She Took My Husband. I Took Everything Else. Adrian Kane served the divorce with the same efficiency he closed billion-dollar deals. No raised voice. No explanation. Just papers across our marble kitchen island, a settlement check, and the woman he'd been seeing for eleven months standing in our doorway with a pass key I never gave her. He told me he was tired of pretending. He had chosen Serena Wench. What I didn't know was that Serena hadn't just been stealing my husband. For a year, she'd been quietly framing me for corporate espionage, making sure Adrian would never trust me again. He believed her. He erased me. And I left New York with two suitcases, a ruined reputation, and a secret I hadn't yet shared with him. I was pregnant... with triplets. I didn't break... I rebranded. Four years later, I was Clara Sterling. I built Sterling Global from a laptop on a cramped London kitchen table into an international powerhouse. I raised three chaotic, hilarious, terrifyingly smart toddlers with the help of Dr. Elias Thorne... the gorgeous, brilliant pediatric surgeon who stitched my heart back together and loves my children like his own. I had the perfect life. The perfect man. Until Kane Capital, Adrian’s empire, began bleeding out. They needed a savior. An anonymous billionaire swept in and acquired the controlling interest. When Adrian walked into his emergency boardroom to meet his new majority shareholder, he expected a ruthless corporate shark. He got me. He wanted his company back. He wanted my forgiveness. But then he saw the three little children with his silver-grey eyes, and Adrian Kane realized he didn't just lose a wife. He lost a family. Now, the man who threw me away will burn his own world to the ground to win me back. But the man who saved me refuses to let me go. Serena took my husband. I took his empire. Now Adrian wants his wife back. But my heart already belongs to someone else.
CHAPTER ONE: The Breakfast Subtraction
Clara's POV
There was a cold, suffocating silence that lived in the walls of my marriage.
It was not the comfortable quiet of two people who understood each other without needing to speak. It was the heavy, excessively expensive silence of a man who wished he was anywhere else, and a woman who was profoundly tired of asking him to stay.
On the morning of our second anniversary, I sat across from Adrian Kane at our massive marble kitchen island. I watched him read the Financial Times on his tablet, tracking the calculated, steady movements of his dark eyes.
He looked exactly as he always did... like a man sculpted out of cold marble and generational wealth. His dark hair was combed back without a single strand out of place. His jawline was sharp enough to cut glass. He wore a navy suit tailored on Savile Row that cost more than my entire college tuition. And he possessed silver-grey eyes that had not looked at me with genuine warmth in eleven months.
"Happy anniversary," I said quietly, keeping my voice light. It was a small test, a pathetic little measure of the temperature in the room.
Adrian did not look up from the glowing screen of his tablet. He simply turned a digital page with a smooth flick of his manicured thumb. "I told my assistant to have the diamond necklace sent to your favorite boutique on Fifth Avenue. You can pick it up at noon."
"A necklace." I took a slow, deliberate sip of my black coffee, letting the bitterness coat my tongue. "How terribly romantic. Did your assistant write the card for me, too?"
"Clara." He sighed. The sound was low, rumbling, and irritated. "I have an emergency board meeting in forty minutes. Do not start this today."
I did not start. I rarely started anything anymore.
Over the past year, I had learned how to shrink. I had learned how to fold myself up, making myself small, quiet, and unproblematic so that the great Adrian Kane could run Kane Capital without the inconvenience of an emotionally needy wife. I had learned to attend black-tie galas and stand exactly one step behind his left shoulder. I had learned to smile politely and ignore the sharp whispers of the other corporate wives who treated me like a temporary fixture.
I set my ceramic mug down on the cool marble counter. "Are we doing dinner tonight? For our anniversary?"
He finally lifted his head. His silver eyes remained completely flat, devoid of the intensity that used to exist when we first met. "No. I will be working late."
Before I could ask what kind of work required his full attention on our second anniversary, the private elevator that opened directly into our penthouse gave a soft, melodic chime.
I frowned, my heart skipping an uneven beat.
The only people who possessed the security override code to bypass the main lobby guard were me, Adrian, and the building manager.
The polished silver doors slid open with a quiet hiss. A woman stepped out onto our dark hardwood floors.
She wore a pristine white Chanel suit. She carried a rare leather Birkin bag and possessed the absolute, blinding audacity of a woman who knew she had already won the game before I even realized we were playing. Her blonde hair was styled in flawless waves. Her red lips were curved into a sharp, victorious smile.
Serena Wench.
Her last name was literally Wench. I used to think the universe was subtle in its warnings, but her ancestors had tried to warn everyone centuries ago. She was Kane Capital’s lead Public Relations Director. She was also Adrian’s oldest family friend.
And for the last six months, she was the woman I strongly suspected was sleeping with my husband.
Serena walked into my kitchen like she owned the deed to the apartment. Her red high heels clicked rhythmically against the floor, a sound that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up.
"Adrian, darling," she said. Her voice was smooth, perfectly modulated, and dripping with artificial sweetness. "The corporate lawyers are waiting downstairs in the black sedan. Are we doing this or not?"
My stomach dropped. It hit the floor with a sickening thud, leaving a cold void in my chest. "Doing what?"
Adrian stood up from his leather stool. He buttoned his suit jacket with steady, practiced hands, explicitly refusing to look at me. He kept his gaze locked on Serena instead. Then, he reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and slid it across the marble island.
The envelope stopped exactly one inch from my coffee mug.
"I am filing for divorce, Clara," Adrian said.
His voice was devoid of emotion. It was the clinical, detached tone he used when firing junior analysts or or sealing deals or dismantling rival companies during a takeover.
I stared at the thick envelope. Then I looked at him. Then I looked at Serena, who watched me with a smirk that she did not even bother to hide behind fake sympathy.
"Over breakfast?" I asked. My voice trembled just a fraction, and I hated myself for showing the weakness. "On our second anniversary?"
"The timing is unfortunate," Adrian said coldly. "But after the internal audit concluded last night, my legal team advised me to move quickly. We need to handle this quietly before the financial press gets wind of what you did."
I blinked, completely thrown off balance. "The audit? What do you mean by that? What are you talking about?"
Serena took a graceful step forward. She placed a manicured hand on Adrian’s arm, her fingers resting lightly on his dark suit sleeve. The touch was intimate.
Familiar.
"Clara, please. Do not play dumb. It is embarrassing for everyone involved. We found the offshore accounts. We know you have been funneling Kane Capital's proprietary tech designs to Vanguard Holdings."
The kitchen spun around me. I gripped the cold edge of the marble counter so hard my knuckles turned a bruised white.
"What are you talking about? I do not even have security clearance for the tech division."
"You have my security badge," Adrian said. His jaw tightened into a rigid line. His eyes narrowed in disgust. "Serena’s cybersecurity team tracked the IP data leaks directly to your private laptop, Clara. Three million dollars. Funneled into a shadow account registered under your maiden name."
"That is a lie." I pushed away from the stool, standing up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the floor. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs like a trapped bird. "Adrian, look at me. Actually look at me. You know I would never do that. Someone planted that data on my computer. She planted that data."
I pointed a shaking finger directly at Serena's face.
Serena sighed deeply, rolling her eyes upward at Adrian as if I were a hysterical child throwing a tantrum. "They always lash out when they are caught. It is textbook deflection, Adrian."
"I am giving you a very generous settlement," Adrian said, stepping slightly in front of Serena to block my view of her. "Twenty million dollars. In exchange, you will sign the non-disclosure agreement. You will immediately surrender your minor shares in Kane Capital... and you will leave New York City today."
"And if I refuse?" I whispered, staring at the man I had loved. The man I had promised my life to.
"If you refuse," Adrian replied, his voice dropping into a harsh, threat-laced whisper, "I will hand the hard drives over to the FBI. You will go to federal prison for corporate espionage, Clara. And I will personally make sure you never work in the financial industry again."
He was not bluffing.
Adrian Kane never bluffed.
He looked at me like I was a petty thief and a parasite he needed to scrape off his shoe. He had taken Serena’s fabricated evidence, swallowed it whole without a single question, and used it to execute me without a trial.
Because it was easier. Because deep down, he had never truly wanted to be married to me anyway. Our marriage had been an arrangement of convenience, a box to check off for his conservative board of directors. And this gave him the perfect excuse to replace me with the woman he actually wanted.
"You are a coward," I breathed into the silence of the kitchen.
Adrian did not flinch. "Sign the papers, Clara. My assistant will be here in one hour to box up your personal belongings."
He turned his broad back on me. He put his hand on Serena’s lower back... a protective, possessive gesture he had not given me in over a year... and guided her back toward the private elevator.
"We will be late for the emergency board meeting," Serena murmured to him as the doors opened.
"I am right behind you," Adrian replied.
The silver elevator doors closed, swallowing them both, and leaving me entirely alone in a ten-million-dollar penthouse that suddenly felt like a decorated tomb.
I looked down at the divorce papers resting on the marble.
I did not cry.
I had spent my entire marriage crying in the master shower so my husband would not be inconvenienced by my tears.
I was completely done crying over Adrian Kane.
Instead of tears, a strange, terrifying calm washed over my body. The panic receded, leaving behind a cold, sharp clarity.
I picked up the heavy gold pen sitting next to his abandoned tablet. I flipped to the very last page of the legal document.
I signed my name.
But I did not write Clara Kane...
I wrote Clara Sterling.
I left the signed papers on the counter. Then, I walked slowly into the master bathroom to grab my toothbrush and my skincare.
When I opened the mirrored medicine cabinet, my eyes immediately landed on the small pink box sitting innocently on the second shelf. It was a pregnancy test I had purchased yesterday afternoon because I was nearly three weeks late.
I looked at the cardboard box.
I looked at my pale reflection in the empty, silent bathroom mirror.
"Well," I said aloud to the empty room. "It cannot possibly get any worse."
CHAPTER TWO: Three Lines and a Golden Retriever
Clara's POV
It got worse.
Actually, to be mathematically precise, it got three times worse.
I sat on the cold edge of the oversized marble soaking tub... the ridiculously large tub that Adrian had insisted on installing during our bathroom renovation and then never once used... and stared at the three plastic sticks lined up on the counter.
Two dark pink lines on the first test. Two dark pink lines on the second test. Two glaring, undeniable pink lines on the third test.
Pregnant.
I was pregnant by a man who had just extorted me out of our marriage over a cup of black coffee. A man who was currently sitting in a boardroom with Serena Wench. A man who genuinely believed I was a corporate thief who had stolen millions from his family's legacy.
A hysterical, entirely inappropriate laugh bubbled up from the back of my throat. I slapped a hand over my mouth to smother the sound, squeezing my eyes shut as the reality crashed
