Résumé
Elara Veyne has spent her entire life believing she is nothing more than an ordinary omega with a silent wolf. She has no idea that the silence is not weakness—it is a warning. On her twenty-fifth birthday, her wolf finally awakens, revealing a terrifying crown of black thorns around its neck. An ancient symbol believed to have vanished centuries ago. The Thorn-Bearer has returned. And the moment Alpha Kael Draven sees the mark, he knows exactly what she is. His family has guarded one command for generations: if the Thorn-Bearer ever awakens, she must die. But Kael's wolf has other plans. As forbidden secrets rise from forgotten ruins and Elara begins uncovering the truth behind her bloodline, she realizes the greatest danger may not be the Alpha ordered to kill her. It may be the ancient power awakening inside her. Because some crowns are meant to rule. Others are meant to imprison monsters.
Chapter 1
THE WOLF THAT FINALLY SPOKE
The first time Elara heard her wolf speak, it didn't call her name. It screamed one word. “Run.” Elara froze.
The voice came again, trembling with fear. “The Alpha has come to kill us.” Her breath caught. For twenty-five years, her wolf had been silent. Not quiet. Silent. No voice in her dreams. No warning during danger. No response when she tried to reach for it. Nothing. And now, on the morning of her twenty-fifth birthday, it was afraid. Elara gripped the edge of the wooden table.
“Mara?”
The older woman looked up from the cup in her hands. “What is it?” “My wolf…” Mara's face changed. Elara noticed.
“You heard me?” Mara slowly put the cup down. “What did she say?”
Elara stared at her. “You knew she could speak?” “No.” The answer came too quickly.
Elara narrowed her eyes. Before she could question her, a howl echoed through the village. Then another. Mara stood.
“Get away from the window.” “Why?” “Elara, now.” Something in her voice made Elara obey. She stepped away from the window. Outside, the village had gone strangely quiet.
Then came the sound of horses or perhaps wolves moving through the forest. Mara rushed to the door and locked it.
Elara's heart began pounding. “Who is coming?” Mara didn't answer.
A shadow passed across the window. Then another. Elara's wolf whispered:
“He's here.”
“Who?”
A deep howl answered from somewhere beyond the trees. Mara's face went pale.
“The Alpha."
Far beyond Ashbourne, a black wolf stopped at the edge of the forest.
Kael Draven stood beside it. Twenty-nine years old. Alpha of Blackridge. His guards waited behind him. No one spoke.
They knew why they had come. Kael looked toward the distant village.
“Search every house.”
One of his men hesitated. “And if we find her?” Kael's jaw tightened.
He already knew the answer. The command had been given to every Draven Alpha for generations. Find the Thorn-Bearer. Kill her.
Before the Crown opens. Kael had heard the story since childhood. The Thorn-Bearer was supposed to be a curse. A bloodline that had nearly destroyed the ancient wolf clans. A bloodline that should have disappeared centuries ago. His father had made the command clear. If she ever returns, she must die. Kael looked toward Ashbourne. “Find her.”
The guards disappeared into the trees. Kael remained behind.
His wolf growled. Not in anger. In warning.
Kael frowned. “What?”
The wolf gave no answer. It had been restless for weeks. And for three nights, Kael had dreamed of the same woman.
A woman standing beneath a black moon. Her face hidden. Black vines wrapped around her throat. And behind her stood seven enormous wolves. Six faced away. Only the seventh looked directly at him. Kael had never understood the dream. Until now. A sharp pain suddenly tore across his palm. He looked down. Blood appeared across his skin. Then a voice whispered inside his mind.
“She is awake.”
Kael's head snapped up. His wolf was staring toward Ashbourne. For the first time, Kael felt something he had never felt from his own wolf. Fear.
Inside the house, Elara pressed herself against the wall. Footsteps moved outside. One. Then two. Then several. Mara grabbed her wrist. “There's something you need to know.
” Elara looked at her. “What?”
Mara hesitated. Then— BANG!
The front door shook. Elara jumped. Mara's grip tightened.
“Whatever happens, don't fight them.”
“Who are they?”
Another impact hit the door. BANG! Wood splintered.
Mara looked directly into Elara's eyes. “Your life is about to change.”
The door burst open. But no one entered. Silence. Elara stared into the doorway. Then a voice came from outside.
“Search the house.”
Mara pulled Elara toward the back room.
“Move.”
They barely made it three steps before Elara's throat began to burn. She gasped. Her hands flew to her neck.
“Mara!” The pain intensified.
Something dark appeared beneath her skin. A thin black line. It curled around her throat. Then another. Then another. Like thorns growing beneath the surface. Mara stared at it in horror.
“No…”
“What is happening to me?”
Mara backed away.
“Elara…”
“What is it?”
The black mark suddenly flashed. Elara screamed. And the world disappeared.
She was standing in darkness. No house. No Mara. No village. Only a vast black sky. A pale moon hung above her.
Then it turned black.
Elara looked around.
Seven enormous wolves stood in a circle. Six had their backs turned.
They wouldn't look at her. Only one faced her. The seventh. It was larger than the others.
Its eyes were crimson.
And around its throat was a crown of living black thorns. Elara couldn't breathe.
“Why are you looking at me?”
The wolf stepped forward. The ground cracked beneath its paws.
Elara took a step back.
“Who are you?”
The wolf stared into her eyes.
Then it spoke.
“I am what they buried.”
Elara woke screaming.
She was back in the house. Mara was holding her shoulders.
“What did you see?”
Elara could barely breathe.
“Seven wolves.”
Mara went completely still.
“One of them…” Elara touched her throat.
“It had the same mark.”
Mara whispered:
“The Crown.”
Before Elara could ask what that meant— The door opened.
Kael Draven stepped inside. His eyes immediately found hers. Everything stopped. Kael's wolf surged forward. Mine. Kael froze. His breathing changed.
He had never heard his wolf say that.
Not about anyone.
Not once.
Elara felt the same strange pull. Her wolf stirred.
Then whispered:
“Don't trust him.”
Kael stared at her.
“You…”
His eyes dropped to the black mark around her throat.
The blood drained from his face.
“The Thorn-Bearer.”
Elara stepped back.
“What did you call me?” Kael didn't answer.
His wolf spoke again.
Mine.
Kael clenched his fists.
“Silence.”
His guards looked at him in confusion. Kael had never spoken to his wolf aloud before. He reached for the weapon at his side. The command his family had given him echoed through his mind. Kill her.
His hand tightened around the hilt. He looked at Elara. She was trembling. She didn't look like a monster. She looked terrified. Just a woman. Yet the mark around her throat pulsed like something alive. Kael raised his weapon.
Elara's wolf screamed:
“Run!” Kael prepared to strike.
Then his wolf growled. “No.” Kael froze.
His eyes widened. His wolf had never challenged him. Not once. Kael had commanded his wolf since the day he became Alpha.
His wolf obeyed. Always. But now— It was giving him an order.
Because of her.
Kael slowly lowered the weapon. His guards stared at him. Elara stared too. Kael couldn't explain what was happening. He looked at the woman standing before him. The woman his family had ordered him to kill. The woman his wolf had just claimed. And for the first time in his life, Kael Draven couldn't tell which voice he was supposed to obey.
"His family."
"Or his wolf."
Then the black mark around Elara's throat pulsed again. Somewhere far beneath the earth, something answered. A deep, ancient growl. Kael looked toward the ground.
Elara's wolf whispered: “It knows she's awake.”
Kael looked back at her.
“Who?” Elara's eyes filled with fear.
“I don't know.” A second growl shook the walls.
Then— “The Crown has opened.” Kael's face went pale. And somewhere in the darkness beneath Ashbourne, something opened its eyes.
Chapter 2
THE MARK BENEATH THE SKIN
The thing beneath Ashbourne had opened its eyes. Elara could feel it. Not through her ears. Through her bones. She stared at Kael. He was still standing in the doorway, his hand resting on the weapon at his side. His wolf had just called her mine. But he looked almost as shocked as she felt.
“What did you say?” Elara asked.
Kael's eyes narrowed. “I didn't.”
“You did.”
“I said nothing.” Elara glanced at Mara.
The older woman was staring at Kael. Then at Elara. Her expression told Elara that she knew something.
“You heard him,” Elara said.
Mara didn't answer.
“Elara,” Kael said quietly,
“what did your wolf say?” Elara hesitated.
“Nothing.”
Kael's gaze sharpened.
“Don't lie to me.”
“You just did the same thing.”
Before he could respond, a howl echoed outside. Kael turned toward the door. His guards shouted from the street.
“Alpha!”
Kael
