Deskripsyon

On the morning of her eighteenth birthday, Elena Vale is summoned to sign the paperwork for a rejection that has not happened yet. Born as a late-shifting Omega in Moonridge Pack, Elena has spent her life being treated like a mistake. Her only hope is Adrian Black, the Alpha heir who once touched her hand and awakened the mate bond between them. But during the Moon Choosing Ceremony, Adrian publicly rejects her and names her perfect stepsister as his future Luna. Humiliated, stamped as rejected, and stripped of her place in the pack, Elena thinks her fate has been sealed. Then Lucien Varric, the feared Lycan King of the North, enters the hall and declares the rejection invalid. Elena was never a weak Omega. She was never Adrian’s to discard. And the bond Moonridge tried to erase may belong to a bloodline powerful enough to bring the entire pack to its knees.

Chapter 1

I knew Adrian was going to reject me when his mother ordered the musicians to stop.

The final note died beneath the vaulted ceiling of Moonridge Hall.

Three hundred wolves turned toward the raised platform.

Toward Adrian Black.

Toward me.

I stood alone at the foot of the silver steps, wearing the white dress Maren had chosen because, according to her, even an Omega should look presentable when the future Alpha announced his mate.

She had been smiling when she said it.

Now I understood why.

Adrian stood beneath the carved crest of Moonridge Pack, dressed in ceremonial black. Silver thread marked his shoulders. The Alpha heir’s ring gleamed on his right hand.

The same hand that had held mine beneath the old ash trees.

The same hand that had traced circles over my wrist while he whispered that I only needed to wait.

Wait until he inherited.

Wait until his father stopped watching.

Wait until the Moon Choosing ceremony.

I had waited for six years.

Beside him stood my stepsister.

Cassia wore red.

Not the pale blue expected of an unmarried pack daughter. Not the white worn by a chosen mate.

Red.

The color reserved for a future Luna before her formal presentation.

Her fingers rested lightly on Adrian’s arm.

Around her throat hung a black pearl I had never seen before.

It seemed to move when she breathed.

Adrian looked at me.

For one desperate moment, I searched his face for the boy who had once kissed me behind the training field and told me the mate bond mattered more than rank.

He was there.

Buried beneath the Alpha heir.

Buried beneath his father’s expectations.

Buried beneath his mother’s hand resting gently between his shoulder blades.

Luna Seraphine leaned close enough to whisper something into his ear.

I could not hear the words.

But Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Then he faced the pack.

“Elena Vale.”

The sound of my name in his voice hurt more than it should have.

My wolf did not answer.

She never did.

For eighteen years I had waited for her.

Every full moon, I had stood beneath the sky until my bones ached, begging for claws, fur, anything that would prove I was not what Moonridge called me.

Weak.

Late.

Wrong.

The pack healer had classified me as an Omega at thirteen.

By fifteen, everyone had stopped expecting me to shift.

Everyone except Adrian.

Or so I had believed.

He drew a slow breath.

“Before the Moonridge Pack and under the authority of Alpha Darius Black, I reject Elena Vale as my mate.”

The bond broke through me.

Not like a thread snapping.

Like something alive being dragged out through my ribs.

My knees struck the stone.

A few wolves gasped.

More laughed.

I pressed one hand against my chest, but there was nothing to hold closed. Pain spread beneath my skin, bright and vicious, turning the hall into fragments of silver light.

Adrian blurred above me.

I remembered his mouth against mine.

His voice in the dark.

I will choose you when it matters.

Apparently, this was when it mattered.

“Elena,” he said.

Softer now.

As though tenderness after public execution counted as mercy.

I looked up.

He had stepped down one stair.

Cassia’s hand tightened around his arm.

Seraphine did not touch him again.

She did not need to.

Adrian stopped.

His expression closed.

“My future Luna must be able to protect this pack,” he continued. “She must be strong, stable, and capable of producing a strong Alpha line.”

Every word sounded prepared.

Not false.

That would have been easier.

He believed enough of them to speak clearly.

A murmur moved through the hall.

Stable.

That word had followed me since childhood.

Elena is unstable.

Elena is oversensitive.

Elena imagines things.

Elena cannot control herself during the full moon.

No one ever asked why the lavender medicine Maren gave me made my hands shake.

No one asked why entire nights disappeared from my memory.

No one asked why an Omega needed medicine at all.

Adrian looked past me rather than at me.

“Our bond was an error of instinct. It cannot outweigh my duty.”

Cassia lowered her eyes with perfect modesty.

The future Luna already accepting her victory.

My stomach twisted.

“You knew,” I said.

My voice barely crossed the hall.

Adrian heard it.

His eyes returned to mine.

“You knew we were mates.”

A pulse moved in his throat.

“Elena—”

“You knew before tonight.”

The pack quieted.

Cassia’s smile vanished.

Alpha Darius shifted on his throne.

Gareth stood near the rear columns beside Maren, his face gray. He did not come forward.

He had raised me.

He had taught me to read tracks and sharpen kitchen knives and never complain when Maren locked the pantry.

He had also brought me here tonight.

He had known what dress she chose.

He looked at the floor.

That hurt almost as much as Adrian.

Adrian descended another step.

“I tried to handle this privately.”

“No,” I said.

The word came more strongly this time.

A few heads turned.

Omegas did not interrupt Alpha heirs.

Weak girls did not say no while kneeling.

Adrian’s brows drew together.

“I tried to protect you from greater humiliation.”

Laughter rose from somewhere near the eastern tables.

Cassia did not laugh.

She watched me carefully now.

As if waiting for something.

“What would greater humiliation look like?” I asked. “Would there be more witnesses?”

Adrian flinched.

Good.

The pain in my chest sharpened again, but anger gave it edges I could hold.

Luna Seraphine stepped forward.

Her gown was the same pale silver as the ceremonial curtains. She looked gentle, almost sorrowful.

“Elena, the rejection has caused distress. That is understandable.”

Her tone turned me into a difficult child.

“The healer warned us that your condition might make the bond feel stronger than it truly was.”

My condition.

I stared at her.

“What condition?”

A pause.

Small.

Most people would not have noticed it.

Seraphine’s eyes moved briefly toward Gareth.

Then back to me.

“Your Omega instability.”

The black pearl at Cassia’s throat pulsed.

Once.

A cold sensation moved across my spine.

Not pain.

Recognition.

Something inside me lifted its head.

Adrian spoke before I could.

“You need to accept the rejection.”

Of course.

He wanted the ritual completed.

He wanted the bond gone cleanly enough to place Cassia at his side before the moon reached the center window.

He wanted me to help finish what he had started.

“What happens if I do not?”

Darius rose from his throne.

The room bowed around him.

Alpha power rolled down the steps, heavy enough to press my palms against the floor.

“You will accept your future Alpha’s rejection,” he said.

Command entered his voice.

The old instinct in every pack wolf answered.

Heads lowered.

Knees weakened.

My body shook beneath the weight of it.

But still my wolf did not come.

There was only that strange cold line along my spine.

Waiting.

Darius descended one step.

“Accept.”

The word drove into my skull.

My mouth opened.

I could feel the answer being forced toward my tongue.

I accept.

Two words that would make everything easier.

For Adrian.

For Cassia.

For the pack that had classified me, medicated me, laughed at me, and now wanted me to leave politely.

I bit my tongue.

Blood filled my mouth.

The forced words broke apart.

Darius’s eyes widened.

The pack fell silent.

I raised my head.

“I heard him.”

My voice trembled.

It was still mine.

“But I will not help him make this clean.”

Adrian’s face changed.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

Not of me.

Of what his father might do.

Darius’s power struck again.

“Accept the rejection.”

Pain exploded behind my eyes.

I fell forward.

My bloody palm hit the stone.

Something silver flashed beneath it.

At first, I thought the moonlight had shifted.

Then thin lines spread outward from my hand.

Not cracks.

Writing.

Silver marks moved beneath my skin, crossing my palm and winding around my wrist like branches searching for light.

The nearest wolves stumbled back.

Someone screamed.

Cassia clutched the black pearl at her throat.

Seraphine’s face went blank.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then it was gone.

“Elena,” Gareth whispered from the back of the hall.

He knew something.

The certainty struck me harder than Darius’s command.

Maren seized his arm.

“Do not.”

He obeyed her.

Again.

The silver lines climbed higher.

My dress sleeve began to smoke.

Adrian came down the final steps.

“Elena, stop.”

I laughed.

The sound was raw.

“How?”

He hesitated.

He had no answer.

Because no one had ever taught me to control this.

Because everyone had spent years insisting there was nothing inside me to control.

He reached for me.

The moment his fingers crossed the silver light, it struck him.

Adrian flew backward.

He hit the ceremonial steps hard enough to crack one.

Cassia screamed his name and ran to him.

The hall erupted.

Guards drew blades.

Darius roared an order.

Seraphine did not look at her son.

She looked at my hand.

At the silver writing.

At the blood on the floor.

And then toward the far end of the hall.

I followed her gaze.

A man sat alone beneath the shadow of the western arch.

He had arrived that afternoon with the Northern Court, though no one had dared announce him as merely a guest.

Lucien Varric.

The Lycan King.

He wore black without ceremonial silver, as if no ornament was required to tell the room who held the greater crown. His coat lay open at the throat, revealing the hard line of his chest beneath dark fabric. One hand rested against the arm of his chair.

He had watched the entire rejection without speaking.

Now his eyes were fixed on me.

Gold.

Not the warm gold of moonlit fur.

The color of a blade held inside fire.

Darius pointed at me.

“Remove her.”

Two guards approached.

The silver marks tightened around my wrist.

My vision blurred.

I could not stand.

I could not shift.

I could barely breathe.

The first guard caught my arm.

A growl rolled through the hall.

Low.

Quiet.

Every wolf froze.

The guard released me before the sound had fully ended.

Lucien rose.

He was taller than I remembered from his arrival, broad enough that the darkness seemed to move with him. Power followed without the crushing force of Darius’s command.

Lucien did not need to order the room to fear him.

It already did.

He descended from the western platform.

Slowly.

His gaze moved from my face to my bloody hand, then to the silver marks burning beneath my skin.

He stopped several feet away.

Close enough to intervene.

Far enough not to touch me.

“Do not put your hands on her again,” he said.

Darius’s face darkened.

“This is an internal matter of Moonridge Pack.”

Lucien looked at the cracked ceremonial step where Adrian had fallen.

Then at Cassia’s black pearl.

Finally, at Seraphine.

“No,” he said.

His gaze returned to the marks around my wrist.

“This is evidence.”

The word cut through the hall.

Seraphine went completely still.

Lucien crouched in front of me, but he did not reach out.

Not yet.

His eyes followed the silver writing as it moved through my blood.

Something like recognition entered his expression.

Then fury.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

He raised his head and looked directly at Adrian.

“Who classified her as an Omega?”

No one answered.

Lucien’s voice became softer.

That made it worse.

“Bring me the original order.”

Adrian’s face lost all color.

And I understood.

Before the document was brought.

Before anyone spoke his name.

Adrian already knew what Lucien was going to find.

Chapter 2

Adrian already knew what Lucien was going to find.

I saw it in the way his hand tightened against the cracked step.

In the way he did not ask what order Lucien meant.

In the way Luna Seraphine stopped looking at me and began watching her son.

The silver marks beneath my skin pulsed once.

Waiting.

Lucien remained crouched several feet away, close enough to stop the guards, far enough that I did not feel cornered.

“Bring me the original classification order,” he repeated.

Alpha Darius descended from the platform.

“This is Moonridge territory.”

Lucien looked up at him.

“And?”

The single word silenced the murmurs beginning around the hall.

Darius’s face darkened. “You do not command my records.”

“No,” Lucien said. “Elena does.”

Every face turned toward me.

I was still kneeling on the stone floor.

Blood marked my palm.

My chest felt as if Adrian’s rejection had left something sharp
