Chapter 1

Prologue Shattered Innocence Sofia's POV Prague has always appealed especially to me; its mellow glow of street lamps in the evening is captured in the delicate lines of ancient architecture and beauty. But today the streets murmured of loss and sadness. The war had permeated all aspect of our lives and turned the magic into something sinister. Wandering around the Old Town Square, I listened to kids laughing near the fountain and inhaled the scents of freshly made pastries from the vendors. These recollections, each one reminding us of what we had lost, seemed to us now like broken glass. The air in the dimly lighted hospital room muesli in the injuries smelled antiseptic. The screams of the wounded broke the peace even if the stillness of the lost weight on my heart. Taken from me and victim of a violent conflict, my innocence shattered with my brother Tomas. Though fate had other plans, I had vowed to myself I would never let this evil once more touch my heart. Like every other day, the early sun was hardly seen among the thick clouds. I went between beds caring to the guys who had given all for a nation they loved. Every soldier had a story, and I sometimes found myself caught in their eyes—eyes full of hope, terror, or even the far-off expression of someone who had seen too much. Emotionally, I was falling; learning to hide my own pain and bundle it beneath a smile while I comforted someone. Today Miss Novotna, are you ready for the rounds? Pulling me from my thoughts, my instructor, Dr. Pavel asked questions. His reasonable and empathetic look always reminded me that I was not confronting this by myself. I nodded, trying to look as if I were smiling. Indeed, doctor. Just attempting to filter through my concepts. He gave my shoulder a little comforting slap. "Here you are working rather aggressively. Keep in mind also not to forget. Just suddenly the hospital doors opened, and anarchy tore like a hurricane. Arriving were troops, some on stretchers and others nearly walk-able. When I identified Captain Adrian Novak, the guy everyone spoke of in whispered tones, my pulse skipped. He was equally a myth as, despite serving as a soldier, he was also a war hero. But now he appeared different, his usually dazzling green eyes fogged with tiredness and suffering. Help: He sobbed while carrying an injured soldier in his arms. "We need help over here!," stated Moving intuitively, my training grabbed the front stage as I hurried to help. Weighing Adrian, I said "What happened?," and felt the flames coming from his body. "Ambush," None of them were marching in our direction. He responded with a tense voice; they were waiting. His words had great weight; an ambush meant betrayal, and they made my spine cold. I watched Adrian while we tried to stabilize the injured. Good and strong, under his control was darkness. I detected in him a deep-rooted shame echoing mine that seemed to follow him like a shadow. After rating the troops, I momentarily went away to collect my breath. Adrian trailed along, slanted toward the wall opposite me. You're really excellent at this; he whispered, his voice softer now, almost weak. Startled by his realism, I said, "I try to do my best." Still, it never feels like plenty. His eyes darkened, and I sensed loss lingering about them. You go more often than most. Your efforts assist to save lives. A shout from the entryway tore through before I could answer. "Captain Novak!--"— Panic etched on his face, a young soldier ran toward us. "They intend to launch still another attack! They are aware of our residence. Adrian's expression tightened, and I started to flutter with anxiety. "We have to get away. These days. My instincts grabbed hold as he turned to lead the way. "What about the people?" Here we cannot turn away from them! Stress tingling his voice, "There's no time!" he exclaimed. " If we slow down leaving now, we will all be dead." Right then, I felt my decisions weigh less. Too many lives had been wasted in the atrocities of war; I could not desert those still in need of help. "I'm not going anywhere without them," I said, voice calm but hand shaking still. Adrian halted, apprehension flickering over his features. Sofia, not every one of them can be saved. "No," my stiff reply said, "no." Maybe I could save some, though. His manner softened, respect danced across the conflict. You're courageous, he replied, nearly gently. But you have to grasp the risk here. Every day presents danger, I remarked. And I decide every day on combat. Reluctantly agreeing, he went away quite respectfully following my wish. "Excellent. We will support them both. Still, we have to run. Adrenaline rushed through me as we returned inside the ward and heard firing outside. Working quickly, I guided the other nurses toward the back exit to assist with patient forced movement. Clearly filled with urgency, the anxiety was rising every second. Alert for whatever threat could find us, Adrian stood at the entrance. From his demeanor, I could sense the will and weight of obligation bearing down on him. But simultaneously I felt a flutter of something else—a bond developing between us among the tumult. A huge explosion shook the hospital just as we were about to evacuate the last of the occupants. Dust blew over us as the walls shook. I stopped feeling as panic tore across the room. order everyone off! Fear driving my voice, I shouted. Adrian arrived swiftly grasping my arm. "We have to go straight now!!". I heard injured wailing once again as we headed toward the back exit. My decisions carried immense weight, the lives at peril, my obligations. I came to see then that I was more than simply a nurse—a warrior. But darkness descended across when we got to the door. Then the warlord stalking our city, Viktor Petrov appeared. Armed men on his side, he stood there smiling grimly. "Captain Novak," he said, his voice silky and contemptuous. "I found your visiting pattern interesting." Adrian's jaw clenched, and I could sense his rage growing inside him. Shouting "Get back!" he drove me behind him. Petrov laughed, a terrible sound that made me shake. You think you could guard her? How commendable, yet you fall short. My heart hammered looking between Adrian and Petrov. The air buzzed with tension, much as with electricity. The gravity of our circumstances sinking in, I said, "We can't let him take us." Turning to face me, Adrian looked sharp. "Stick right next to me." We will battle together whatever natural path of events calls. I became really determined at that exact time. Not just a nurse but also a fighter ready to stand next to him. We confronted the darkness together; our fate connected in a fight only starting now. Petrov went forward; the world around me away and my attention switched to the struggle still to come. It had never felt so brittle the line dividing life from death, love from loss. I was ready to boldly confront the approaching anarchic tsunami. I sensed that. Just before the confrontation started, I spotted Lucas, one of my boyhood buddies, behind Petrov. My heart plummeted when he looked at me, doubt and suffering visible on his face. Then I realized the stakes outweighed my expectations for dream fulfillment. As I prepared for the fight, the final traces of my previous life vanished. Walking a fresh route together over the darkness, Adrian and I would fight not only for survival but also for the possibility of a brighter future among the rubble of our lost innocence. The foreign loomed and the war had only just started.

Sofia's POV The morning sun struggled to breach the thick clouds surrounding Prague, enveloping the city in a sad pallor. I stood there, the cold glass of the hospital window pushed up against my forehead. I watched the half-empty yet colorful streets pulsating with opposition. Though as a nurse I had been educated to perceive life in tones of hope, the outside world seemed monochromatic, shadow-covered. The windows trembled from the echoes of far-off artillery, a sobering reminder that chaos touched all aspects of life. Tomas passed a year ago, yet even now the suffering in my heart remained fresh, a wound not healing. I had joined a different kind of war—one driven with compassion and the will to save lives—while the city I loved had become a battlefield. "Mis Novotna!" A voice shocked me back to the present from within my ideas. It was Dr. Pavel, worry wrinkling over his forehead. Patients showing up here come from the front lines. Do you have what you need? I turned to nod just once at him. Sure, Doctor. I'm ready. "Good," adds We need all hands on deck, " he remarked in a steady but firm voice. "Today we are expected to be losing significantly." His remarks were weighted and a somber reminder of the reality we shared. Adrenaline shot through me, a known feeling pushing me toward activity. As I traversed the busy hallways, I kept cognizant of the tasks ahead. Every step seemed deliberate, the hum of the hospital encircling me like a veil. When I got to the triage area, chaos ruled. Medics rushed to and fro, tending to the injured flood of people with agonized and anxious faces. Hands moving with learned accuracy, I began working. As I treated every patient, they shared stories of bravery, grief, and love. 'Over here!' One teenage warrior yelled, his voice breaking. "We need help with this one!". I rushed over to see a man laboring for breath while blood leaked through his bandages. I knelt beside him trying to calm his fears. Keep at my side. You would be OK, even though I sensed shaking in my own voice. His eyes opened, and for one minute I saw faith take place instead of fear. Said he, "I do not want to die." "You won't," I answered, even though the promise seemed weighty pressing down on me. I rushedly applied pressure and called for supplies, keeping his focus riveted on me. Just keep breathing". Moments dragged out like an eternity, but at last we steadied him. I groaned softly and dabbed at the moisture on my brow. Right now, this was my life—highs and lows, moments of optimism and despair all mixed like the cobblestones of the streets outside. Adrian Novak was across the room, and I watched him while the pandemonium continued around. He was standing straight and demanding attention even among the tumult. His green eyes gazed about, laced with weariness and will. I considered his look when he rushed into the hospital just the day before, carrying an injured friend in his arms. That moment had let me see a duality—strength and fragility living inside him—interesting. Not much more had I communicated with him since the ambush. Though I knew little about his past, tales of him flew about like leaves caught in a storm. Though he was a military hero and a resistance captain, he was shadowed. I wondered what battles he fought within himself. He cried, "Miss Novotna," drawing me from my reverie. I went over, my heart thumping for causes I cannot exactly understand. There abound accounts of still another ambush in the northern region. They think they might face penalties. I nodded, tummy knotted with anxiety. "How many are hurt?" Too much. We need every support we can get, he stated in a serious voice. "Are you game to trip with me?" There hung the words, and my pulse quickened. Having spent so long in this hospital, sheltered from the crimes outside, I now yearned to do more. really. Resolve growing inside me, then I left. "Good," he said, fluttering respect in his eyes. "We may take advantage of your knowledge. In ten minutes meet me at the door. As I set my instruments, excitement blended with fear. Walking into the future, I was leaving behind the protection of the hospital. Still, the thought of helping people in need set something ablaze within me. Expecting a pulse hammer, I met Adrian at the door. He set the speed; we rushed over the city, the noises of war resounding far away. Every step seemed like a trip into a foreign cosmos, one filled with risk and ambiguity. "Stay close," he counseled, glancing back at me as we negotiated the small tunnels. "We are not sure what we are signing into." "Understood," I answered, my voice cool. The weight of the moment was dragging down, a mix of exhilaration and fear coursed through me. As we headed north, the atmosphere altered. Tension exploded from the ground up, and I sensed a storm developing. Adrian took me to a makeshift triage center where medics were already treating injuries. The chaotic scene was filled with soldiers barking commands and injured people screaming. " Get me a tourniquet!" I followed Adrian, ready to help him shout to one of the medics. Among the tumult, I lost time. With every life I touched beating in my heart, I moved amongst the wounded providing consolation and sympathy. Still, a great explosion shook the planet and disorder once more emerged. " Seek cover!" Pulling me behind a nearby wall, Adrian sobbed as debris spilled all around us. Adrenaline raced through me as I pressed up to the cold stone. My heart thrashed. Adrian turned around, and I could see the horror in his eyes; his defensive reflexive action started. His voice strained, he asked, "Are you okay?" "I'm fine," I answered, but I could feel tremors in my hands. Though this was different, I was anxious previously. It felt raw, real, and terrible. "Stay close to me," he counseled, and I nodded, feeling his weight. Together we were facing an unknown future. Blood streaming down his arm, a soldier lurched toward us just then. His voice raspy, he gasped, "We need help!" Adrian answered fast, but as he did I experienced clarity. I was involved in something more than just nursing; I was more than that. I continued forward, my voice steady in the turmoil. "I can help," I answered, and went to do so. Every patient we saw made the weight of obligation more burdenful, but so did my will. I would see the road I had chosen through. Adrian and I worked well, a subtle knowledge growing between us. In those days, I felt a relationship formed in the furnace of conflict transcending the chaos all around us. But another explosion shook the planet and sent us down just as we were steadying the last victim. I tried to find my bearings, ground hard and anguish scorching over my side. "Sofia! The fuzz cleared Adrian's words, and I turned to see him coming at me. Written on his face, concern showed there as he got me moving. "Are you damaged??" Heart thumping, I answered, "No, just... a little shook." Good," he said, a swirl of relief washing over him. We have to leave this area. As we turned to run, a shadow dropped over us. Viktor Petrov stood at the entrance flanked by armed troops. Knowing we were captured, my stomach dropped. Petrov drawled, "Captain Novak," his smile as cold. "Expected not to find you here." Adrian moved defensively ahead of me, his eyes turning harsh. Petrov, none of your company's operations here are engaged. Come with us. Petrov laughed; a low, disdainful sound. Oh, but right now my company is You see, I restrict you getting off. Not acting as you have done. I felt a chill slinking down my back. Adrian had done something that landed us in this position. Possibilities whirled around me, each darker than the next. Adrian warned, his voice low and lethal, "Get out of our way." Petrov hated shining in his eyes. Rather, what? You will challenge me. so nostalgic. He gestured to his men, who then advanced carrying elevated weapons. Adrian's posture grew stiff, and I could feel the strain radiating across us. Trying to ease the situation, I said, "We don't want any trouble," but my voice shook with panic. Petrov responded, "too late for that, my dear," fixating on me. "I think right now a little game is appropriate." Once more, he gestured before I could react; chaos erupted with bullets. I crouched behind Adrian, as the world whirled in noise and activity. He roared, dragging me along as we dashed towards

Chapter 2: Beneath the Surface

Sofia's POV Adrian walked me across the falling gate, the sounds of the ambush disappearing behind us. Not only from the exhilaration but also from the weight of what we had just gone through; my heart raced. The alleyways of Prague felt like a maze now, shadows hiding around every corner as though the city itself were breathing. "Are you good?" Looking back to be sure we were not being followed, Adrian asked in a low but strong voice. His shoulders revealed strain and his forehead wrinkled in sympathy. Still with somewhat trembling palms, "I'm good," I said. "just slightly startled." "Startled?," he responded, his voice tinged with incredulity. "We were just let off at Sofia." I glanced at him, and in that moment I felt a connection formed in the furnace of anarchy between us. " I am aware. Still, I have gone through more. One could assume I attempted to reassure him even though my heart was throbbing too loudly for me to feel calm. "Let us stay on this road." With a tight hand, Ad
