Chapter 1

I need you to scream out loud little Sage…. You’re mine.

Sage couldn’t understand why her brother couldn’t wait to just leave home for university. But it was university - it comes with freedom of course, not that their parents were strict or anything.

Well, her brother a year later applied to another university in another country and in that year, he came home twice a year, just a few days then he would start complaining about going back to his freedom.

“Mom, why does brother don’t want to come back home?” She asked softly to her mother who was caressing Sage’s long hair on her mother’s lap whilst seated on the couch in the living room.

Her mother paused crooning, “Baby, once you go to university and have your freedom, maybe you would understand also.” She continued her crooning.

Sage fixed her head better on the comfortable laps.

Still, she was not understanding a thing. She couldn’t understand why Jaxon chose to be far away from her knowing that they grew together, so tight like they were twin even though they were 3 years apart. Her brows furrowed when her mind reminded her, he’s been ignoring your chats and calls. True. At first, Sage thought and understood alone that tertiary was no high school, maybe Jaxon had so many assignments to deal with and he would come back to her after some hours. But it has been a month of waiting.

She had confided her feelings to Emily her best friend. Emily had a thing for Jaxon and no matter how hard she tried to hide it, it was just so d*mn hard and she saw that Jaxon had noticed that and gave her weird vibes.

*******

Sage prepared herself for school, she was in her last senior year, ready to graduate and enroll in her brother’s tertiary. She was missing him terribly, it'd been two years since she last saw him and it had been months since they communicated in any how. Jaxon was busy, too busy for his family. And Sage had hated how his mother and father had been so calm and understanding about it.

It was exasperating her.

She brushed her long – straight brown hair into a high ponytail and left two curly strands side by side to fall to her face. Applied a pink lip gloss on her plump pink lips, with no make-up on her face.

Her uniform was laid well on the bed, just a short-sleeved white shirt with a dusty gray short skirt and a tie. Neat. She flickered her long – natural lashes before her mirror and strode out after. She walked slowly knowing Emily would be trotting behind her and she did.

“You’re always late,” Sage rolled her eyes after she sarcastically uttered her words. “Remember, moon Goddess, grant early their mates who are always early.”

“There’s no such….” Emily let her skin be kissed by the sun, and it gave another hue to her skin. Gold. Her skin was like a Goddess, so light brown, thick, and immersed with a short curly hair-cut and V-jawline frame.

Sage stared at Emily with puppy steel-green eyes and chuckled, “I can’t wait to turn 18 and follow my brother.”

“No one exists in your world other than your brother,” Emily was right. Sage all she could do was to blab about her brother all the time.

“You too,” she said taking in her green grape.

“Just because I walk you to school.”

“Oh my, I didn’t know that’s how you feel….. I’m sorry princess,” she chuckled and nearly choked on her grape.

“Serves you right trying to be a comedian.” Emily breathed the words in a bored tone. “Maybe your brother had found a mate, that’s something you should think of. You know how mating things work.”

Something indolent hit the gut in Sage, and she remained silent for a moment, “I don’t know. I don’t have a mate yet.”

Was Sage jealous that her favorite brother had found someone special other than her? Cause that could only be a logical reason why Jaxon was no longer coming back home. She hurried to school, ignoring the fact that she was walking with Emily.

After they arrived at school, Sage couldn’t contain her huffing and sighing, and no matter how much Emily tried to tell her that she was obvious to all in their class, Sage didn’t care and after all, she was the Mafia’s princess, no one would dare to speak to her in ill manners even though she had never used her power.

Mr. and Mrs. Rover, their the foreigners to the city. After Mr. Rover lost his job in his primal city he began to search for something he could do to earn fortune and that’s when he was introduced to the dark world by a feared most man named uncle Thump, and the only way not to be caught is to own a nightclub for money laundry.

“Stop it already,” Emily was starting to get annoyed.

“I can’t wait to turn 18,” Sage murmured the words which were ringing in her mind since last night.

“Me too,” of course she was audible enough for her best friend who was sharing a desk with to hear.

They both sighed.

The teachers strode in and out. Had their lunch at the secret school rooftop. Sage and Emily were eating alone, not in the cafeteria like the rest. Emily’s family was doing well, her father was a doctor and her mother owned a clothing shop and it was doing best too. And their school was near their homes, so no cars were needed to drop them at the school premises.

“Okay, tell me….” Emily turned her face, flashing dimples under the corner of her s*xy lips. Sage gave her focus. “What do you think your mate looks like?”

“You know, Tall, broad a bit of hunk with abs of steel, shiny eyes, and a bright smile maybe with dimples.” Sage had a dreamy smile on her face after her words.

“Wow, mine would be tall, buff, with a beard and tattoos,” Emily rested her chin in her palm with dreamy eyes.

“Too dangerous my friend.”

“Mmmh, I love it dangerous and hard.”

“You sly,” Sage said with small laughter. Dang. Their lunch was over.

Being under 18 it was hard. For the first time, Sage found her father back from work when she came back home from school. And surprisingly her mother stopped a few months ago for going to work. Her work was her bakery shop and she had to find someone in a quick to manage the shop.

Sage just strode inside the mansion and then halted when she heard whispers in the kitchen. Not audible enough to hear information but she could hear that it was her mother and father. Heard a sniffle from her mother.

She dropped her backpack to the floor and jogged to the kitchen room.

“Mom, are you okay?” her words came out with some panting in between.

Staring at her pale mother. She was pure white naturally with long and full-volume blonde hair, while her dad was a dark, tall, and broad man. Her mom was weak. Sage narrowed her eyes into, crying.

“No baby….” Her father wrapped his arms around her head and then wiped off the tears from her face. “Don’t worry princess, everything will be alright.”

Sage could see that her mother was weak and pale, but all in her mind was thinking maybe something had happened to her brother Jaxon. D*mn, soon it was going to be her birthday and she wanted to celebrate it while Jaxon was there too.

She cussed something under her breath to the moon Goddess and let her tears cascade down, and muffled, “What happened to Jaxon?”

Her father just forgot that they had never mentioned about her mother’s illness. Her mother and father had met way before them and got married. A year later, her mother had found that something in her stomach there was growing and always giving her stomach ache. The pains were dire to make her cry in the night sometimes. That’s why Sage once asked her father why their room was different from her’s and Jaxon’s because of the soundproofing while she was in her junior school, and they answered simply, “It's just for decoration baby.” She believed.

Her mother thought she was cancer-free, after a year of fighting it and it had to come back again after so many years. But she thanked herself for raising the two lovely kids and soon Sage would be entering her university.

And it was time for them to explain to their lovely princess who had been crying with wrong information. The wrong information she had planted in her head by herself.

“Baby,” her father pulled away from the hug. She met the eyes before hers through the tears.

Mr. Rover had the eyes of a sly fox, his face was not genuine, not pure white like her mother's but it was white with freckles crossing his nose bridge.

“Mmmh,” she listened attentively.

“Don’t be scared with whatever we are going to say, right?” her dad stated.

And she was becoming too impatient being treated like a toddler. And she nearly gritted, ‘say it already’ she gave them a nod.

“Your mother’s cancer came back.”

So confused. Sage had read somewhere that were wolves DNAs can reject cancers in their bodies. So why her mom? But at the moment, she was worried about how her brother was going to take the news.

She hugged her weak mom who had her stomach arched and slightly wincing then ran off to her bedroom to try to contact her brother after she placed a kiss on her mother’s cheek with a soft comforting voice, “You’ll be okay.”

After the wrenching news yesterday. Sage woke up with a pile of head throbbing. Aching so dire. She had been crying so hard while her father came to visit from time to time in her bedroom trying to comfort her, until he couldn’t when her mother had a seizure and she was ran to the hospital.

She was left all alone and tried to contact her brother but there was no reach. She couldn’t u
