Four years ago, Clara Rivers was the undisputed queen of the silver screen—until a devastating, calculated betrayal stripped her of her crown, her sanity, and her career. Cast into the shadows of a psychiatric ward while her rivals reigned in her stead, Clara became a forgotten name, a tragic cautionary tale of Hollywood’s fleeting glory. Now, she is back. But she is no longer the naive, fragile starlet they once broke. Armed with a sharper mind, a curvier silhouette, and an undeniable, raw acting talent, Clara is determined to reclaim her throne strictly on her own terms. But the industry that once devoured her is still crawling with monsters—and someone is willing to go to deadly lengths to keep her silent. Enter Julian Cross. The untouchable, aloof king of the box office. For four years, he has waited in the wings, holding onto a love Clara believes was only ever part of a script. To the ruthless vultures of the red carpet, Julian is an unapproachable icon. To Clara, he is a shield against the storm, offering an unconditional warmth she’s not sure she’s whole enough to accept. As Clara climbs her way back into the blinding spotlight, she must navigate a treacherous web of secrets, jealousy, and a sinister plot that threatens more than just her comeback. Can Clara trust the man who promises to catch her when she falls, or will her second act end in the ultimate, unscripted tragedy?

Chapter 1

The cramped kitchen of the Brooklyn apartment was suffocatingly warm, filled with the rich, earthy aroma of truffle and herb-infused butter.

In the small living room, the flat-screen television hummed. The late-night talk show host, with his practiced, glossy smile, introduced the guest of the evening. Across the screen sat Julian Cross, New York’s untamable Oscar-winning darling. He wore a tailored charcoal tuxedo, structured yet relaxed, exuding an effortless elegance that made the flashy studio lights seem cheap.

"Let us welcome the one and only, Julian Cross!" the host bellowed over the roaring applause.

Clara Rivers’s hand paused over the roasted quails she was carefully packing into a thermally insulated box. That voice. It was a phantom melody she hadn't heard in years.

On screen, Julian smiled—a polite, slightly detached curl of his lips. "Please, the 'icon' title belongs to the past. It's getting a bit embarrassing to hear at my age."

Clara didn’t mean to listen, but the dialogue drifted through the steam of her kitchen anyway.

"Speaking of the past," the host leaned in, eyes glittering with sensationalism. "Your breakthrough indie film, Metamorphosis, was incredibly bold. The intimacy was... legendary. You co-starred with Clara Rivers, the former pure sweetheart of cinema. But now—"

The clatter of Clara’s tongs hitting the counter broke the silence. She walked out of the kitchen, her apron stained, and grabbed the remote. Just as she pressed the power button, Julian’s voice on screen shifted. His warm demeanor vanished, replaced by an icy, formidable gravity.

"Clara has left the industry," Julian said, cutting the host off with absolute finality. "There is no need to drag her name into gossip. Furthermore, I have never regarded the intimacy in Metamorphosis as a mere stunt. It was art."

The screen flickered and died into a black void.

Clara stood in the quiet room for a long moment before rushing back to the kitchen. She quickly packed the premium roasted quails, sealing the luxury thermal bags, and tore off the delivery receipt. Today's order was a high-paying private commission—a rare client from the ultra-exclusive gated estates in the Upstate New York suburbs. Because it was a high-tier contract, she had to deliver it personally.

An hour later, Clara pulled her battered, faded blue Subaru Outback up to a grand colonial-style manor. The pristine white columns and manicured lawns of Westchester County looked like a postcard of a world she once belonged to. From inside the house, the faint sound of a woman’s melodic laughter drifted out.

She rang the bell. A warm, baritone voice echoed from the foyer. "Hang on a second, babe. It’s probably the private catering."

The massive mahogany door swung open. "Hello, I have your order from Dawn Kitchen—" Clara began, holding up the thermal bags. But as she looked up, her words died in her throat.

The man standing before her gasped. "Clara?"

Clara’s heart did a violent flip. She immediately lowered her head, hiding her face beneath the rim of her baseball cap. "Your order, sir," she mumbled, her voice muffled and strained.

But Robert Sterling was not about to let her slide away. As he reached for the thermal bags, his fingers clamped tightly around her wrist. "Clara... it is you, isn't it?"

Clara had imagined many scenarios for a reunion with her past, but never this. She didn't know whether to curse her catering business for becoming too popular or to curse Robert for existing. Her mind spun, a chaotic storm of memories that threatened to give her a migraine.

Forcing her breath to steady, she plastered a wide, clumsy, star-struck grin on her face. She looked up, making her eyes as vacant and dazzled as possible.

"Oh my god! Are you... are you the Robert Sterling? The actor from the movies?" she squeaked, her voice octave-shifting into a flawless imitation of a star-struck fan. "Can I get an autograph? Please? I'm such a huge fan!"

Robert blinked, startled. He looked down at the woman before him. She was wearing a baggy, oversized sweatshirt and faded jeans. Her face was completely bare, her figure noticeably heavier and rounder than the ethereal, fragile starlet he had once held.

Four years had passed. The Clara Rivers he remembered lived on a pedestal of stardust—all white silk dresses, luminous eyes, and a voice like velvet. She had been the nation's darling. This woman looked like a tired, ordinary delivery girl.

Embarrassed, Robert slowly released her wrist. "I... I apologize. I mistook you for someone else."

Clara kept her breathless, foolish smile intact. "But the autograph?"

Robert took the delivery receipt from her trembling hands and scrawled his name with a gold pen. Clara let out a silent breath of relief as she watched the elegant script. She had survived. She had kept a shred of her dignity.

But fate, it seemed, was a cruel writer.

A shadow fell over the foyer. A woman draped in a sheer black silk robe stepped out. Vivian Drake’s cold, striking eyes scanned Clara, and the faint amusement on her face instantly sharpened into pure malice.

"Clara Rivers," Vivian purred, her voice dripping with venom. "I cannot believe you’re still hiding in New York. And running a delivery service? How... quaint. Oh, I remember now. Samuel Vance recommended this catering service to us. Of course he did. He’s always been your little savior, hasn't he? Robert, darling, did you just run into your long-lost pure muse?"

The words cut like glass, making Clara’s ears burn.

Clara let her foolish smile fade. She stood up straight, her posture shifting into an effortless, innate grace that her baggy clothes couldn't hide. She tilted her head slightly, a small, weary smile playing on her lips.

"Miss Drake," Clara said, her voice dropping into a calm, resonant register. "You are already standing at the absolute peak of your career. Why waste your energy making life difficult for a simple delivery woman? It’s been four years. I’ve moved on, but you seem trapped in the past. Tell me... just how massive is your inferiority complex?"

Without waiting for an answer, Clara snatched the signed receipt from Robert’s hand, turned on her heel, and walked away.

Behind her, Vivian’s face flushed a furious, ugly red.

"How dare she!" Vivian hissed. She turned on Robert, her long red nails digging into his chest. "Are you still looking at her? Still yearning for your pure little angel?"

"Vivian, enough," Robert muttered, his face tight as he stared at the retreating, slightly heavier figure of Clara. "It's been years. Let it go."

"Let it go?" Vivian laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. "You want me to let it go because you’re still in love with her! Maybe I should play you her old scenes with Julian Cross. Perhaps then you'll remember exactly what kind of 'angel' she really was."

Clara sat in her Subaru, her hands shaking on the steering wheel as she navigated the winding, tree-lined driveway of the estate. The wind had picked up, rustling the thick canopy of leaves overhead.

She was angry. Angry at Vivian’s fake, plastic smile, angry at Robert’s cowardice, and angry at herself for letting them rattle her.

Screeech—bang!

A terrible metallic groan shattered her thoughts. Clara’s head jerked up. She had been so distracted that she had drifted over the dividing line of the private road. Standing right in front of her bumper was a sleek, midnight-black Maybach.

The deep, jagged scratch on the Maybach's pristine side panel told her everything she needed to know. It was a ruinous, astronomical expense.

Clara leaned her forehead against the steering wheel, a single, hot tear escaping her eye. Of course. When it rains, it pours. First, she runs into her ghosts; next, she destroys a car worth more than her life.

Someone tapped gently on her window. A deep, smooth voice drifted in from the cool air outside.

"Miss? I think we need to talk."

Clara bit her lip, opened the door, and stepped out onto the asphalt. Keeping her head down, she whispered, "I am so, so sorry. I wasn't paying attention."

"Apologies don't fix a Maybach, I'm afraid."

"I know," Clara sighed, her voice trembling. "I don't live here. I was just delivering food. I... I will take full responsibility. I'll wait for your insurance."

She was terrified. After paying off her old agency's ruinous breach-of-contract fees, she had nothing left. She couldn't even afford to replace her Subaru, let alone pay for a Maybach's custom paint job.

The silence dragged on. The man didn't reply.

Confused, Clara looked up. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the trees, illuminating the man's sharp, strikingly handsome profile.

Julian Cross stood frozen, his eyes locked onto her face.

Clara’s breath hitched. Panic, cold and sharp, seized her chest. She spun around, determined to bolt back into her car and flee.

But a strong, warm hand clamped firmly around her wrist, halting her in her tracks.

Julian, New York's untouchable, cold-faced king of the screen, pulled her back toward him. His grip was unyielding, his voice thick with a raw, long-buried emotion that trembled at the edges.

"Hey there, stranger," Julian whispered, his dark eyes burning into hers. "Long time, no see."

Chapter 2

Clara felt a sudden, suffocating rush of heat flush her cheeks . Standing before this ghost from her past, she felt as though she had been struck by a blunt, merciless arrow . She bit her lip and muttered, "Julian... we just ran into each other after all these years. Couldn't you use a slightly softer word than that?"

"Softer?" Julian’s lips curled into a faint, enigmatic smile—a look far less detached than his polished on-screen persona. The warmth in his eyes reached all the way to the depths of his gaze . "How about we discuss the damages to my car instead?"

Clara had no choice but to pull out her phone and call her mother, Eleanor . She kept her voice light, explaining that there had been a minor delivery hiccup and she would be delayed getting home.

As she hung up, she weighed the trouble she was in . Knowing Julian, he probably wouldn't make things too difficult for her. But the real question was... after all these years, did she even have the courage to lo
