Chapter 1

Chapter 1. Miley

"We need immediate CPR right away. We are losing him!"

"Go on, go on," a loud voice echoed in the theater, accompanied by the rapid beeping sounds of the heart rate machine echoing in the room.

"Oh my god, he's going!" a woman's voice said with shivers and fear.

"We can't let that happen. Bring the defibrillator." Tension filled the atmosphere.

The machine was brought to the lead surgeon. "Clear the road!" she shouted. She came closer and waited.

"Clear!!!" a female nurse shouted. She pressed the machine against his chest.

Billy jerked, but his eyes remained closed. No sign of life. The heart rate machine increased its beeping. This can't be.

I saw my breath fog the glass panel against the door of the theater. I placed my hands against it like I intended to pass through the door. The heaviness in my chest felt like a hydraulic press had settled there.

"Clear!!!" the nurse shouted again. The defibrillator came down hard on Billy's chest, and he jerked. The beeping sound filled the room louder. It sounded like a ticking time bomb, a rapid countdown to imminent doom. I could barely breathe. I felt like I was underwater at this point. There was still no sound of life from him. Panic flooded the theater.

"Clear!" the nurse shouted. The female lead surgeon came down hard against his chest continuously. He jerked, but there was still no movement. She didn't give up. She was desperate—of course she would be. She had no choice. If she wasn't desperate, I was so not going to forgive her. I'm going to hate her for the rest of my life.

He jerked against the surgical bed, but still no response. What the hell was going on? I just couldn't understand.

It didn't take too long before the flatlining sound echoed in the room. Panic flooded their faces as they looked at each other.

"No, no, no, no," the surgeon said, her voice shaking as she looked at him. She tossed the machine away. She pressed her hand continuously against his chest and began to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation with her own hands.

"Don't you dare die on me, Billy," she screamed with a broken voice inside the room.

The other nurses and surgeons had already given up. They looked sad now, staring at the ground as they watched her fighting with her last breath.

"Don't you f*ck*ng die on me!" she screamed. She pounded with her palm against the chest of the kid. But there was nothing.

I felt like my soul was exiting my body. The pain rocked my nerves. I felt like I was engulfed in flames. A strangled cry broke out from my lips. My muscles strained. I felt the cry and the shout that was close at the tip of my tongue. But then...

"Miley!!"

A sharp feminine voice jerked into my consciousness, forcing me to jolt in my chair. I sat up quickly, my vision hazy, eyelids blinking rapidly as I struggled to recover my consciousness, which slowly crept back into my head. My hazy vision finally registered in my subconscious. I lifted my hand and adjusted my glasses against my face, squinting as my eyesight finally recovered. I swallowed hard, looked around, and brushed strands of soaked hair that were pressed against my face. I was soaked in sweat for reasons I couldn't understand.

I looked up to see the lady I recognized as my guardian—the one assigned by my parents to watch over me—and I took a deep breath.

"Are you okay?" she said. She had a worried look in her eyes. "You look like you were about to cry while you were asleep."

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. I just looked at her, completely struck dumb, then I turned around and looked through the window of the vehicle to see the surroundings. It was unfamiliar, prestigious, elite, a beautiful pavement, sky-high, towering buildings. Magnificent-looking structures that looked like they were built for billionaires. The moment my eyes fell on the large billboard across the plain, realization instantly struck me hard like a stone in my gut.

Oh my God! We have arrived at school, I thought to myself and quickly jerked up, wiping a drool I finally realized had dripped from my lips.

I quickly began to adjust myself, and she chuckled. "You don't necessarily have to struggle with how you look. You look cute anyway."

I turned to look at her with a slight frown. Is she trying to condescend to me?

I licked my lips and ignored her words and looked around the long, luxurious bus. It was empty. Every other student that had been brought to the campus had already vacated.

Oh shoot, looks like I must have been delaying her. How long have I been asleep for? I thought, embarrassment creeping onto my face. The visual of that horrific experience I had tried to shove out of my mind but never left made me grit my teeth together. I hated how this day was starting. Whenever I had a dream of that horrific past experience, it always seemed like something bad was going to happen.

After ensuring my hair was arranged, falling over my shoulders and behind my back, and adjusting my glasses and my clothing, I got up and slowly began to make my way out of the aisle where I was seated. She stepped aside for me with a bright smile. I walked past her and then stepped down the bus, feeding my eyes with the environment. My lips twitched involuntarily.

I can't believe I am finally here.

Pethagrove College of Medicine and Sciences, the biggest and largest in the country. I felt like I was standing in a courtroom field meant only for the president. I adjusted my backpack against my shoulder, taking in the sight of the students walking to and fro. Each and every one of them screamed riches, no doubt about that. I began to have doubts about myself as I looked down at my rundown sneakers, my slightly baggy black denim pants, and my rough grey hoodie. I bit against my bottom lip and quickly pulled up the hoodie from my back, bringing it down over my head.

"Do you necessarily have to do that?" Sylvia, my guardian, said beside me, but then I ignored her, adjusting my backpack over my shoulders, looking around.

"My luggage," I said softly.

She chuckled. "Oh, you don't have to worry about that. I've already assigned a few of the hostel attendants to take it over to your assigned room. You just need to head over and finish with your registration, and then you are done. Then maybe you can rest for the rest of the day. Once I learn any other thing about here, I'm going to step over to your hostel and relate to you."

She talks a lot.

I slowly nodded my head and then continued taking in the surroundings: the beautiful, large water fountain, the gigantic statue that almost matched the height of the Statue of Liberty at the center of the premises. It almost just looked like a very big, prestigious, elite educational amusement park. The beauty was astonishing. I have no words.

Then something struck my mind as I turned to look back at Sylvia. "I'm sorry, my hostel room... I hope I do not have roommates?" I asked tentatively.

She looked at me with a raised eyebrow, amusement dancing on her lips. "Of course, Miley. Now go sort out your registration so you can have some rest before the next day. We are going to have a long tour."

There was no time to waste. We made our way through the crowd of elite students, each and every one of them dressed in specific patterns that signified their department—just a guess, though. I clutched against the strap of my backpack, avoiding even the slightest attention that drifted my way. A group of students gathered at a particular booth looked up—a band of girls. They looked in my direction taking in my outfit and whispered to each other, and then I noticed them staring at me as if I had something weird on my face or something. I lifted my hand and brushed through my exposed red hair, and I heard them laugh out loud behind me, forcing me to frown.

What was that for?

I ignored them and bowed my head, keeping my focus on the ground. We got to the receptionist's office, and I heard Sylvia talking with a lady who spoke with a calm, soft, welcoming voice.

"Oh, you must be Miley," she said, forcing me to look up at her. "Come on, cheer up a little bit. You are the first student I'm seeing with a dull mood coming to such a big school such as this," she said with a friendly expression.

I managed a little smile but looked away.

"She is a shy one," Sylvia said calmly beside me, but I didn't have the time to think about it.

"It's alright. I'm sure by the time she spends about a month here, she's going to loosen up a little bit," the female receptionist said with a smile as she handed over her file. "I really do hope you enjoy your stay here, Miley," she said with a bright smile that somehow held a mystery breaking at my chest. It was weird in a way, as though she knew a secret I didn't know and I was yet to figure it out. I wanted to get out of her sight as quickly as possible.

Sylvia received the file and was about to give it to me, but I was already turning around to walk away. I didn't notice the figure that was slowly approaching me.

I noticed at that moment that the atmosphere dulled to the minimum. The temperature dropped, and silence fell like a bucket of ice. The cheering, the laughter, and the chorus of the voices of everyone in the lobby going about their activities reduced as though nature had held its breath.

Due to my hurried motion to escape the scrutiny of the receptionist lady, I barely had time to give a pause as I bumped my shoulder straight into the muscular, thick arm of the tall, towering, huge figure that had already been making his way over towards us. All I could see was a pair of strong, calloused hands and a well-built body fitted in a suit as my body bumped into him, forcing him to jerk to the side. I heard someone gasp in the distance, saying, "Oh my gosh!" But my mind was scrambled. I tilted my head barely to his side and mumbled a sorry before scurrying off.

I heard Sylvia apologizing behind me and rushing up to catch up with me. "Girl, you need to watch where you're going," she said, her voice shaking. "Do you know who you just bumped into?"

My mind didn't register that. I just needed to get away from the scrutiny. I don't know what it was, but I could feel it, like every pair of eyes in the lobby was watching me.

"Please, can I get to my hostel right away?" I asked, stopping at the entrance of the large receptionist building.

She froze and then looked at me. There was a worried expression in her eyes, like she was concerned I was going to break. She smiled and gave me my file here. "Just go through the details. You are going to see a map there that you can easily follow to lead you straight towards your hostel and to your room," she said.

"I know that. Thank you so much," I replied. "How can I get to you in case I need guidance or anything?"

"You have my number," she said. "Just call me," she said with a smile.

I nodded my head slowly, but I don't know why I felt reluctant about leaving her.

She chuckled. "You are not going to get lost, Miley, okay? It's going to be fine. I understand it's an overwhelming experience coming to a new environment far away from home, but you'll get used to it."

I nodded and smiled tentatively at her. She chuckled and waved her fingers through my hair. "Alright, head on."

I turned around and slowly began to walk away. You are not a kid, Miley. I thought to myself, why the heck did you allow her to touch your head like that?

It didn't take too long before I finally located my room. I swiped the card key against the lock, and it clicked before sliding open. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. My eyes wide and my lips formed a circle.

WOW! Beauty and luxury were an understatement compared to what I was staring at right now. It looked almost like a suite. A beautifully furnished suite that definitely did not belong to someone like me.

Am I sure I'm in the right room? I thought to myself and looked at the number on my key card, and then I checked my hostel registration in my file. They were similar.

Wow, Dad really outdid himself this time, I thought to myself, smiling. I always knew he would go out of his way to take good care of me.

I saw my luggage parked neatly beside a beautiful reading table with a reading lamp and a mirror hanging directly in front. The room was big. A nice, furnished single bed lay a few meters away from the reading table, with a long, floor-to-ceiling, slim window that looked out over two stories to where my room was located. It was beautiful. I turned to the side to see a feminine flowery designed wardrobe to the side of the bed. That's probably where I could keep my things.

That's when I tilted my head further and noticed the second space where there was a second bed kept to the side. It was also the same design as mine. A space that looked like it was meant for a reading table stood at the other end of the room, and I blinked.

Does that mean this room was supposed to be meant for two people? I thought to myself.

I felt a prick of guilt. I was occupying a room meant for two people. I bit against my finger as the thought crossed my mind, but then I shoved it away.

I don't care. I needed my comfort over anything else. One of the things that I've always hated and pleaded with my dad about coming here was about having roommates. I just needed my own privacy. I wanted to be by myself, alone with my own thoughts, and not meddle with other people's drama or affairs.

I was smiling satisfactorily to myself as I made my way over towards my luggage to get my things and prepare to organize my stuff and maybe get a good sleep when I heard loud angry comments and arguments coming from right outside the door.

I froze and looked at the door, my hands frozen over my luggage.

"This is preposterous!!!" a sharp female voice called through the quiet, sounding like someone who belonged to authority. "How the hell did they allow this to happen?!!! Where the hell is the room?!!! " the voice said, forcing my heart to begin to race as I gripped tightly against the strap of my luggage.

"Tell me where the f*ck*ng room is!!!" the female voice shouted from outside, coming out slightly muffled.

Before long, I heard the thudding of footsteps getting louder and louder until it finally came to a stop in front of my door, followed by a loud bang that made me jolt and step back away from my luggage.

"Whoever you are!!!" The woman screamed from outside.

"Open this d*mn door!!"

Chapter 2

Chapter 2. Nerve

Conflict on my first day? Definitely not what I signed up for. The lady at the other end was impatient. She kept barking against the door. "Aren't you hearing me?!!!"

I jolted from where I stood, moving over towards the door with shaky fingers. I gripped the doorknob and pulled it open quickly, stepping back as she launched into the room like a catapult, glaring at me through reading glasses, eyes blazing with heat and fury. I saw Sylvia follow closely behind her, with nervousness in her eyes.

"Look, Mrs. Morgan, please, you have to calm down. It's..."

"I don't care what it is," Mrs. Morgan shouted at Sylvia, turning to look at her, then turning back at me.

I remained frozen, looking at her in confusion. I noticed the way her eyes raked all over me, from my face down to my leg and then back up to my face. There was this look of disapproval in her eyes.

"I don't even see what's special abou
