“I propose to you instead!” I declared The whole room was silent. If a pin dropped you probably would hear it. Every single person was stunned, looking at me like I had just grown a second pair of legs. I mean… I would too. Considering what I just did. I mentally facepalmed myself and was about to call my freaking bluff when to my utter horror, the stranger, whom I had just literally attacked with a pawn shop ring, tilted his head, he examined the ring with a smirk. “I do,” he replied, his voice was like a shot of whiskey. Smooth and hot. Caleb's voice sliced through the tense air. “Boss?” My stomach dropped. I blinked rapidly. Slowly turning my head. My ex was staring at the man I had just ‘engaged’ myself to. His expression shifted from confusion to outright panic. Did I just propose to my cheating boyfriend's boss? What's worse… He just said I do.

WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST DO?

I drummed my fingers on the table where the radio sat. Listening to the radio announcer’s voice crackle through the static.

Morning folks!. It is the season of love and today we'll be calling out our lucky winner for the one week long, all expense paid trip to the Maldives.

Drumrolls please …

My breath was caught in my throat as I clutched my ticket tightly, crumpling the paper.

Ticket 401! Congratulations!

I gasped. Oh my god. My pulse quickened.

I pushed myself off the table with a squeal and my cat, Fluffy, meowed in disapproval, glaring at me from his perch on the couch. I ignored him. Jumping up and down in my small living room.

“Yes! I won Fluffy” I shrieked, grabbing him from the floor and twirling. I could feel my face burn from how hard I was smiling.

I had bought a ticket a week ago when I heard the man in the radio say they were giving out a cruise trip, all expenses paid to a lucky couple for Valentine's day. I could contain my excitement as I hurriedly reached for my phone.

I dialed my Chelsea's number. She was my best friend since middle school. She could be a handful but I wouldn't replace her for the world. She picked up on the second ring.

“I won!” I literally screamed into my phone making her wince on the other end.

She sighed after a while “And what pray tell are you talking about?” Her tone was bored but I ignored her unenthusiasm.

“The draw? I told you about it days ago” she hummed in response. I sighed dramatically plopping down on the couch. “I'm going to the Maldives with Caleb for Valentine's day. Please don't tell him yet. I want it to be a surprise” I blurted out because Chelsea could be a loud mouth sometimes. Especially if it concerned her brother.

She groaned. “Okay. I won't . I swear” I could literally hear her roll her eyes over the phone. I didn't trust her with this secret so I needed to tell Caleb as soon as possible. “Did you hear?”

I furrowed my brows. “Hear what?”

“The CEO of King's Inc. is having a party this weekend. And my parents said I could come. You're coming too”

“Uh.. yeah sure. The trip is next week do I can make it work. And Chelsea…” I said, “Stop obsessing over that d*mn CEO. You've been at it for months now. Don't you think it's time to give up?”

She let out a crazed laughter then stopped abruptly. “Never! See you on Friday” She screamed before ending the call.

I shook my head at my bestfriend’s antics and checked the time. 10:30.

I still some had time. I'd make something extra special and go to his work place during lunch hours.

He always told me not to go to his work place but I knew he would make an exception for this.

I clasped my hands in excitement and walked to the kitchen. I worked expertly, chopping the onions and whisking eggs. I had a really short experience as a chef for six months.

Well… I cooked at a local diner but still. The excitement was bubbling inside of me, threatening to spillover as I worked.

With a neatly packed lunch in one hand and a small velvet box tucked safely in my coat pocket.

Caleb was the love of my life. We'd been together years. We were highschool sweethearts and after that we went to college together.

He got a job as a finance consultant at the largest firm in New York. He tried to downplay his efforts, saying his parents were the ones who really got the job for him since they were in good terms with the CEO, but I believed in him.

He was smart, and funny and kind. The kind of man I would spend the rest of my life with. We hadn't had s*x yet, he had convinced me that we should wait till we got married and I had no objections.

I, on the other hand was the opposite. I studied literature in college and after graduation I worked at a dainty bookshop.

The cool winter breeze hit me as I stepped outside. Hailed a cab and got in. My legs bobbed in anticipation as I grazed my fingers on the velvet jewelry box.

I was going to propose to him.

We'd waited long enough. We were in a good place right now. He had a stable job, I got an offer to work in Manhattan at a really huge library but I wasn't going to take it. We would stay right here and have a family together.

The trip to Maldives was the icing on he cake. A romantic getaway on a romantic holiday. What better way to do it?

I inhaled as I stood Infront of the tall building that loomed over me. King's Incorporated was the hottest spot for finance. With top notch system and A level services.

I entered the skyscraper and was greeted with the site of business people. Hustling and bustling.

I tucked the box into my coat and tightened my grip on the flask. As I approached the receptionist, she gave me a warm smile.

“Good afternoon ma'am. How can I be of service to you”

“Uh I'm here to see Caleb. Caleb Smith.” I gave her a tight smile as she clacked on her keyboard.

She reached for her telephone and I stopped her. “Wait!” She froze, giving me a questioning look.

“Uh… could you do me a favor and not let him know I'm here?” I brought the flask a little higher. “I want to surprise him”

She hesitated at first but nodded. I thanked her and headed to the fifth floor. My excitement was slowly being replaced with nerves the closer I got to his office but I pushed the feeling back.

I took a deep breath, pulling out the ring from my coat and walked into his office. I guess he didn't notice me enter because he was too busy making out with another lady. The lady he told me time without number was just his assistant.

My breath hitched. I was frozen in place. My mind swirling. At first I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My heart stopped but then it started again, but this time it was pounding with pure rage.

How dare he? After everything? All the years we spent together.

Before I could think, I stormed further into the office, engagement ring in hand. “You… you cheating lying b*st*rd!” I hissed. I could feel the heat of anger surge through me.

My boyfriend… now ex-boyfriend, clearly, he stumbled back with guilt in his eyes. “What are you-... Roseline…” he started. “It's not what you it looks like-”

“Oh please Caleb,” I snapped. “You were literally eating her face before I walked in!”

The blonde assistant squeaked and scurried away, leaving me with the man I had once imagined my future with.

I was flooded with a train of emotions, anger, heartbreak, the fact that all of this was just absurd. Too much to believe even as it was staring right at me.

Then I did something dumb. I wasn't thinking straight. In a fit of blind fury, I turned on my heel, marched straight out of the office. Caleb was calling for me as he tried to straighten himself out but I didn't listen.

I grabbed the first man I saw. A stranger.

If he could replace me so easily, why couldn't I do the same?”

A tall , sharply dressed stranger with an air of authority that made people step aside as he walked by.

And without thinking, without looking, I forced the engagement ring into his finger.

“I propose to you instead!” I declared

Oh. Oh no. No, no, no.

Did I just propose to my cheating boyfriend's boss? What's worse…

He just said I do.

THE FIRECRACKER

RICHARD'S POV

My mornings were always the same. Wake up by six, run around the block for an hour, shower, go through stocks before heading to the office. After work, I came back straight home, worked late then slept.

It went on like a movie on repeat.

But today? Today was so much different than I imagined.

I wasn’t made for this... offices, board meetings, financial reports. I preferred breaking bones over balancing books. But life wasn’t about what you wanted; it was about what you were given. And I had built this company from the ground up, every brick laid with my blood, sweat, and sheer determination.

My wolf was restless as we exited the conference room. Writhing inside of me. Lucian was always quiet, tamed. I made sure of it. I didn't want my difference stop me from being successful although my father, the Alpha of our pack was under the impression that there was more to life than wealth and power but I had no time for idealism.
