Chapter 1. The Luna Who Never Was

POV: Lyra

Five years of waiting ended in a single sentence, and it wasn't my name.

The first thing I noticed was that Rowan wouldn't look at me, and my heart stumbled at the sight of it. A cold knot tightened in my stomach, whispering warnings that I stubbornly tried to ignore.

The sacred courtyard sparkled beneath the full moon, silver lanterns hung from the ancient oak trees, and white flowers covered the stone path that led to the Moon Altar. Music drifted through the night air as wolves from neighboring packs laughed and talked among themselves, filling the courtyard with warmth and excitement.

Tonight was the Annual Moon Ceremony, when every Alpha gathered before the Moon Goddess to honor the old traditions and Alpha Rowan Blackwood would finally name his Luna.

Everyone believed that Luna would be me, including me.

I stood at the edge of the courtyard, smoothing the wrinkles from my white ceremonial dress with hands that shook from excitement.

I had waited five long years for this night, and now it had finally come. Every sacrifice, every late night tending to the wounded pack members, every whispered promise in the dark had led to this exact moment.

"Lyra!" Someone called.

I turned as old Mrs. Elowen hurried toward me with a bright smile on her face. "There you are!" She cupped my face with both hands and looked at me like I was already something precious.

"Look at you, our future Luna." She said.

Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I felt a shy smile pull at my lips. "Please don't say that yet, Mrs. Elowen. I replied, the ceremony hasn't even officially started." I added.

She laughed, waving off my worry with a gentle hand. "Why not? She asked. Half this pack already calls you Luna." She added, and several nearby warriors nodded in agreement, adding their own quiet words of support.

"You've earned it," one said, crossing his arms over his broad chest with a proud grin.

"You've always taken care of us when we've been injured in the border skirmishes," said another, stepping closer.

"You belong beside Alpha Rowan," a third added warmly, his voice ringing with absolute certainty.

Their words made my heart feel lighter, and for a moment I let myself believe that maybe, just maybe, tonight all the waiting would finally end and the future I had dreamed of would become my reality.

I looked across the courtyard and Rowan stood beside the Moon Priest on the raised stone platform, looking every bit the Alpha our pack admired. He was tall and strong, and his black ceremonial coat carried the Blackwood crest proudly across his chest.

The moonlight caught his dark hair as the wind moved gently around him, and for a moment he looked exactly like the man I had fallen in love with all those years ago.

As if he felt my eyes on him, he lifted his head, and for one beautiful second our eyes met across the crowded lawn.

I smiled, a soft, hopeful thing, but he didn't return it. Instead, he looked away, breaking our connection entirely, and the smile slowly faded from my face as a strange, uneasy feeling settled inside my chest.

Why? I asked myself, panic fluttering in my throat, because Rowan always smiled at me when our eyes met in a crowd.

I tried to push the feeling away, telling myself he was probably just nervous and choosing a Luna in front of every Alpha in the kingdom wasn't a small thing, and even the strongest Alpha would feel the crushing weight of that pressure under a thousand watchful eyes.

"Lyra," Beta Gavin appeared beside me, his usual cheerful smile looking strangely forced. "You look beautiful," he said, though his eyes wouldn't quite meet mine.

"Thank you, Gavin." I answered while I studied his face carefully, noting the stiffness in his jaw.

"You don't look happy," I said slowly, narrowing my eyes.

"I'm fine," he answered shortly, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

"You never lie well, Gavin. What is going on?" I asked, a sudden coldness creeping over my skin.

And for a second, he opened his mouth like he wanted to say something important, something heavy that was trapped behind his teeth but then he closed it again without a word, his jaw clenching hard.

"The ceremony is about to begin," he said instead, his voice strained, and he walked away quickly before I could ask him anything else.

I frowned, watching him retreating back because that was entirely strange, completely unlike him, but before I could think about it any further, the sound of royal trumpets echoed across the valley, sharp and piercing, and every conversation in the courtyard stopped at once.

Everyone turned toward the grand entrance as a long line of white carriages rolled through the main gate, golden banners fluttering proudly above them, each one marked with the unmistakable Ashcroft royal crest.

Whispers spread quickly through the crowd, buzzing like angry hornets.

"The royal family?" someone whispered in disbelief.

"What are they doing here? They never attend local pack ceremonies," another replied, craning their neck.

"I heard they were invited," a third suggested uncertainly.

"No, only the princess came," a tiny voice whispered again from the front.

The largest carriage came to a smooth stop, and a royal servant stepped forward quickly to open its door then, a young woman stepped out gracefully, wearing a silver gown covered in tiny crystals that caught and scattered the moonlight like stardust. Her long blonde hair rested perfectly over her shoulders, and a diamond crown sat impeccably upon her head. She carried herself with an effortless arrogance, like someone who had been born to rule over everyone else.

Princess Selene Ashcroft.

I had never met her before, yet the moment she stepped onto the stone path, her gaze swept across the crowd and locked onto me and she smiled.

It wasn't a warm smile or a friendly greeting; it felt sharp, knowing, like she already knew a devastating secret I didn't, and a cold chill ran down my spine because of it.

Why was she here? I asked myself, my chest tightening painfully.

I looked back toward Rowan, he was watching her approach, not me, and something inside me twisted violently at the sight.

The Moon Priest raised his silver staff high into the air, the metal gleaming in the dark, and announced in a booming voice, "The ceremony will now begin!"

Silence swept across the courtyard instantly as hundreds of wolves gathered tighter around the sacred altar, the full moon shining directly above them, its brilliant light pouring over the clearing like silver rain.

The Moon Priest lifted both hands toward the sky, his eyes closed in reverence. "Tonight, before the Moon Goddess and every Alpha gathered here, Alpha Rowan Blackwood will announce the woman chosen to stand beside him as Luna."

My heartbeat echoed loudly inside my ears, drowning out the crickets and the night wind. This was it, I whispered to myself then i took one slow, trembling step forward. Mrs. Elowen squeezed my hand gently and whispered with an affectionate beam, "I told you, you've waited long enough, my dear."

I smiled nervously, trying to swallow the lump in my throat as Rowan climbed onto the altar across the courtyard. His face remained completely unreadable, he didn't search for me in the crowd the way he always used to; he didn't smile or offer a reassuring nod, he simply stood before everyone, waiting in absolute stillness.

The Moon Priest nodded toward him respectfully. "Alpha Rowan, the Moon Goddess is watching, speak your choice." He said.

The entire world seemed to stop breathing, even the wind went completely still, leaving the clearing in dead silence.

I waited, holding my breath, and every dream I had ever carried, every future I had ever built in my mind, rested inside that single, fragile moment.

Rowan finally opened his mouth, and his deep voice echoed clearly across the sacred courtyard, carrying over every silent face.

"I have made my decision." He said.

The crowd leaned forward as one, desperate to hear the name, Mrs. Elowen whispered beside me with a proud smile, "So have I," while I held my breath so tightly my lungs burned.

Rowan slowly lifted his hand, and my heart soared with hope, believing the moment had finally arrived, but then his hand didn't point toward me, instead, it pointed past me, past the crowd of pack members, toward the royal guests standing near the carriages.

"My chosen Luna," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm and steady, "is Princess Selene Ashcroft."

The world shattered around me in an instant, and I forgot how to breathe while someone gasped loudly nearby, a sharp, ragged sound, and the background music stopped completely, an elderly elder dropped his walking stick so it clattered harshly against the stone path, and Mrs. Elowen's hand slipped slowly from mine as if she, too, could no longer hold on to reality. No one moved, and no one spoke and a heavy, suffocating shock blanketed the entire clearing.

Princess Selene smiled gracefully, a triumphant look in her eyes, and stepped smoothly onto the altar, standing right beside Rowan as though she had always belonged there by his side.

I stood frozen, staring at them both, my legs refusing to move beneath me as if my feet had rooted into the stone. This wasn't real, it couldn't be real, it was a nightmare, a cruel joke that would end in a second.

Five years of promises whispered under the stars, five years of unwavering love, five years of believing with every fiber of my being that I would become his Luna, had all of it meant absolutely nothing to him?

Slowly, very slowly, I lifted my burning eyes to Rowan's face, silently begging him to look down at me, to tell me this was a terrible mistake, to tell me there was a hidden reason, to tell me anything that would fix the bleeding hole in my chest.

At last, he met my eyes across the space between us, but the warmth I had always found there was completely gone, replaced by a wall of absolute ice.

His face was calm, his voice had been steady throughout his declaration, and his expression felt colder than the dead of winter. And right then, looking into his distant eyes, I realized with a sudden, growing horror that he wasn't joking and he hadn't been forced, rather, he had truly chosen another woman, casting me aside without a single backward glance.

Then, as if to twist the knife deeper, Princess Selene turned her head, found my eyes across the courtyard, and smiled at me one more time.

That was when the final piece of the puzzle fell into place, cold and sharp, and I understood with absolute clarity that this had never been about love at all.

Chapter 2. Rejected Before the Moon

POV: Lyra

Whatever Princess Selene knew, she was about to make sure the entire pack watched me break before she said it.

The silence in the courtyard was louder than any scream, a heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on every soul present. No one moved, no one breathed, as I stood frozen beneath the brilliant gaze of the full moon, staring up at Rowan while Princess Selene slipped gracefully onto the sacred altar beside him like she belonged there all along.

My ears rang violently, and I could still hear his devastating words echoing over and over inside my head, bouncing against my skull like a cruel chant: My chosen Luna is Princess Selene Ashcroft.

This wasn't happening, it couldn't be real because it felt like a nightmare I was desperately trying to claw my way out of.

"This isn't happening," I spoke with a low, trembling tune, shaking my head back and forth in sheer disbelief as my vision blurred with unshed tears. "It's some kind of sick joke,
