Chapter 1
The Night Before
“I, Rayann Mason, accept you, Theodore Watson.”
“I, Theodore Watson, accept you, Rayann Mason.”
Those words echoed through my mind like a dream I hadn’t lived yet — a promise from a future I wasn’t sure I was ready for.
It was the night before my eighteenth birthday. The night before everything was supposed to change.
We were sprawled out across the grass behind the pack house, the scent of pine and smoke drifting through the air as laughter rolled between us. A small fire crackled nearby, flickering across familiar faces I’d known my whole life.
Jack was, as usual, the center of attention — grinning, loud, and pretending he didn’t have nerves made of glass. Hunter was teasing him mercilessly about the time he asking Shelly out, and how scared he was. It had been the topic of the evening for nearly an hour.
“Come on, Jack,” Hunter said with a smirk, tossing a twig into the fire. “You’ve been staring at her like a lovesick pup for years. Just ask her already.”
Jack groaned, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s not that easy, man.”
“Why not?” Hunter laughed. “You’re the Beta’s son, tall, built like a warrior—”
“—and allergic to rejection,” I added, smirking.
That earned a round of laughter. Even Shelly giggled, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. She tried to hide her blush, but I saw it. We all did.
Shelly’s my baby sister — nine months younger but always acting like the older one. She’s the type of girl who glows without realizing it: golden hair, striking green eyes, and a soft, steady strength that could melt anyone’s defenses. And Jack? He’s been in love with her since we were pups.
I was happy for them — or at least I wanted to be. But part of me couldn’t stop worrying. Shelly would turn eighteen soon too, which meant she’d be old enough to find her mate. And what if it wasn’t Jack? What if fate tore that hope apart?
Jack might laugh too loud and act too confident, but his heart was real. Losing Shelly would break him.
He caught me staring and grinned. “What? You spacing out again, Alpha-to-be?”
I threw a pebble at him. “You wish.”
He ducked, laughing, and Hunter snorted so hard he almost fell over.
Carly leaned against a tree trunk, quiet as always, sketching something in her notebook. The moonlight brushed her hair silver, and for a second I thought about how different we all were — and how much we’d grown together.
There were five of us in total: Jack, Shelly, Hunter, Carly, and me — The Omega 1.
The name made no sense anymore, but it was ours. When we were little, we’d thought it was genius. Omega for being the last, 1 because we were “the last ones standing.” Like a secret squad of pups ready to take on the world. We really believed it, too — that we were untouchable, unstoppable, destined for greatness.
But life in the Eden Pack wasn’t that simple.
As I got older, the laughter and play fights turned into real training, real tests, and real whispers. Some pack members didn’t think I should be the next Alpha — not because I wasn’t capable, but because I was a girl. They wanted my father, Alpha King Shane Mason, to pass the title to Jack instead.
Dad hated that talk, but I could see the weight of it wearing on him. He always told me I was born for this — that strength wasn’t in muscle but in heart. Yet lately, his faith had started to crack under pressure. I’d overheard him more than once arguing with Mom about it.
One night, their voices carried down the hall, sharp and tired.
“Baby, I don’t know what to do,” Dad said, frustration heavy in his tone. “Rainey would be a good Alpha Queen, but the pack won’t accept her. Maybe we should talk to Beta Nathan… about Jack.”
“Yes, Shane,” Mom answered softly.
“Zoey Ann,” he snapped. “That’s all you ever say — ‘Yes, Shane.’”
“Calm down,” she whispered. “The girls are trying to sleep. I say yes because I need time to think. You want answers immediately, and I can’t give them that way.”
“That’s not true.”
“We’ve been married twenty-two years,” she said quietly. “I know you better than you think.”
That night, I’d stared at the ceiling for hours, fighting the sting in my chest. My father’s doubt hurt more than any wound from training ever could.
“Ray. Rainey. Rayann!”
Shelly’s voice yanked me back to the present. She waved a hand in front of my face, eyes narrowing.
“What?” I asked.
“Where were you just now?” She looked around at the group, embarrassed that I’d zoned out again.
“Sorry,” I said, forcing a smile. “I’ve just got a lot on my mind. Only four more hours until I turn eighteen… and go through my first shift. I’m kind of nervous.”
Shelly’s teasing expression softened. “Oh, Rainy. You’re gonna be amazing. You always are.”
Jack gave my shoulder a reassuring pat. “Yeah, you’ll be fine. You’re tougher than all of us combined.”
Hunter raised his soda in mock salute. “To Rainey Mason — the soon-to-be Alpha Queen of Eden Pack!”
They all cheered, and for a moment, the heaviness in my chest eased. Their laughter wrapped around me like armor.
I stood and brushed the grass from my jeans. “Thanks, guys. I love you all. Really. And thanks for distracting me tonight. It means more than you know.”
Jack stood, bowing dramatically. “Anything for our future Alpha.”
I rolled my eyes and hugged each of them in turn — Hunter’s bear hug, Carly’s shy squeeze, Jack’s easy warmth, and finally, Shelly’s arms around me, familiar and safe.
As I headed toward the pack house, I glanced back. The firelight danced on their faces, shadows of the only family who truly knew me. For the first time, I felt the pull of something bigger — something ancient — stirring under my skin.
Tonight was the last night I’d ever be just Rayann Mason, daughter of the Alpha King.
Tomorrow, I would meet the wolf within.
Chapter 2
The Stars He Gave Me
I lay on my bed, staring up at the ceiling.
The same faint glow greeted me — hundreds of tiny plastic stars scattered above my head, still clinging stubbornly to the paint after all these years. They glimmered softly in the dark, fragile echoes of a memory that used to feel like magic.
Dad had put them up when I was five.
Back then, I was terrified of the dark. Shadows made me cry; the silence made me feel small. I’d crawl into my parents’ bed almost every night, clutching my stuffed wolf, convinced that monsters were hiding just beyond the edge of my nightlight’s reach.
One night, Dad decided he’d had enough of the fear — not out of frustration, but because he wanted to fix it in only the way he could. He told me to wait outside my room while he worked on a “surprise.” I remember sitting cross-legged in the hallway, the carpet soft under my bare feet, my heart
