Résumé
Secrets Beneath the Campus Precious has everything most university students dream of wealth, confidence, beauty, and a life of privilege. But beneath her perfect image lies a secret she has spent months trying to bury. When she returns to university, she reunites with her close friends: brilliant scholar Ogechi, unpredictable Gentle, outspoken Nkechi, Sandra, Bright, and calm Mary. Then there is Peter, a quiet student who unexpectedly falls deeply for Precious. What begins as an ordinary semester quickly turns into a dangerous mystery when Peter receives anonymous warnings about Precious. Strange messages, hidden photographs, a missing man, and a mysterious stranger begin exposing secrets that reach far beyond campus. As friendships are tested and trust becomes difficult to find, Peter realizes that protecting Precious may mean uncovering a truth she desperately wants to keep hidden. But someone is watching them. And the closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous the questions become. On a campus where everyone has something to hide, can love and friendship survive the secrets beneath it all?
Chapter 1 : THE NEW SEMESTER
The meeting ended just after sunset. The sky had turned a deep shade of orange and purple, the kind of twilight that made everything feel suspended between day and night. Ogechi gathered the research notes while everyone else began making plans for the next day. She stacked the papers carefully, her movements deliberate, as if organizing them could somehow organize the chaos that was about to unfold.
"Same place tomorrow," she reminded them. "And please, nobody should come without doing their part."
Bright groaned, stretching his arms above his head. "We're already being threatened on the first day."
"You'll survive," Mary said, rolling her eyes but smiling.
The group laughed as they started walking toward the hostel area. Their footsteps echoed softly against the pavement, a rhythmic sound that matched the chirping of crickets beginning their evening song. Laughter bounced between the trees, light and carefree, the kind of sound that belonged to people who had no idea what was coming.
Peter stayed behind for a moment. He had something on his mind, something heavy that sat in his chest like a stone. He watched the others disappear around the corner, their voices fading into the distance.
Precious was a few steps ahead, talking to Sandra and Nkechi. The evening breeze moved gently through the trees, and the fading sunlight cast long shadows across the walkway. Her hair caught the last golden rays, turning it into something that looked almost unreal. She gestured with her hands as she spoke, animated and alive, completely in her element.
Peter watched her. He had spent the entire day trying not to admit what was happening to him. Every time she laughed, he found himself looking. Every time she spoke, he found himself listening more closely than he should. It wasn't working.
He liked her. Not because she came from money. Not because everyone noticed her whenever she entered a room. He liked the person he had slowly discovered beneath all of that. The way she listened when others spoke. The way she remembered small details about people. The quiet kindness she showed when she thought nobody was watching.
The problem was that he had no idea whether Precious saw him the same way.
"Peter."
He turned. It was Gentle. The playful smile was gone from his face, replaced by something Peter had never seen before. A seriousness that made him seem older, heavier somehow.
"You really like her, don't you?"
Peter froze. His heart hammered against his ribs. "Like who?"
Gentle glanced toward Precious. "Don't insult my intelligence."
Peter said nothing. There was no point in denying it. Gentle had always been too sharp for lies.
Gentle stepped closer. "Just be careful."
Peter frowned. "Why?"
Gentle's expression changed. Something flickered behind his eyes, something that looked almost like pity. "Because there's something you don't know."
Before Peter could ask what he meant, Gentle walked away. His footsteps were quick, urgent, as if he wanted to put distance between himself and the conversation.
"Wait." Peter's voice came out sharper than he intended.
Gentle stopped but didn't turn around. His shoulders were tense, his back rigid.
"What don't I know?"
A few seconds passed. The wind rustled through the leaves overhead. Somewhere in the distance, a door slammed shut.
Then Gentle looked over his shoulder. His face was half-hidden in shadow. "Ask Precious about what happened during the holiday."
He continued walking.
Peter stood there, confused. During the holiday? What could have happened? The question burned in his mind, demanding an answer he didn't have.
He looked toward Precious. She was still laughing with the others, completely unaware of the conversation. Her laughter rang out clear and bright, a sound that belonged to someone with nothing to hide.
Then her phone rang.
The sound cut through the evening air like a knife. She glanced at the screen, and her smile disappeared. Just like that. Gone.
"Excuse me," she told Sandra. Her voice was different now. Tighter.
She walked away from the group and answered. Peter couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but he could see the change in her expression. Her face became pale, drained of all color. Her free hand trembled slightly at her side.
"No," she whispered. The word was so quiet Peter almost didn't catch it.
A pause. She closed her eyes briefly, as if in pain.
"I told you not to call me here."
Another pause. Her grip on the phone tightened.
Her voice dropped. "Nobody knows."
Peter instinctively took a step forward. Something in those words made his blood run cold.
Precious turned. Their eyes met. For a second, neither moved. The world seemed to stop spinning. In her gaze, Peter saw something he had never seen before. Fear. Real, raw fear.
Then Precious ended the call. She hurried back toward her friends, forcing a smile onto her face. It was a terrible smile, thin and fragile, like glass about to shatter.
"Everything okay?" Mary asked.
"Yes."
But Peter knew she was lying. He had heard enough. Nobody knows. The words repeated in his mind, over and over, like a warning he couldn't ignore.
He looked across the walkway at Gentle. Gentle was watching him. And for the first time since returning to campus, the playful boy everyone knew seemed genuinely serious. There was a weight in his gaze, a knowledge he wasn't sharing.
Peter's phone suddenly vibrated. He looked down. An unknown number had sent him a message.
You think you know Precious. You don't.
Peter stared at the screen. His thumb hovered over the reply button, but no words came. His mind raced, trying to make sense of what he was reading.
Another message arrived.
Stay away from her if you want to know the truth.
He looked up. Precious was already walking away, her back straight, her head held high. She looked like someone carrying a burden too heavy to show.
And somewhere behind the buildings, a figure stood watching the entire group. Hidden in the shadows, unmoving, patient. Someone who knew everything. Someone who had been waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
The new semester had barely begun. Yet someone had already decided to destroy the secret Precious had fought so hard to hide.
Chapter 2 : THE SECRET
Peter barely slept that night.
The two messages from the unknown number remained on his phone, but their words had already settled heavily in his mind.
You think you know Precious. You don't.
Stay away from her if you want to know the truth.
He had read them so many times that he could almost hear the words whenever he closed his eyes.
Whoever had sent them knew something about Precious.
Something serious.
Peter had considered calling the number, but each time his finger hovered over the call button, he stopped.
What if the person was trying to deceive him?
What if it was someone who simply wanted to cause trouble?
Or worse, what if everything was true?
At about two in the morning, he finally put his phone beneath his pillow and tried to sleep.
It didn't work.
By sunrise, Peter had already made a decision.
He would not accuse Precious.
He would not tell the others.
He would first find out
