Long before the first drop of blood curdled within the ancestral vaults of the Blackrock Pack, there was a law written in the marrow of the moon: Pure black is the coat of kings. To the wolves of the Northern Wilds, color was destiny. A pelt as dark as a midnight ravine signified the unyielding strength of the apex predator unblemished, untainted, and ordained by the heavens to rule. A grey pelt was tolerated, though pitied; a brown pelt was viewed as a dull tool. But red? Red was an abomination. Red was the color of wildfire, of unstable magic, of old, forgotten gods who had burned the world down out of spite. It was a curse whispered of in dark dens, a genetic tremor that the elders swore had been purged from the bloodlines centuries ago. Until Xyrelle was born. The night she entered the world, the pack’s sacred obsidian hearth crackled with a strange, violent blue flame that refused to settle for three days and three nights. The midwives had gasped, stepping back from the whelping bed as if the newborn pup were a live coal. When Alpha Viktor Moore first laid eyes upon his middle daughter, he did not smile. He did not lift her to the sky in triumph as he had done for his firstborn son, Roman, or his radiant, silver-tinged daughter, Katania. Instead, Viktor’s jaw had tightened into a hard, unforgiving line. He had looked at the shock of vivid, copper-red hair clinging to the infant’s scalp like spilled blood on snow, and he had whispered a single, damning decree to his mate: "Hide her. Let no neighboring pack lay eyes on this stain, or our name is dust." Thus began a childhood lived in the suffocating shadows of a golden estate. While Roman was taught the art of war on polished marble floors and Katania was draped in imported silks from the eastern trading posts, Xyrelle grew up in the damp, drafty recesses of the pack house scullery. She was the ghost child of the Alpha lineage, the secret kept behind heavy oak doors and iron latches. Her mother, Luna Alana, looked upon her only with a chilling, vacant indifference, as though staring at a broken piece of furniture that could neither be returned nor repaired. Yet, blood cannot be easily muzzled. Beneath the coarse wool of the headscarf she was forced to wear whenever visitors arrived, and beneath the layers of dirt she smeared across her skin to dull her appearance, a strange vitality pulsed through Xyrelle’s veins. It was not just the strength of a wolf. It was something heavier, hotter, and infinitely more dangerous, a dormant spark waiting for enough oxygen to catch fire. Viktor Moore did not believe in fairy tales. He believed in teeth, claws, and pedigree. And that was his fatal mistake.
