Desperation is a quiet, creeping sickness, one that makes a person blind to the edge of a cliff until they are already falling. Alice was no exception. She had a devoted husband and a peaceful life, yet she remained hollow, obsessed with finding a way to bear a child. Her husband pleaded with her to stop, but she stubbornly chased every dead end until she finally had no choice but to give up. Then, a mysterious woman arrived, breathing life back into her fading hopes. Alice followed her deep into the Forbidden Forest. Almost instantly, the bright sky withered into a suffocating darkness. Every instinct warned her of danger, but she was already too far deep to turn back. "Say something, Alice!" Thomas roared, his voice cracking with a manic mixture of rage and pure panic as he slammed his fists onto the wooden dining table. The porcelain teacups rattled against their saucers. "Say something! You saw what happened out there! You saw what that... that thing did to the dog! It didn't even touch the beast, and it dropped dead, frozen from the inside out!" "Shut up, Thomas! Just shut your mouth!" Alice screamed, spinning around to face him. Her face was flushed, tears spilling over her eyelids, but her expression was fierce, contorted by a desperate, defensive fury. "He defended us! The dog was rabid! It was going to attack your son, and Edwin protected himself! Why are you attacking him for trying to survive?!" "That is not our son!" Thomas yelled back, his chest heaving as he stepped around the table, closing the distance between them. He pointed a trembling, white-knuckled finger toward the boy in the corner. "Look at him, Alice! For the love of God, look at his face! Look at his eyes! When have you ever seen a living child look at the world like that? He doesn't breathe! He doesn't blink! The very grass beneath his feet turns to ash, and you are still standing there making excuses!" "Because he is my son!" Alice shrieked, her voice reaching a pitch of sheer hysteria that echoed off the low ceiling. She stepped in front of Edwin, throwing her arms out to shield the boy’s unmoving figure with her own body. "He is my boy, Thomas! He is the child I carried for nine months, the child I watched die in that bed while you did absolutely nothing to save him!" The words struck Thomas like a physical blow. He staggered back a half-step, the color instantly draining from his face. "Alice..." he whispered, his voice cracking with profound betrayal. "You think I wanted him to die? I loved him just as much as you did. I am mourning him right now!"
