Chapter 1

Amara’s POV

“Your Majesty, are you sure the king will come home tonight?”

I looked up from the dining table and smiled at Martha, the elderly maid who had served me since I became queen.

“Of course, Martha. Today is our third wedding anniversary. Lucien wouldn’t forget something so important.”

Even as I said those words, my heart trembled with uncertainty.

My husband, Lycan King Lucien, had forgotten my birthday twice. He had never celebrated our mating anniversary, and I could count the number of times he had kissed me on one hand.

But today would be different.

At least, I desperately wanted to believe that.

I had spent the entire afternoon preparing his favorite dishes. Roasted lamb, creamy potatoes, and the expensive red wine he loved.

Fresh white roses decorated the dining table. Candles flickered beneath the golden chandelier.

I had even bought a beautiful red dress with the little money I received as my monthly allowance.

Perhaps tonight, Lucien would finally look at me as his wife.

Not as an unwanted responsibility.

Not as the useless queen everyone whispered about.

But as the woman who loved him more than anything.

“Your Majesty…” Martha hesitated. “Please don’t get your hopes too high.”

I forced another smile.

“He’ll come, Martha.”

She lowered her head and quietly left.

I glanced at the clock.

Eight o’clock.

Lucien was already two hours late.

I picked up my phone and sent another message.

Happy anniversary, my love. Dinner is ready. I’ll be waiting for you.

It was my fifth message that day.

He hadn’t replied to any of them.

I placed the phone down and swallowed the familiar ache in my throat.

Three years.

For three years, I had tried everything to become a wife Lucien could love.

I learned his favorite meals, attended royal functions, studied kingdom affairs, and endured endless insults from the noblewomen.

But nothing was ever enough.

Especially because I had failed to give him an heir.

“A queen who cannot produce a child is nothing but decoration.”

“She’s not even a proper wolf. Why did His Majesty marry such a useless woman?”

“If I were the king, I would have rejected her long ago.”

Their words haunted me.

But I always told myself that as long as Lucien remained my husband, there was hope.

The clock struck nine.

Then ten.

The food had gone cold.

My candles were almost burned out.

I was about to call Lucien when the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the hallway.

My heart leaped.

He was home!

I quickly stood, straightened my dress, and hurried toward the entrance.

“Lucien!”

My smile widened when I saw his familiar tall figure.

He looked breathtaking in his black tailored suit. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his sharp golden eyes carried the cold authority that made every wolf in the kingdom fear him.

My husband.

My mate.

The man I had loved since the moment our bond awakened.

“Happy anniversary, my…”

The words died in my throat.

Because Lucien wasn’t alone.

A beautiful blonde woman stood beside him, her slender arm wrapped possessively around his.

She wore an expensive emerald dress and a diamond necklace that sparkled beneath the palace lights.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa Ashbourne.

Lucien’s childhood sweetheart.

The woman whose name he sometimes whispered in his sleep.

“Lucien?” I looked between them. “What’s going on?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, his gaze moved over my red dress, the flowers, and the beautifully decorated dining room.

His expression remained empty.

“What’s all this?”

I swallowed.

“It’s our anniversary. I prepared dinner for us.”

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“Oh, how sweet.”

She pressed herself closer to Lucien.

“Darling, you didn’t tell me she was still trying so hard.”

My stomach twisted.

Darling?

I looked at Lucien, waiting for him to correct her.

He didn’t.

Instead, he walked toward the dining table.

“Amara, sit down. We need to talk.”

Something about his voice frightened me.

“Can we have dinner first? I made your favorite…”

“I said sit down.”

I flinched.

Vanessa smiled.

Slowly, I pulled out a chair and sat.

Lucien reached into his jacket and removed a brown envelope.

He dropped it onto the table.

The sound made me jump.

“Sign these.”

I stared at the envelope.

“What is it?”

“Divorce papers.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I looked up at him.

“What?”

“Our marriage is over, Amara.”

The room began spinning.

I shook my head.

“Lucien, please. If this is about the baby, I promise I’ll keep trying. The healers said…”

“Enough!”

His voice thundered through the room.

I fell silent.

“I’m tired of your excuses. Three years, Amara. Three years, and you haven’t given me a single heir.”

Tears burned behind my eyes.

“I’ve tried everything.”

“And failed.”

Those two words cut deeper than any blade.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t be too hard on her, darling. Some women simply aren’t blessed enough to become mothers.”

She turned toward me with a cruel smile.

“Besides, I think it’s time she stopped pretending to be queen.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Oh, Amara. Surely you’re not that foolish.”

She lifted her chin.

“Lucien and I have always belonged together. You were merely keeping my position warm until I returned.”

I looked at my husband.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Lucien remained silent.

“Lucien!”

His golden eyes met mine.

“Vanessa is right. I’m going to marry her.”

Something inside me shattered.

“But… we’re mates.”

“That doesn’t change anything.”

“You promised to love and protect me!”

“I made those vows because the royal council required them.”

My lips trembled.

“Did you ever love me?”

Lucien looked directly into my eyes.

“No.”

One word.

Three years of marriage destroyed by one word.

“I never loved you, Amara. I married you because it was my duty. Nothing more.”

I remembered every lonely night.

Every rejected embrace.

Every time I waited outside his study, hoping he would spend a few minutes with me.

All those years, I had believed that one day he would love me.

How foolish.

Vanessa picked up the divorce papers and pushed them toward me.

“Come on, Amara. Don’t embarrass yourself. His Majesty has made his decision.”

I looked down at the documents.

My hands were shaking.

“If I sign these, you’ll let me leave peacefully?”

Lucien frowned.

“Yes.”

“And I won’t have to see either of you again?”

Something flickered across his face.

But it disappeared immediately.

“That’s correct.”

I picked up the pen.

My heart screamed at me to beg him.

To remind him of our mate bond.

To ask for one more chance.

But what was the point?

I had spent three years begging for love.

And tonight, I finally understood.

You cannot force someone to love you.

I signed my name.

Amara Moonveil.

Then I removed the silver wedding ring from my finger.

It was the only thing Lucien had ever given me personally.

I placed it beside the divorce papers.

“Happy anniversary, Your Majesty.”

My voice broke.

“I hope she gives you everything I couldn’t.”

For the first time, Lucien looked uncomfortable.

“Amara…”

But I was already walking away.

I didn’t take my clothes.

I didn’t take my jewelry.

I didn’t even take the money sitting in my bedroom drawer.

I left with nothing except my handbag and the broken pieces of my heart.

Outside, heavy rain poured from the dark sky.

The palace guards watched silently as their former queen walked through the gates.

Nobody stopped me.

Nobody offered an umbrella.

I kept walking.

The cold rain soaked my red dress.

My tears mixed with the water running down my cheeks.

“Why wasn’t I enough?” I whispered.

Suddenly, a terrible pain twisted through my lower abdomen.

“Ah!”

I stumbled.

Another sharp pain followed.

I pressed a trembling hand against my stomach.

Something warm trickled down my thighs.

When I looked at my fingers, they were covered in blood.

My heart stopped.

“No…”

My knees buckled.

I collapsed onto the wet pavement.

The world blurred around me.

As darkness swallowed my vision, I placed both hands over my stomach.

“Someone… please help me…”

But the rain drowned out my voice.

And the last thing I saw before losing consciousness was the blood spreading across my beautiful red anniversary dress.

Chapter 2

Amara’s POV

“Congratulations, Mrs. Moonveil. You’re pregnant.”

I stared at the woman standing beside my hospital bed.

For a moment, I thought I had heard her incorrectly.

“Pregnant?”

The doctor smiled gently.

“Yes. You’re going to be a mother.”

My heart stopped.

A mother?

After three years of being called barren?

After countless nights of crying myself to sleep because I couldn’t give Lucien an heir?

I was pregnant?

“No…” I whispered, shaking my head. “That can’t be possible.”

The doctor pulled a chair closer to my bed.

“My name is Dr. Evelyn Hart. I understand this must be overwhelming, but I assure you, the results are correct.”

I looked around the unfamiliar room.

White walls.

Expensive medical equipment.

Fresh flowers beside the window.
