Deskripsyon

Mia Harper has spent years resenting the man her mother married. Ethan Cole was everything she learned to distrust: controlled, powerful, and emotionally unreachable. He lived in the same house yet remained a stranger, a constant reminder of every time her mother chose someone else over her. When Vanessa cancels their long-planned lakeside trip at the last minute, Mia is forced to go alone with him. The remote cabin offers no escape, no signal, and no buffer. What begins as cold silence and years of buried anger slowly shifts into something neither of them expected. A near accident on the wet road. An argument that cuts too deep. Accidental touches that linger longer than they should. In the close quarters of the shared cabin and the isolating beauty of the wilderness, the careful distance they both maintained starts to collapse. Resentment turns to awareness. Awareness turns to hunger. One night the line disappears completely, and what follows is a dangerous addiction neither can stop. Stolen touches become desperate nights. Guilt wars with raw need. By the time they return to the city, the secret is already living under the same roof as the woman who still legally binds them as family. They know it is wrong. They know it could destroy everything. They keep choosing it anyway. This is a story of forbidden desire, emotional wounds, and the kind of passion that refuses to stay hidden. Intense, explicit, and impossible to put down. Mature audiences only.

Chapter 1

Mia Harper folded the last shirt and pressed it flat into her suitcase. The fabric felt cool under her fingers. She had been packing for almost an hour, moving slowly on purpose. Every item she placed inside the bag felt heavier than it should. This lakeside trip had sat on the family calendar for months. She had dreaded it from the first day it appeared.

Her mother loved big plans. She loved announcing them in front of people. She loved the idea of a perfect family weekend by the water. What she did not love was actually showing up for them.

Mia zipped the suitcase closed and sat on the edge of her bed. The room was quiet. Afternoon light came through the half-open blinds and made long stripes across the floor. She stared at the packed bag and felt the familiar tightness in her chest. Three days in a cabin with her mother and Ethan Cole. Three days of forced smiles and careful silence. She had already practiced the version of herself she would need to be.

Polite. Distant. Untouchable.

Her phone rang.

The sound cut through the quiet like a knife. Mia looked at the screen.

Vanessa.

Of course it was Vanessa.

She let it ring twice before she answered.

“Hello.”

“Mia, darling.” Her mother’s voice came bright and rushed, the way it always did when she was about to disappoint someone. “I have news. Bad news, I’m afraid.”

Mia stayed silent. She already knew the shape of what was coming.

“There’s a critical board emergency in Seattle,” Vanessa said. “I have to fly out tonight. The vote is tomorrow morning. I can’t miss it.”

Mia’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“You’re canceling.”

“I’m not canceling the trip. I’m simply unable to attend. The cabin is already paid for. Non-refundable. Ethan is still going. You should go with him. It would be a shame to waste the whole weekend.”

The words landed hard. Mia stood up and walked to the window. Outside, the street looked ordinary. Cars passed. A neighbor watered his plants. Nothing about the world had changed, yet everything inside her had shifted.

“You want me to go alone with him,” Mia said. Her voice stayed flat.

“You’re twenty-three, not twelve. You’re perfectly capable of spending a few days in a nice cabin. Ethan is family. It will be fine.”

Family.

The word tasted wrong.

Mia closed her eyes. For one brief second, a memory rose up. She was fourteen again, standing in the hallway of this same house the first week after the wedding. She had watched Ethan set a glass of water on the counter for her without being asked. She had thought, Maybe this time it will be different. Maybe this man will stay.

The hope had been small and quiet and stupid.

It had died within months.

She opened her eyes.

“I understand,” Mia said.

“Good. Ethan will pick you up at four. Be ready. And Mia... try not to be difficult. He works very hard. This weekend could be good for both of you.”

The call ended.

Mia lowered the phone and stared at it. Her hand was steady. Her breathing was steady. Inside her chest, something cold and sharp had settled into place.

She looked at the packed suitcase again. For a moment, she considered unpacking everything. She could stay home. She could ignore the trip completely. Vanessa would not even notice until it was too late to matter.

But the thought of her mother’s easy assumption made the cold feeling grow sharper. Vanessa expected her to fold. Vanessa always expected her to fold.

Mia walked back to the bed and rested her hand on the suitcase. She would go. Not for the lake. Not for any false idea of family. She would go so that later, when Vanessa returned from Seattle and her new lover, she would have to face the fact that her daughter had spent the weekend alone with the man she had married and then discarded.

The decision settled over her like a weight she chose to carry.

She checked the time.

Three-forty.

Twenty minutes.

Mia moved through the room with careful steps. She changed into dark jeans and a plain gray sweater. She tied her hair back. She washed her face and put on the smallest amount of makeup, only enough to look awake. She did not want to look like she had tried.

At three fifty-eight, she carried the suitcase downstairs and set it by the front door. The house felt too large and too quiet. Vanessa’s perfume still lingered in the hallway from earlier. Mia opened a window to let it out.

A black Range Rover pulled up to the curb at exactly four o’clock.

Mia watched through the glass as Ethan Cole stepped out. He wore a dark jacket over a black shirt. His hair was neat. His expression was the same controlled mask he always wore in this house. He walked around the car, opened the passenger door, then came up the path.

She opened the front door before he could ring the bell.

“Mia,” he said. His voice was low and even.

“Ethan.”

He looked at the suitcase.

“Is that everything?”

“Yes.”

He picked it up without another word and carried it to the car. Mia locked the house behind her and followed. The afternoon air was cool against her face. She climbed into the passenger seat and closed the door. The interior of the car smelled clean, like leather and something faintly sharp that belonged only to him.

Ethan started the engine. He checked the mirrors, pulled away from the curb, and joined the flow of traffic.

Neither of them spoke.

Mia kept her eyes on the road. The city moved past the windows in a blur of buildings and lights. She could feel him beside her, solid and quiet. The silence between them was not empty. It was thick with every year of careful distance they had kept.

She remembered the first time she had sat in a car with him. She had been fifteen. Vanessa had been late coming out of a restaurant, and Ethan had waited with her in the parking lot. He had not tried to fill the silence with false conversation. He had simply sat there, present and unreadable. She had hated how safe it had felt for a moment.

Now the same silence pressed against her from a different angle.

The Range Rover joined the highway that led north. The buildings began to thin. The sky stretched wider. Mia watched the city shrink in the side mirror and felt a slow, unwanted realization settle in her stomach.

There was no easy way back from this.

She had chosen to come. She had packed the bag and walked out the door. Now the road only went forward, toward the lake and the cabin and three days of shared space with a man she had spent years learning how to ignore.

Ethan drove with both hands on the wheel. His profile stayed calm. He did not glance at her. He did not ask if she was comfortable or if she needed anything. He simply drove, as if the silence was the only language left between them that still made sense.

Mia turned her face toward the window. The city lights grew smaller behind them. The highway opened into longer stretches of trees and open sky. Her pulse beat steadily in her throat.

She had told herself this was only about making Vanessa feel the weight of her absence. She had told herself she could stay cold and distant for three days. She had told herself the cabin was just a place, and Ethan was just the man her mother had married.

But as the last tall buildings disappeared from the rearview mirror, a quiet truth pressed against her ribs.

She was alone with him now.

Really alone.

And there was no easy escape.

Chapter 2

The highway stretched ahead in a long gray line. Trees stood tall on both sides. The sky had turned a dull silver. Mia kept her eyes on the road and counted the minutes in silence.

Ethan drove the way he did everything. Steady. Controlled. Both hands on the wheel. He did not turn on music. He did not ask if she was cold or if she needed to stop. He simply kept the car moving forward at a constant speed.

Mia sat with her hands in her lap. The seat belt crossed her chest in a firm line. She could feel the quiet pressing in from every side. Three hours. That was how long the drive would take. Three hours of this thick silence.

She let her mind open the old list.

The first slight had come only weeks after the wedding. She was fifteen. Vanessa had been late coming home from a charity dinner. Mia had waited in the kitchen with homework spread across the table. Ethan had walked in, seen her, and given a short nod before going upstairs. He had not asked if she
