Chapter 1 The Proposal I
Andrea
"Phew!" I sighed in relief at the almost empty office. I felt like dancing in excitement at the thought of having fresh air to breathe, with Rosie not being around to strangle the life out of me. I just can't seem to place a finger on why every aspect of my life doesn't seem to go as planned. The fact that I have a lot going on in my house, coupled with having to face my annoying hell of a colleague and my arrogant boss, is causing me a mental breakdown.
With the little strength I had in me, I slumped into the chair and rested my head on the desk, attempting to clear my head. Slowly, I felt myself drifting into sleep and I didn’t fight it. I needed the rest.
Just when I thought I had escaped it all when sleep took over, another version of my life problems decided to surface in my dreams. My everyday banter with my sister.
"Can't you read the room!" Laurel screamed in frustration. "I do not need you here, Andrea." She sneered.
"I just came to help you with your preparation for prom." I whispered, walking towards her but she moved back as though I was a plague.
"Don't!" She gestured angrily, making me halt. "You have no right to choose for me or even help me in deciding what to do." My heart sank at her statement and my throat parched in an unknown thirst.
"I am your Sis-" Laurel waved her hands, cutting me off.
"Do not complete that statement, Andrea. You and I are not related and can never be." She snorted, staring me straight in the eyes.
"The only idea you'd give me is probably how to murder someone. I will never be like you." She banged the door angrily, leaving me all alone in her room. I didn't realize when the tears I've been holding back started flowing freely. I swear I was no murderer but Laurel thought otherwise.
“Andrea,”
“Andrea,”
No matter how deep I was in my sleep, I will recognize that voice, Mr. King's voice.
“Andrea,”
When the third call came, I hurriedly stood up. I looked everywhere except at the tall, handsome man who stood in front of me.
"Good morning, Mr. King." I greeted trying so hard to look as calm as ever.
"You don't expect to be paid after sleeping on duty right?" His deep voice boomed again and I could feel my body betraying me.
"Pardon?" The word slipped out before I could stop it.
His eyes pierced mine as he made steady but slow steps towards me. I cowered away in fear, my whole mind a jumble of thoughts while Mr. King kept moving towards me with a smirk plastered on his face.
He stopped in front of me, close enough that I could feel the heat of his body. My back hit the wall but not hard enough to hurt me. Mr. King had both arm locking me in place.
"Andrea," He called slowly but with authority. I caught a whiff of what he smelled like; honey and cinnamon and I couldn't help but want to brush my hands through his silky black hair while screaming his name.
"I want you in my office in five minutes." The sudden change from that slow voice to the command scared the hell out of me. If I get scolded again this time, I can proudly boast that will be my thousandth scolding in just three months. Before I could finish processing his words, he was already on his way out.
"Asshole!" I mumbled.
"I heard that."
I froze.
How did he hear that?
I rushed out of my office attempting to enter the elevator with Mr. King but that asshole was never going to change.
"Take the stairs and be there on time." He snickered.
I wonder how he freaking expected me to get to the fifth floor in five minutes with the stairs while I am only on the freaking first floor. After thinking for a moment, I began running up the stairs even though I knew I wouldn't make it in time but well, at least there is nothing wrong in making an effort.
I burst into the office with my mouth wide open trying to gasp for air. I could feel the strength in me draining as though I was about to the die and that wicked handsome man sat comfortably sipping a wine. He dropped the wine glass gently on the table and stared at his watch for a while.
"You are fifteen minutes late. Remember not to expect the same amount during payday." I gaped in surprise. How can someone be this wicked?
“Sit down. We need to talk.” He said it so casually not minding how tired and ghastly I looked. I was sure I was going to pass out soon. I didn't want to obey his command, not when he is supposed to apologize to me.“I want to believe you are not deaf, Andrea.” He said, snapping me out of my thoughts. I sighed in defeat and dragged my feet tiredly to where I was expected to sit and once I did, he went straight to the point. "Let’s not waste time. This is very urgent and needs to be addressed as such." He said, clutching his hands together and putting it on his desk. What was urgent and needed urgent treatment? I racked my brains trying to remember times I might have wronged him but nothing came to mind.
I gasped inwardly when a realization dawned on me. Was he about to dismiss me from this place? Gosh! I can't take that. Where will I find a good-paying job like this one? I clasped my hands together involuntarily, praying silently that it shouldn't be what I was thinking. "Andrea," I blinked, staring at Mr. King like a lost sheep. "Are you going to keep getting lost in thoughts?" He seethes in anger. I couldn't do anything than to make a slight bow which he understood. He sighed and leaned back in his chair, then went ahead to speak.“I have an offer for you-” He paused, his eyes locked into mine with an intensity I couldn't overlook.
An offer for me? Mr. King never makes an offer but rumours has it that when he does, it's like a deal with the devil.Andrea! You are losing your mind again. You'd better listen before he throws you out of this office angrily. "What offer, Mr. King?" I asked quietly, more like mumbled to myself but he heard it. “Marry me.” He finally dropped the bomb, causing my eyes to widen in surprise. I gazed straight into his eyes, trying to find out if he was joking but clearly he wasn't.
I blinked, “What?”
“A contract marriage. I will pay you for it.” Before I could hold back, I burst into a fit of laughter, forgetting where I sat at the moment. Who wouldn't burst into laughter at this offer? Like, who the hell makes a marriage offer in this era? "This is not a joke, Andrea!" He banged his fist on his desk. I jumped in shock, my laughter faltering. "You are not joking?" I still asked, even after seeing his face all red from anger and his nose flaring. "Does this look like a joke to you? I told you before that this matter needs to be attended to urgently, didn't I? I nodded once again, acknowledging the truth in his words. It was at this moment that his words settled deep within me, hitting me like a ton of bricks. Marry him?
Why the hell will I even do that?
What is he even talking about?

* Derrik King *
“I have an offer for you –” I paused as I intently gazed at her. Andrea looked at me expectantly, waiting to hear what I had to say. “Marry me and I will pay you. A contract marriage. ” The words left my mouth before I could reconsider. I noticed her eyes widened and her mouth dropped in surprise. I could tell the gears were turning in her head, trying to understand the situation. I'm hoping she accepts this, otherwise, I'm doomed.
*****************************
There was complete silence in the office and even the sound of a drop of pin would be heard. She still had her mouth open, not recovering from the shock yet.
“You wouldn't want to catch a fly, Miss Andrea. I know this is shocking but could you close your mouth please.” I said in an attempt to lighten the mood a little. Andrea snapped her mouth shut, straightening in the chair.
“ I–I think I didn’t get what you said. Could
