enough," Emma muttered.

Riley plopped down in the chair across from her, raising an eyebrow. "Come on, this is huge. Kingston is practically untouchable, and you little Miss Investigative Genius get to be the one to crack the mystery. This could make your career."

Emma sighed, rubbing her temple. "Or it could destroy it. Have you seen what happens to reporters who go after him? Lawsuits, ruined reputations… Kingston plays dirty."

"That’s what makes it exciting," Riley said with a grin. "Besides, you're not just anyone. You’re Emma Carter—the woman who took down Senator Whitmore’s corruption scandal. If anyone can handle Kingston, it’s you."

Emma wished she shared Riley’s confidence. Sure, she had uncovered political scandals, exposed corporate fraud, and made a name for herself in investigative journalism. But Alexander Kingston wasn’t just another corrupt businessman—he was a force of nature.

Her editor, Paul Monroe, had made it clear. “I want the real Alexander Kingston,” he had said. “Not just the billionaire with a penthouse and a private jet. Find out what makes him tick, what he’s hiding. There’s a reason he avoids the press. Get me that story.”

Emma sighed, finally typing a single sentence onto the blank document:

Alexander Kingston is a man of power, mystery, and secrets. And I’m going to uncover them all.

She had no idea that, in doing so, she was about to unravel her own heart.

By the time evening rolled around, Emma had already spent hours researching everything she could about Kingston. His father, Richard Kingston, had built their family empire from the ground up, and Alexander had inherited it after his father’s sudden death. In ten years, he had expanded Kingston International into one of the most powerful corporations in the country. His business ventures ranged from real estate to tech, each move calculated and ruthless.

But what intrigued Emma the most wasn’t his business. It was the fact that, despite being one of the most sought-after men in the world, he rarely gave interviews.

Riley leaned over her desk, scrolling through a news site. “Looks like Kingston is attending that charity gala tomorrow night—the one at the Rosewood Hotel.”

Emma frowned. “And?”

Riley shot her a look. “And, you need an invite.”

Emma bit her lip. That was easier said than done. The Rosewood Gala was one of the most exclusive events of the year, filled with celebrities, politicians, and billionaires. The only way in was with an invitation, and she certainly didn’t have one.

But maybe… she didn’t need one.

The Gala

The next evening, Emma stood outside the grand entrance of the Rosewood Hotel, her heart hammering in her chest. The air was crisp, and the lights from the chandeliers inside glowed through the massive glass windows, casting a golden hue over the polished marble floors.

Dressed in a sleek black gown she had borrowed from Riley, Emma blended in with the wealthy crowd. She had managed to slip past security by mingling with a group of guests, keeping her head down just enough to go unnoticed.

Now came the hard part—finding Kingston.

She scanned the room, taking in the glittering guests sipping champagne, their laughter mingling with the soft notes of the orchestra. She knew from her research that Kingston wasn’t a fan of crowds. If he was here, he’d be somewhere more private.

As she made her way through the crowd, she heard a deep voice behind her.

“You don’t belong here.”

The voice sent a shiver down her spine. Smooth, confident, and laced with amusement.

Emma turned slowly, her breath catching as she met the intense gaze of Alexander Kingston himself.

He was taller than she had expected, his tailored suit fitting him perfectly, exuding effortless power. His piercing blue eyes studied her with quiet curiosity, his lips curving slightly, as if he was already three steps ahead of whatever excuse she was about to give.

For a moment, she was speechless. The man radiated control, an aura so commanding it made the air between them feel electric.

She quickly composed herself. “I—”

“Who are you?” he interrupted, tilting his head slightly, the amusement still dancing in his eyes. “Because I know everyone in this room. And I don’t know you.”

Emma’s pulse pounded. She needed to think fast. Lying to him wouldn’t end well, but telling him she was a journalist looking for a scoop would be even worse.

She squared her shoulders, meeting his gaze head-on. “Emma Carter.”

Alexander raised an eyebrow. “And what exactly is Miss Carter doing at my event?”

His event? Of course. A billionaire of his status wouldn’t just be attending—he would be running the show.

Emma gave him a confident smile. “Enjoying the evening. Just like you.”

His eyes darkened slightly, and he took a step closer. “Is that so?”

For a brief moment, she thought he might call security. But then, to her surprise, he extended his hand.

“Then dance with me.”

Emma’s breath hitched. This was not how she expected their first meeting to go. She had planned to observe him from a distance, maybe overhear a conversation or two. But now, she was face-to-face with the man she was supposed to expose—and he was asking her to dance.

She hesitated, but only for a second.

Taking his hand, she let him lead her onto the dance floor, her body suddenly very aware of the way his fingers rested against hers, the heat of his palm sending a jolt of something unfamiliar through her.

As the music swelled, Alexander pulled her closer, his voice low in her ear.

“I don’t believe in coincidences, Miss Carter,” he murmured. “So tell me—what are you really doing here?”

Emma swallowed hard, knowing that whatever answer she gave him… it was already too late.

She was in way over her head.

Chapter 2 The Billionaire’s Game

Emma's heart pounded as she swayed in Alexander Kingston’s arms, surrounded by the glittering elite of New York. The orchestra played a slow, elegant waltz, but the music barely registered in her mind. She was too busy trying to ignore the heat of his touch, the intoxicating scent of his cologne, and—most of all—the way his piercing blue eyes were locked onto her, searching, testing.

"I'll ask again," Alexander murmured, his voice smooth but firm. "What are you really doing here, Miss Carter?"

Emma forced a polite smile, tilting her chin up in defiance. "I told you. Enjoying the evening."

His lips curved into a smirk, as if he could see right through her. "You're a terrible liar."

Panic flared in her chest. Did he already suspect who she was? She needed to get back in control of the conversation.

"Is this how you always interrogate women you dance with?" she asked, arching an eyebrow.

He chuckled, l
