Annotation

Julian Vance walked away from the glittering lights of the silver screen at the peak of his career, choosing a quiet, domestic life with his brilliant violinist wife, Seraphina Sterling, and their adorable three-year-old daughter, Stella. For eight years, he was content being a forgotten name in the industry. That is, until he uncovers a jarring truth: he is merely a doomed supporting character in a twisted novel—destined to abandon his loving family for a manipulative rising star named Vivian Thorne. According to the original script, Vivian is about to entice him back into the spotlight with a blockbuster drama. Looking at his sweet daughter giggling on the sofa and his beautiful wife beside him, Julian doesn't hesitate. He throws the drama's script straight into the trash and signs up for a hit parenting variety show instead: "My Dad is a Superhero." No one expected the "washed-up" actor to steal the spotlight, let alone become a global sensation overnight. But what truly breaks the internet isn't just Julian's effortless charm or Stella's heart-melting sweetness—it's how a wholesome parenting show completely transforms into a heart-fluttering romance reality show whenever Seraphina makes an appearance. As Vivian's heavily-funded drama stalls without its leading man, Julian is busy rewriting his own destiny, protecting his family, and falling in love with his wife all over again. Who says a retired movie king can't have a perfect second act?

Chapter 1

The morning sun filtered through the high, arched windows of the kitchen, casting a golden glow over the polished marble countertops. Julian Vance stood before the stove, dressed in a simple pair of grey lounge pants and a fitted black tee that did little to hide his lean, athletic build. With practiced grace, he flipped a fluffy pancake in the pan, the rich aroma of vanilla, maple syrup, and freshly brewed espresso filling the warm air.

Suddenly, the quiet harmony of the kitchen was interrupted by the rapid patter-patter of small feet.

Julian smiled, pausing his movements. He turned around just in time to catch a tiny, three-year-old bundle of energy who came barreling into his legs. She was wearing plush white slippers with floppy pink rabbit ears that bounced with every step.

"Daddy!" Stella squealed, wrapping her chubby, dimpled arms around his knee.

Julian knelt, scooping his little princess into his arms. "Well, aren't you up early today, sweetheart?"

Stella blinked her massive, glossy dark eyes, her long lashes fluttering innocently as she pointed a finger toward the pantry. "I was very good and got up all by myself. Can a very good girl get an organic strawberry yogurt bar?"

Julian chuckled, tapping her small button nose. So, that was the real reason behind her early-morning diligence.

He didn't immediately indulge her, but instead opened the refrigerator, pulling out the coveted yogurt bar. "Tell you what. If Stella wants this treat, she has to help Daddy with a very important mission first."

Stella nodded solemnly, her face instantly turning serious. "What mission, Daddy?"

"Go upstairs and wake up Mommy for breakfast."

"Yes, Captain!" Stella saluted clumsily, wiggling out of his arms. She spun around and ran back toward the stairs, the pink bunny ears on her slippers flopping wildly behind her.

Julian watched her safely navigate the steps before turning back to the stove, a soft, indulgent smile playing on his lips.

Upstairs in the master bedroom, the heavy blackout curtains kept the room in a state of tranquil twilight. Beneath the soft, silk-blend duvet, Seraphina Sterling was fast asleep, her long, elegant dark hair splayed across the pillows like a dark halo.

The door creaked open, and a tiny head peeked in. Stella crept silently across the thick carpet, climbed onto the edge of the mattress, and crawled on all fours until she reached her mother's side.

Leaning down, Stella pressed her soft, warm lips against Seraphina’s cheek, delivering a loud, dramatic smooch.

"Mommy, wake up! Breakfast is ready!" Stella whispered loudly.

Seraphina stirred. The sweet, damp kiss on her cheek was a daily ritual, though usually delivered by a much larger, warmer pair of lips. She blinked her eyes open, her vision adjusting to the dim light to find her daughter’s chubby face hovering inches from her own.

A gentle laugh escaped Seraphina's throat. She reached out, pulling the fragrant, warm little body into her arms and burying her face in Stella’s neck. "How is my baby up so early today?"

"Daddy said early birds get yogurt bars!" Stella giggled, squirming happily in her mother's embrace.

With her mission successfully accomplished, Stella proudly marched into the adjoining master bathroom, dragging her small wooden step stool to the sink. Seraphina followed, still slightly bleary-eyed but smiling.

Stella climbed onto her stool, reached for her small toothbrush, and squeezed a dollop of strawberry-flavored toothpaste onto it. She then reached over, grabbed her mother's toothbrush, and clumsily squeezed some mint paste onto it as well.

"Since Stella helped Daddy wake up Mommy, Stella is going to take care of Mommy today!" the little girl declared proudly.

Seraphina's heart melted. "Thank you, sweetie. You are the best helper."

Downstairs, Julian finished plating the breakfast and set the stove to warm. He shrugged off his apron and made his way upstairs. Walking into the bedroom, he found the bed empty, but the sound of giggles drew him to the bathroom.

Through the open door, he saw his wife and daughter standing side by side. Seraphina was trying to tame Stella's wild morning bedhead with a brush, her brows furrowed in intense concentration. Styling hair had never been the world-class violinist's strong suit.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, a soft smirk gracing his features. "Need some professional help, ladies?"

Seraphina looked up, letting out a sigh of relief. She handed him the brush and hair ties. "Yes, please. I don't know how you make those French braids look so effortless."

Julian stepped in, gently taking the brush. Within minutes, his deft fingers had woven Stella's wild curls into a neat, intricate braid, securing it with a small floral clip.

"Perfect," Stella cheered, looking in the mirror.

Seraphina smiled, wrapping her arms around Julian's waist from behind, resting her chin on his shoulder. "What would we do without you, Mr. Vance?"

Julian turned his head, kissing her temple. "You’d probably both go to school looking like wild woodland creatures."

"Hey!" Seraphina laughed, swatting his arm playfully.

Before Julian could reply, his phone began to vibrate on the bedside table outside. He stepped out of the bathroom and picked it up. The caller ID showed a familiar name: Carter Stone, his longtime talent agent.

Julian swiped to answer, walking out onto the master bedroom’s private balcony. "Morning, Carter."

"Julian! Thank God you picked up," Carter's voice boomed through the speaker, thick with excitement. "I just got my hands on an incredible script. It's The Regent's Shadow, written by Thomas Vance himself. It’s a masterpiece, Julian. You need to read this."

Julian’s brows knitted slightly. "Thomas Vance? Why is he reaching out to me?"

Thomas was a legend in the industry—an brilliant but notoriously difficult showrunner whose dark, political historical dramas had won international acclaim. But Julian had been out of the spotlight for eight years. A script from Thomas should have gone to the current A-listers, not a retired actor.

"The production is in a tight spot," Carter explained, lowering his voice. "Thomas wanted complete creative control and insisted on casting an absolute newcomer, a girl named Vivian Thorne, as the female lead. It p*ss*d off Aegis Holdings, their primary financial backer. Aegis pulled their funding. Now, Thomas is desperate. He needs a heavy-hitter actor with massive prestige to anchor the project and attract new investors. If you sign on, the film is saved, and your comeback will be the biggest story of the year."

Julian looked back through the glass doors. Inside the brightly lit room, Seraphina was helping Stella put on her cardigan, both of them laughing.

"Stella is starting preschool in a few weeks," Julian said softly, his voice steady but resolute. "Seraphina has her autumn tour coming up. My family needs me here, Carter. I'm not ready for a comeback."

Carter let out a heavy sigh over the line. "Julian, I know you love your family. But this isn't just any script. It’s the kind of role that defines a career. Just read it. I'll have a courier drop off a physical copy."

"Carter, I—"

"Just read it, Julian. Talk to you later." The line went dead.

Julian stared at his phone, letting out a breath. He went back inside to join his family for breakfast, pushing the thoughts of the script to the back of his mind.

Later that afternoon, after Seraphina had taken Stella out for a playdate, the doorbell rang. Julian opened the front door, but there was no courier in sight—only a plain, unmarked brown paper package resting on the welcome mat.

Julian picked it up and walked into his study. He tore open the packaging, expecting to find the heavy leather-bound script of The Regent's Shadow.

Instead, what slid out of the paper was a book.

It had a garish, neon-colored cover featuring stylized, dramatic illustrations of a man and a woman. It looked like a cheap, trashy web-novel paperback.

Frowning in confusion, Julian flipped the book open to the prologue. His eyes skimmed the first few lines, and his entire body suddenly froze.

There, printed in bold black ink, was his own name.

...Julian Vance, the former Movie King, found himself utterly captivated by the pure, innocent charm of the rising star, Vivian Thorne. Unable to bear the cold, suffocating reality of his marriage to the proud heiress Seraphina Sterling, Julian made the ultimate choice. He signed the divorce papers, abandoning his wife and young daughter, Stella, to throw himself entirely into Vivian's waiting arms...

Julian’s grip tightened on the pages, his knuckles turning white as the absurd words stared back at him.

Chapter 2

Julian stared at the bold, offensive words printed on the coarse paper.

...Julian Vance accepted the lead role in "The Regent's Shadow," a decision that catapulted him back into global stardom. On set, he met the pure, enchanting Vivian Thorne...

...Contrasted with the gentle, understanding Vivian, Julian realized he could no longer tolerate his unequal, cold marriage to Seraphina Sterling. He made the final decision to divorce...

Julian read the paragraphs twice, his jaw tightening. Without a single word of hesitation, he crumpled the pages, tossed the entire book along with the shipping paper back into the stainless-steel trash can, and kicked the lid shut.

He had absolutely zero interest in some cheap, trashy self-insert fanfiction written by a delusional mind fantasizing about his life.

Still, a deep frown etched into his forehead. His agent, Carter Stone, must have lost his absolute mind to allow a package like this to be sent to his home.
