Opis

After a heartbreaking divorce, Evelyn leaves her billionaire husband, Adrian Sinclair, without telling him she’s carrying his child. Six years later, she’s rebuilt a peaceful life as a single mother and finally agrees to marry the kind, dependable Daniel Brooks. But when Daniel brings her home to meet his family, Evelyn comes face-to-face with the man who shattered her heart, his older brother, Adrian. As old wounds reopen and long-buried secrets come to light, Evelyn must choose between the man who once broke her and the man who helped her heal.

Chapter 1

Evelyn

“Congratulations Miss Sinclair, you are six weeks pregnant!”

I can still hear the words of the doctor ringing in my ear.

I gripped the glossy ultrasound printout inside my purse like a sacred talisman. Six weeks. A steady, thudding little flutter on the monitor had proven that the dream Adrian and I had whispered into the dark for two years was finally real.

On the walk toward the Sinclair Tower, my feet barely touched the pavement. I stopped at an upscale boutique two blocks down and bought a pair of soft, cream-colored knitted booties, no larger than the palm of my hand. The sales clerk smiled knowingly, tying the small gift box with a satin ribbon. In the cab, my hands trembling with nervous joy, I scribbled a note on the embossed card tucked inside the lid: You’re going to be a daddy.

I couldn’t wait for dinner. I couldn’t wait until he came home to our quiet penthouse, shedding his tailored jacket and loosening his tie. I wanted to see the stoic, impenetrable facade of Adrian Sinclair crumble in broad daylight, surrounded by glass and steel.

When the elevator chimed on the top floor, his executive assistant, Clara, looked up from her desk with an expression that flickered with subtle panic before smoothing into trained corporate polish.

"Mrs. Sinclair," she said, quickly standing. "Mr. Sinclair is wrapping up an unscheduled executive board meeting."

"It's fine, Clara. I can wait in his office," I said, holding up the small boutique bag with a conspiratorial grin. "Just a quick surprise."

"Of course," she murmured, her voice tight. "Let me show you in."

She escorted me inside Adrian’s private office, a sprawling sanctuary of smoked glass, dark walnut, and muted gray leather. The double doors connecting to the adjacent private conference room were ajar by just a fraction of an inch—enough for the heavy, suffocating hum of voices to bleed through.

I settled onto the leather sofa, clutching the little box in my lap, feeling a sudden flutter in my stomach that had nothing to do with nausea and everything to do with anticipation. But as the silence of the office settled, the voice filtering from the adjoining room cut through the air with venomous clarity.

It was Victoria Sinclair. Cold, aristocratic, and unmistakable.

"—she doesn’t belong here, Adrian, and she never has," his mother said, her tone dripping with disdain. "A girl from a bankrupt family with no pedigree, no leverage, no connections. For three years I have tolerated this absurd charity case, but the board will not accept it any longer. She is beneath the Sinclair name. You are throwing away billions in merger capital for a pretty face that offers you nothing in return. She must go."

A cold draft seemed to slice through the warm room. I froze, my breath lodging painfully in my throat. My fingers tightened over the cardboard edges of the gift box, crushing the satin bow.

Defend me, I pleaded silently, staring at the seam of light between the doors. Tell her I’m your wife. Tell her you love me.

Adrian’s deep baritone finally cut across his mother's sharp cadence. But there was no anger in it. No defensive bite, no protective fury, no trace of the man who held me in the dark and promised that we were a team against the world.

"Lower your voice, Mother," Adrian said quietly, his tone flat, measured, and dangerously detached. "I’ll handle it."

"You keep saying that, but—"

"I said, I’ll handle it."

The footsteps began moving away from the door. I scrambled back against the cushions of the sofa, forcing my racing heart into submission. He’s just placating her, I told myself fiercely, swallowing the bitter bile rising in my throat. Adrian hates scenes. He’s diffusing her temper because they’re at the office. That's all it is.

The latch clicked, and the heavy conference door swung open.

Adrian walked in. He looked impossibly handsome, impeccably dressed in his charcoal three-piece suit, but his shoulders carried an uncharacteristic weight. His dark hair was brushed back, his jaw set in a rigid line, his gray eyes shadowed with sheer exhaustion.

"Adrian," I said, standing up, trying to inject warmth into a voice that betrayed a slight tremble. "I know you're busy, but I—"

He didn't greet me. He didn't lean in to kiss my temple or ask why I had come unannounced.

Without sitting down, he walked straight to the expansive mahogany desk, picked up a thick, navy-blue folder from his leather blotter, and turned toward me. He set it down on the edge of the glass coffee table between us with a dull, hollow thud.

Inside the open flap, bold, black legal font stared up at me: PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.

A strange, breathless laugh escaped my lips. "What... what is this? Did legal misfile something? Clara gave you the wrong folder."

"It isn't a mistake, Evelyn," Adrian said calmly.

The air vanished from the room.

He didn't blink. His eyes were completely vacant, stripped of the tenderness I had built my entire life around. It was the same tone he used when terminating an underperforming division or buying out a hostile competitor.

"Our marriage is over," he continued, each syllable deliberate, measured, and final. "The financial terms are extraordinarily generous. The penthouse is yours, along with an unconditional monthly stipend and the portfolio we set aside during our first year. You will want for nothing."

My ears were ringing. The room seemed to tilt, the high-rise windows spinning into a blur of gray sky. My knuckles turned white against the gift box behind my back, the tiny baby shoes pressing painfully into my palm.

Tell him, my mind screamed. Tell him you're carrying his child.

But looking into those chilled, indifferent eyes, the words dissolved into ash on my tongue. A terrifying realization settled over my chest like lead: a child would not save a marriage that had already been quietly signed away in an executive boardroom. It would only make me look like a beggar clinging to the coat-tails of a man who had already cast me aside.

I stared at him, my lips parted, completely hollowed out.

Adrian took a fountain pen from his breast pocket and laid it precisely beside the blue folder.

"Sign the papers, Evelyn," he said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute stillness. "This marriage ends today."

Chapter 2

Adrian

A dull, throbbing ache pulsed behind my temples, grinding against my skull with every breath I drew. I couldn’t remember the last time I had slept for more than an hour without jolting upright, drenched in a cold, suffocating sweat. Four days? Five? Time had blurred into a continuous nightmare of fluorescent boardroom lighting, legal transcripts, and quiet, insidious threats delivered over vintage crystal.

I kept my chin level, my gaze locked on Evelyn, forcing every muscle in my face into a mask of stone.

If I showed even a hairline fracture in my composure, she would look for hope. And hope in this room, under the watchful eyes of the Sinclair dynasty, was a death sentence.

She stood frozen on the other side of the glass table, clutching a small boutique bag against her stomach as if it were a shield. Her soft hazel eyes searched mine, desperate, disoriented, begging me to tell her this was a tasteless prank. The sight of her tore through my
