She had hidden herself for many years, and now her beauty and talent shock people. However, she had never expected that the temporary groom she picked would be a big problem. Since then, Kallie was 'tortured' on bed every night. When she finally couldn't bear it anymore, she scolded him, "Phoenix, you son of a b*tch. This is just a fake marriage!" Phoenix replied innocently, "Yes, I have been maintaining this marriage so hard...by my body hha!"
Chapter 1 Substitute Groom
New York, early summer.
At the grand ballroom of Obsidian Gem Hotel.
Thousands of guests had just witnessed a debacle. The union between the Stevens and Hoffman families had originally been regarded as a wedding of the century, yet the groom, Porter Stevens hadn't even shown up.
Moreover, the bride's entrance had been interrupted by a video of Porter spending the night before the wedding in a C-list starlet's apartment. It was accompanied by footage of them being intimate the very next morning.
This sent a shockwave through the crowd. The Stevens family was completely humiliated. How were they going to salvage the situation?
The bride, on the other hand, became the laughingstock of the city.
At the VIP table, Mrs. Hoffman looked dismayed. She asked her husband, "Honey, what should we do?"
Deegan Hoffman remained silent, his expression dark. To tell the truth, he'd never experienced something like this before. How could someone treat a wedding so frivolously?
The Hoffman and Stevens families were two of the most renowned families in New York, and neither of them could easily bear the consequences of such a prank. He couldn't understand why Porter had just fled like that.
The bride had been away from home for more than a decade and the Hoffman family had specially brought her back for this wedding. Who would've expected something so humiliating to happen?
At this time, the head of the Stevens family hurried over and patted Deegan on the shoulder.
"Deegan, this is all our fault. Maybe we should postpone the wedding for now... Once I get my hands on that brat, I'll be sure to make it up to you."
Deegan was about to answer him when the bride spoke up.
In that instant, silence fell over the thousands of guests present.
Everyone was looking forward to seeing how the awkward bride would salvage the situation.
Kallie Hoffman held a microphone as she swept a calm gaze over the crowd.
Then, her eyes settled on a man seated at the VIP table. He had been focused on his mobile phone this whole time.
Yes, he would be the one.
Her soft voice rang out through the microphone. "Excuse me, the man in the black suit that's wholly focused on his phone? The one seated at the fourth table from the front? Sorry to bother you."
Phoenix Cole's eye subconsciously twitched. Wholly focused on his phone? Was she referring to him?
He raised his head and looked up at the bride, a little surprised.
Through the veil, no one could see how Kallie actually looked. The Hoffman family had five daughters, and he'd seen the four elder ones. This was the youngest daughter, and he'd heard that she had lived with her grandmother in a remote place since she was young. She had only been brought back home three days ago.
However, rumour had it that she was ugly and had a stutter. Yet this didn't seem to be the case, judging from the way she'd spoken earlier.
When Kallie saw the man look up, she continued, "Something unexpected happened today, but I don't want to ruin the wedding for everyone present, so I have a little request. If you dare to, would you come on stage to take the place of my absent groom?"
The crowd was immediately abuzz at her words.
Was she actually getting herself a substitute groom? There were substitute actors and players, but a substitute groom?
Both the Stevens and Hoffman families were shocked. Who would've expected Kallie to act so outrageously?
Phoenix was taken aback as well. Him, a substitute groom? She'd even asked him whether he dared to? Was she trying to provoke him?
In his mind, he found this whole thing ludicrous. Yet he found himself getting up and walking towards the stage.
In fact, Phoenix was curious to see what Kallie would do next. After all, it was hard to come across someone acting so out of line, especially if that someone was a young lady from an affluent family.
It had been a while since something had last piqued his interest.
This was so out of character for him that his mother anxiously said, "Phoenix, get back here!"
Chapter 2 You're the One
Mrs. Cole's words did nothing to stop Phoenix from heading towards the stage.
Kallie had truly piqued his curiosity.
Rumour had it that the Hoffman family's youngest daughter had followed her grandmother to Meliboro Bluff since she was a child.
And she was ugly and had a stutter.
However, she'd spoken extremely smoothly earlier on. Were the rumours wrong?
Phoenix sauntered on stage with a mixture of curiosity and interest.
None of the guests had expected this to happen. They sat and watched the scene unfold with their mouths agape.
Kallie, on the other hand, said to the pastor, "We can continue with the wedding now."
Up close, Phoenix found her voice to be rather melodious. This didn't seem to belong to a woman with a stutter.
"Um..." The pastor was here at the behest of the Stevens family. He wasn't sure what to do at the moment.
"You heard the lady. Let's move things along, shall we?" Phoenix smiled at the pastor.
