Lily was at a loss for what to do when she discovered that her husband, Duke Evans, had been unfaithful to her, especially now that she was pregnant. She considered keeping the pregnancy a secret, but Duke quickly found out about it and insisted that she have an abortion. What Lily didn’t expect, however, was that the doctor who would attend to her pregnancy was none other than her ex-boyfriend.
Chapter 1
What would you do if, while going for a prenatal check-up, you ran into your ex-boyfriend—the same one you once slapped?
In the hospital corridor, a nurse’s voice echoed, “Number 076, Lily Lewis!”
Lily quickly got up and entered the doctor’s office. The doctor wore a mask, but his high nose bridge and deep-set eyes made him look young. As soon as she sat down, she heard the doctor’s low voice.
“Lily, here for a check-up?”
That voice… Lily would recognize it even after a thousand years! She abruptly looked up as the doctor casually removed his mask. That face—could it be anyone else but Daniel Martin?
Lily froze, instinctively wanting to grab the medical report on the table and leave. In the next moment, a warm hand rested on hers. Daniel held her hand, a slight smile on his lips.
“What’s the matter? Where’s that courage you had when you slapped me in front of everyone at the school auditorium, calling me a cheater?”
Lily stayed still, head hanging in silence like a timid quail. Under her tense gaze, Daniel leisurely flipped through her report.
“Let’s start with a 4D ultrasound.”
Lily felt a jolt of alarm and blurted out, “Isn’t that to check for deformities? What’s your point?”
Daniel closed the report with a faint smile. “Not bad for a finance major. You sure know a lot.”
Lily was speechless. Back when Daniel was studying for his exams, she’d spent every night helping him memorize this dry information. She hadn’t expected that this knowledge would be useful to her now, pregnant. Suppressing her chaotic emotions, Lily took her report and walked out. Only when she disappeared through the doorway did Daniel look away.
On her way up to the ultrasound room on the fourth floor, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced at the caller ID and answered without expression.
“What is it?”
Duke Evans, her husband, spoke coldly, “My colleague said they saw you at the hospital. Finally decided to get rid of the kid?”
Lily pressed her lips together but couldn’t hold back her anger.
“Keep dreaming! This is my body, and he’s my child. I’m the only one who gets to decide what happens to him. You don’t get a say!”
Duke paused, then replied even colder, “Lily, think carefully. I won’t acknowledge this child.” He hung up abruptly.
Listening to the dead tone on the line, Lily instinctively clutched the railing, feeling a bit weak. She touched her barely showing belly, her eyes stinging with tears. Just a year ago, she’d succumbed to Duke’s passionate pursuit and married him, thinking they’d have a peaceful life together. Little did she know he had a “soulmate” abroad who’d returned a month ago, making Lily nothing but an obstacle to their happiness.
Since then, Duke had been determined for her to terminate the pregnancy and file for divorce.
Taking a deep breath, Lily forced back her tears, trying to shake off the thoughts. After the ultrasound, she returned to the office and handed the scan to Daniel.
Daniel examined it.
“The baby’s fine, but you need to improve your nutrition.”
Lily felt a wave of embarrassment.
Daniel didn’t comment further. Instead, he removed his white coat, grabbed his jacket, and said, “Just finishing my shift; I’ll give you a ride home.”
Lily forced a smile. “Dr. Martin, you’re really dedicated to your patients.”
Without a word, Daniel headed out. Lily followed him, looking at his upright figure, feeling a pang in her heart.
In high school, she’d chased after Daniel for three years before he finally responded, making her his girlfriend. But just three days into their relationship, she’d received a video of him with another girl.
Outraged, she’d confronted him as he was giving a speech to the entire school. Standing in the audience, watching Daniel proudly bear the “top student” title, her tears had dried by the time he finished.
Waiting by the exit, she slapped him in front of everyone. “You cheater, it’s over!”
From that moment, they’d had no contact—until now, under such awkward circumstances.
Lost in memories, Lily snapped back to reality, looking out the car window with a shiver. They were at the same spot where she and Daniel had their first date. Daniel got out, flashing her a casual smile.
“Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m just here to pick up my fiancée.”
Lily’s face remained unchanged. She held up her phone.
“What a coincidence—my husband’s just around the corner. Said he’ll pick me up soon.”
As soon as Lily finished speaking, she saw a woman approaching. The woman gave her a once-over, then possessively linked arms with Daniel. Sensing the hostility, Lily explained calmly, “I’m Dr. Martin’s patient. Since I’m pregnant, it’s inconvenient for me to get around, so he offered to give me a ride.”
The clarification eased the woman’s expression.
Lily nodded politely. “I’ll leave you two to your time together,” she said, then walked away.
Amora Carter settled into Daniel’s car and spoke with a soft tone.
“So, this is the ‘white moonlight’ you can’t forget? She doesn’t seem interested in being involved with you.”
Daniel’s face remained impassive.
Amora smirked. “Fine, I won’t say more. Just don’t cause any mess before our wedding.”
Daniel pressed his lips together, his gaze flicking to the rearview mirror, where he saw a tall man talking to Lily.
He hit the gas, and the car sped off.
Lily discreetly looked away and then lifted her head to face Richard Evans, offering a faint smile.
“Thanks for this.”
“No problem; my teammates and I were just eating nearby.” Richard walked her to the car, opened the door, and casually asked, “Is my brother still insisting on a divorce?”
Lily lowered her gaze. “This is adult business. You don’t need to worry about it.”
Richard started the car, his gaze lingering on her.
“I’m 19 now, Lily. Can’t I at least ask?”
She pressed her lips together, saying nothing. But Richard leaned closer, relentless.
“Sis-in-law, you weren’t like this when you sat on my lap coaxing me to drink.”
Her face flushed and then turned pale. She couldn’t hold back.
“Richard, if you’re not ready to handle this, then go tell your brother the truth. Stop bringing it up with me!”
Seeing her anger, Richard quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, okay? Lily, don’t be mad.” His antics exasperated her.
“Stop the car. I don’t need a ride.”
With a screech, the car halted by the roadside. She got out and shut the door firmly before walking off.
Back at her place, Lily opened the door with her key. It was Chloe’s house. The aroma of food filled the air as Chloe peeked out from the kitchen.
“You’re back? How was the check-up? I made your favorite roast turkey.”
Something inside her softened. Lily walked over and hugged Chloe, speaking in a muffled voice.
“I ran into Daniel. He’s working as a doctor downtown now.”
Chloe was shocked. “Isn’t the world small? A reunion after so long? Did he ever explain what happened back then?”
Lily let go, lowering her head. “I don’t need an explanation. Seven years have passed. I’ve long forgotten.”
Chloe turned down the stove, then pulled Lily to sit on the sofa. With a mocking smile, she said, “Forgotten? If you really had, you wouldn’t have gone back to beg your mom when his family was in trouble!”
Lily mumbled, “It was just helping a classmate.”
Chloe poked her forehead. “Stubborn as always!”
Feeling exhausted, Lily leaned back. “Forget it. No more talking about him. He has a fiancée now, and I’m married. It’s time to move on.”
Just as she finished speaking, her phone buzzed in her pocket—it was a friend request on Instagram from Daniel. Lily stared at it for a while before finally accepting. But Daniel didn’t message her right away.
That night, unable to sleep, Lily tossed and turned. When she was finally drifting off, Daniel’s message popped up.
“Lily, let’s find a time to talk.”
Lily’s heart skipped a beat. Her fingers moved, and she blocked him right away.
The next day, she headed to the hospital. Near the entrance, a white Maserati pulled up beside her. Duke’s voice was cold as he spoke, “Get in. We need to talk.”
Noticing the curious stares of passersby, Lily sighed and got in. As soon as she sat down, Duke said, “If you keep this baby, you’re the only one who’ll suffer.”
Lily glared at him, anger churning in her chest. How could she have believed his sweet words and married someone like him?
Suppressing her emotions, she replied, “If you can’t talk like a human, go reincarnate. Maybe you’ll come back as a dog with a better sense of words.”
Duke’s face darkened, and he took out a check. “Half a million. Sign the divorce papers.”
She didn’t take it, a sarcastic smile on her lips. “Divorce for half a million? Are you out of your mind? If you want freedom, then transfer all your assets to me.”
Duke hesitated for a moment, as if suppressing his rage. He fixed his gaze on her.
“This is all you’re worth to me.”
Pain shot through her heart, but she lifted her head defiantly.
“As far as I’m concerned, you’re worth nothing.”
Duke’s expression grew colder. “How much will it take for you to agree to the divorce?”
His restrained look made Lily laugh.
“You told me you were changing your flight, but instead, a hotel booking message popped up on my phone. When I walked in on you and Ruby, you hadn’t even separated yet. How much are those photos worth?”
Her chest heaving, she grabbed her bag and flung it at him before opening the door and getting out.
“Duke, you want a fresh start but won’t pay the price? The farther you stay from me, the better!”
Feeling a surge of satisfaction, Lily walked away. But as she rounded a corner, she saw a Porsche 718 parked nearby.
Ruby was in the driver’s seat, a cigarette between her fingers. When she saw Lily, she stepped out with a sultry grace.
“Lily, keeping this baby is unwise.”
Lily’s stomach churned. No wonder Duke had loved this woman for years—they were a perfect match in low character, even starting conversations the same way.
Ruby flicked her cigarette away. “I’d advise you to terminate the pregnancy soon. I know the toll it takes on a woman. Here’s three thousand as compensation. Is that enough?”
Seeing her haughty demeanor, Lily looked at her as if she were a fool.
“You seem to love the number ‘three.’ You live up to being the third party.”
Ruby smiled smugly. “The person not loved is the third wheel. If you don’t want money, fine—just end up with nothing.”
Lily smiled back. “And let me remind you, Duke’s been around. You might want to get yourself checked.”
Ruby’s face turned pale, glaring at Lily before finally driving away. As soon as she was gone, Lily took a deep breath.
When she turned around, Daniel was standing nearby, watching her.
Lily’s heart skipped a beat as she faced his calm gaze. “Dr. Martin, are you on duty?”
Without answering, he walked ahead.
Lily pursed her lips and quietly followed him toward the examination room. Inside, Daniel was already dressed in his white coat and blue mask. Lily lay on the bed, watching him approach, her palms growing slightly sweaty.
Staring at the ceiling, she heard his question, his voice low but clear.
“Your husband cheated?”
Lily froze. After a moment, she chuckled bitterly. “Yeah. I date a cheater, and even my husband isn’t much better. My judgment really sucks.”
Daniel replied coldly, “The whole world knows about your bad taste.”
“Yeah, and the whole world knows one of them is you,” Lily's blunt response to Daniel.
He didn't answer her anymore because the man was busy applying gel to her stomach and started the ultrasound.
“So, what’s your plan? You’re going to be a single mom now,” he said. His eyes were focused on the screen. Lily couldn't see his full expression because of the mask.
Chapter 2
"And what business is it of yours with my life decisions? You’re just my doctor," she replied, avoiding Daniel's gaze. She clasped her hands as she stared at the monitor.
Lily's heart raced when she saw a small shadow on the screen. That’s her baby there…
She smiled bitterly as she held back her emotions. Next, she heard what seemed like a heartbeat. It was fast and strong.
“That’s your baby’s heartbeat,” Daniel muttered.
Her tears slowly ran down, so she quickly wiped them away. Lily only then realized the situation she was in and what she would face once she gave Duke what he wanted—divorce.
She wouldn’t want to worry about that. She’s capable of everything. She can raise and support her child alone, but what she can't accept is what her child will face when he comes out. Above all, she knows what it feels like to be without a father. She doesn't want her child to experience that, but what else can she do?
She is not the kind of woman who will b
