Prologue

"I can help you with that. If you don’t want to be a writer for now, I can recommend you to Ms. Becker’s business partner. They are also looking for a new secretary for the new CEO of their company. I can send your details and credentials to them," she told me seriously, sparking enthusiasm in me.

"Really?"

“Yes, Everly. Expect a call tomorrow for your interview and after that, you still need to finish your last book before you go.”

With those words, she left me at the coffee shop. I lingered a few more minutes before deciding to return to the office, knowing I had much to do.

It might seem shallow, but I know myself. As much as possible, I want to avoid anything that might remind him of me before I become a threat to someone else's relationship.

I don’t want to be a relationship wrecker.

As I walked back to our building, someone bumped into me with such force that I almost jumped. He emerged from our building as I entered, causing me to drop my recently bought cellphone.

“D*mn! Don't you know how to look where you're going?” he shouted at me, his tone dripping with disgust.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself as I knew this situation wouldn't help me. But if anyone's the fool here, it's him!

"I'm sorry," I muttered, still picking up my cell phone.

Once I retrieved it, his face came into view, and I noticed his expression change. It was as if he had found the person he'd been searching for. He, too, held his cellphone.

"It's you... again," he said, attempting to close the distance between us, prompting me to quickly walk away.

What is he doing here?! Is he looking for me?

I quickly averted my eyes and brushed past him, heading towards the building. However, he caught hold of my wrist.

“Wait! Let’s talk,” he said softly, his touch sending my heart pounding.

Memories of our time on the island flooded back, especially hearing his voice. I maintained a steely expression and forced a hard smile.

“Nice to see you again. Why are you here?” I asked casually, subtly urging him to release his grip.

I could see the surprise in his eyes as I freed myself. Why is he here? Ever, what's going on?

"I was looking for you," he replied, clearly bewildered.

I laughed, the wind tousling my hair as I did so.

"Why?"

"I wasn't joking when I told you I still wanted to know you—"

“B*llsh*t. Leave me alone,” I said coldly, but he grabbed me again.

"I told you, we need to talk," he insisted firmly, but I just laughed.

Before I could respond, I heard Solene and Aya calling out to me as they approached us. Panic surged through me as they neared. I saw the shock on their faces when they recognized the man holding me.

“Oh my god! It’s you again. What’s happening here?” Sol exclaimed hysterically, her eyes darting between me and the man.

I swiftly broke free from his grasp and walked away.

“I need to go. Don't come near me, please. I don’t even know who you are,” I told him firmly before leaving them behind.

My emotions were ablaze by the time I reached the office. Sitting down at my desk, I powered up the computer to start work on this troublesome book. I didn’t want to write it, but it seemed like the best story I could muster before I transitioned to a different field.

Ms. Jia had offered to publish it into a physical book and arrange a book signing upon its release.

"One Sensual Night with a Stranger…"

It chronicles our encounter and its conclusion, just ten chapters long. No need to prolong the agony.

After completing five chapters, my lips sore from biting down on them, Solene and Aya approached me with curious eyes from their cubicles.

"So, what happened to you on that island?" Sol inquired, unsatisfied with my silence, while Aya waited for an answer.

We were the only ones left in the office as it was lunchtime. I wasn't sure what they were up to, but I suspected they'd be leaving early today.

Ignoring Solene’s question, I continued typing the next chapter of my book.

“... falling in love with a stranger is the worst thing you can do while on vacation — oh my god! Is that what happened to you while we were away?"

My eyes widened, and I hastily closed MS Word, turning my attention to Sol.

"Of course not!" I retorted quickly to her assumption, but Aya couldn't help but laugh.

I blinked as they both chuckled at my response, sitting in front of me with curious expressions. I avoided meeting their gaze, knowing exactly what they were thinking.

"So, you fell in love with a stranger," Aya stated, her eyes fixed on me.

“With that man? Is that why you don't want to talk to him?”

I remained still.

“Why won't you talk to him? What happened? Did it end abruptly?” Solene chimed in, her tone teasing.

Returning to my task, I saved my work just to be safe. When I finished, I turned to face them. I deliberated whether to disclose the truth, but ultimately decided to confide in them; after all, they were my friends, and I trusted they would understand my decision.

"I gave in to him," I whispered, almost inaudibly, but I knew they heard me.

Their jaws dropped simultaneously, mirroring Ms. Jia’s reaction earlier. I could hardly blame them for their disbelief; I would react the same way to what I'd just confessed.

Aya rose from her seat and headed to her cubicle for water, while Solene continued to stare at me, still unable to comprehend.

"Are you serious?" She hissed incredulously.

I nodded at her, and she stood up abruptly, clutching her head before turning back to me.

“Oh my god. Are you still you, Everly? Is that really you? How? Why? We believed when you said you're still virgin— ”

“I was!”

“So, you’re telling us now that he’s the — oh my god! How did it happen?" she asked again in shock, leaving me shaken.

I stared at them both and left for the pantry. When I returned with food, they were still waiting for me in the office.

"Did you use protection?" Aya suddenly asked, causing me to discard the bread I was eating.

We hadn't. Oh gods.

"No, right?" she added, her exhale filled with concern.

“Hey, why don't you talk to him? You should talk with— ”

“I can’t, Sol. I really can’t,” I cut her off.

If only they knew how much I wanted to discuss what happened with him, but I didn’t want to jeopardize their relationship over what felt like a fleeting encounter.

To him, I was just a passing experience, nothing more, nothing less.

“Why, Ever? Doesn’t he like you?” Aya asked bluntly, causing me to stutter.

I sighed, ashamed to answer because I knew the truth. They might be even more surprised to learn that I didn’t even know his name yet.

“He’s engaged,” I whispered, returning to my swivel chair.

“I don’t know his name. All I remember is the last thing he said to me before we parted ways. I don't know why he's here,” I finally confessed to them, putting on my headphones to block out their next words.

Chapter 1

2 weeks earlier…

"We'll have our annual business trip, so I want you all to be ready and pack all your things. We need this to give ourselves a break," our boss announced.

"Everly, come with us, okay? Who knows, you might find the billionaire you'll marry there, just like Flor did," Solene joked while tidying up her table, referring to another colleague of ours.

Flor resigned when she married her wealthy husband. Everybody here envies her, except me. I couldn't care less about those things.

"I'm not really looking, Sol. I'm perfectly fine being single," I replied, rolling my eyes. "Those guys are just headaches."

Solene immediately turned to me, wide-eyed.

"Stupid! It depends on the situation. If he's wealthy and capable of providing for me, it's okay if he's a headache. I'll turn a blind eye."

I just shook my head at her words.

After bidding farewell to each other, I headed straight to the coffee shop in front of our s
