The Alpha King's Unworthy Mate

Selene's POV

 -"For our pack, it is a crucial day. When Alpha Lucian Varkas shows up, I would like to have all of my kids by my side. I want our impression to be positive. He is the strongest candidate for the royal throne and one of the most powerful Alphas on the planet. We must earn his allegiance. "Jake, you'll accompany me to the meeting, and the girls will take care of the Alpha's accommodations and reception," our father told us over breakfast.

We eat breakfast together every morning, during which our father gives us a rundown of our day's routine and tasks. -"But Father, I want to be at the meeting too," I said. "I'd like to present our economic projects and share my ideas." -"Don't worry, my sunshine," was his kind response. "Jake will take care of everything. You are aware of Alphas' attitudes toward female politicians. We don't want to agitate or provoke him, do we? -"I guess you're correct, Dad. Even though it hurt, I told him that I wouldn't do anything to endanger the future of our pack.

Even though I detested it, I could see his point of view. Wolf culture is extremely patriarchal. Women are only allowed to play the roles of Lunas or omegas, which are limited to taking care of the home and procreating. Luckily, my father doesn't hold these antiquated beliefs, but our pack is too tiny and financially precarious to question social conventions.

Father is quite nervous today. The announcement of Jake as the new Alpha is not the only purpose of this meeting. In order to take the free land that borders our northern territory, he wants to win Lucian Varkas's support. Sadly, Alpha Bradley of our neighboring pack, whose pack is bigger and stronger, also wants this area. I hope Alpha Lucian realizes that this land is essential to our existence, not just our growth.

Father has had difficulty leading after our mother passed away. Ben, Jake's beta, took over to lead the pack as we were too young to assist. Ben was bad at economics, but he was great at defense. Our enterprises suffered under his leadership, and a large number of pack members became impoverished. Jake will formally assume the role of Alpha tomorrow, marking his 24th birthday, and I will do everything in my power to assist him in restoring prosperity to our country.

If I don't find my partner, Jacob, Ben's kid, will take over as our new Beta. Alisa, Jacob's partner, passed away six years ago. She was lovely and compassionate. Even though we weren't close friends, Jacob and the rest of us were grieved by her passing.

Though not as strong as the one he had with his partner, Jacob and I grew up together and had a close relationship. I was thrilled for Jacob and Alisa when it was announced that they were mates, but I was also a little jealous, hoping to find my own partner someday. I long for the bond, the sparks, the connection that everyone talks about. I hope that one day the Moon Goddess will provide me with a partner. -"Now is the moment! He's here already! Selene, why are you still wearing your tracksuit? As usual, Stella stormed into my room and reprimanded me. How does she constantly enter covertly? - "Because you're always in your own world, my beautiful sister," she said. -I pondered, "Did I say that aloud?" -"No, you didn't," my inner wolf retorted. - "Huh?" I blinked, perplexed. -"Alpha Lucian Varkas is here, Selene! Quit fantasizing! Prepare yourself. Stella spoke impatiently. -"Ten seconds, and I'll be done," I answered.

-"Ten seconds? Are you angry? I've spent the entire morning getting ready! I'm ecstatic! I sincerely hope he's the one. -"The one?" I asked, perplexed. -"Obviously, my pal! She virtually bounced with enthusiasm as she continued, "He's 30 and still single.

Rumor has it he's searching for his fated mate." -"Why do you think your partner will be the future king of all werewolves? A princess or member of a royal family will probably be his mate. In addition, I've heard he's rude, conceited, and self-centered, even if he were your partner. Why would you want a partner like that?

-"Oh, Selene, are you blind? The future queen will be his partner! enjoying a comfortable life while residing in a palace and donning opulent clothing and jewelry. If he's a jerk, so what? I apologize to Stella, but I don't find that appealing. No matter how wealthy Alpha Lucian is, I would much rather be with someone normal and kind than live with him."

-"Anyway, sis. You've always had a limited perspective. You know, people can change. Perhaps he will show his partner more affection and kindness. -"Stella, people are difficult to change. And all the wealth in the world isn't worth living a life like that, where you're constantly being watched, judged, and in danger." She said, "You're impossible!" and stormed out of my room.

From Lucian's perspective

Finally, we reached this unimportant pack, our last destination before heading back home. I've proven my dominance in the werewolf community, but the tour has been grueling. They are now aware that I should not be challenged for the throne.

I'm not that interested in this pack. It's tiny and is having financial difficulties. I won't ignore their kind request to attend the introduction of their forthcoming Alpha, either. Even tiny allies can be beneficial.

However, since coming here, I've had weird emotions, such as restlessness, eagerness, and uneasiness. Varkas, my wolf, is as agitated as I am. It's more than terror; it's an inexplicable expectation.

I have a feeling that this visit will permanently alter my life. As always, I'm prepared to face whatever fate has in store.

Lucian's POV

-"Having the future King there during my son's coronation makes me very happy! Alpha Lucian, it's a real honor. You are among the most exceptional and promising Alphas of your time; your father was quite strong, but I genuinely think you are stronger than he was. Your reputation comes before you!" -"Thank you," I said flatly. I hear the same compliments everywhere I go. I'm so beyond this former Alpha mindset. Why can't they just express their thoughts without all the formalities and flowery praise? He has no idea that I don't benefit from flattery.
